Archival Rugby Archival Rugby Rugby was first played in England two hundred years before three boys set down the first set of rugby rules in 1845 in Rugby School in England. The Nelson Football Club introduced rugby union to New Zealand by adopting ARCHIVAL the code in 1870. On Saturday, 14 May 1870, Nelson College played Nelson Club (“The Town” it was called) at the Botanical Reserve, Nelson.
