  • Socal Interscholastic Rugby Federation (Scirf) 2019-20 High School Club X’S
SOCAL INTERSCHOLASTIC RUGBY FEDERATION (SCIRF) 2019-20 HIGH SCHOOL CLUB X’S High School Club 10s is intended to support small schools, emerging and recovery rugby programs. The game of Rugby tens, also known as ten-a-side and Xs, is a variant of rugby union in which teams are made up of ten players, typically five forwards and five backs. Matches are much shorter, usually played as two ten-minute halves. Unlike sevens rugby, tens offer players of diverse skills, capabilities and different fitness levels the opportunity to play the game. The more traditional scrums and lineouts are part of the game whilst the fact that there is a bit more space on the field, however not too much as to expose the slower forwards on the defensive lines, makes this a very popular game for all levels of players. How to play Club Rugby 10s Be part of an approved ASB High School Club Sport (AD or Program Director Letter) Have a JV or Varsity Roster of 12-15 players not to exceed 20 players. JV and Varsity Teams must be able to stand on their own if both teams are required to play simultaneously or at different locations. Teams are allowed to play JV or Varsity 10s teams with a JV or Varsity 15s team but if you have more than 20 players available for either team it is strongly recommended that you form a 15s team which offers the greatest opportunity for your players. Match Setup Teams can play each other 2-3 times in one contest or play a round robin tournament style setup not to exceed four matches per day.

  • Sports Reporting
Conference 2005: Sports Reporting The changing world of the sports reporter By Ed Mason, School of Communication, Unitec. Abstract The JTO’s Jim Tucker identified ‘lack of knowledge’ as a journalism training issue for serious research. This is now more true for sports reporters. Rapid and bewildering change in the sports field means professional reporters, trained in a simpler age, struggle to develop a knowledge base to meet the expectations of a new and more sophisticated sports reader/viewer. New areas worthy of study include: 1. management of collective agreements including salary caps. The National Basketball League in New Zealand (NBL), Australian National Basketball League (ANBL), National Rugby League (NRL) and Australian Football League (AFL) all operate salary caps in Australasia . The New Zealand Rugby Union operates a graduated salary structure as does New Zealand Cricket. North American sports (National Football League (NFL), National Hockey League (NHL), National Basketball Association (NBA) operate extremely complex agreements with players unions including salary caps and a range of free agency arrangements for players. Major League Baseball (MLB) operates a ‘luxury tax’ to redress imbalances between the richest and poorest clubs. European sports, particularly soccer, face European Union employment legislation in cross border transfers. 2. Medical change including the powers of the World Doping Agency and recent Congressional investigations into steroid abuse in baseball. Baseball has been dumped as an Olympic sport in part because MLB and the Players’ Union will not meet Olympic standards for performance enhancing drugs. 3. Market forces and financing of sports teams and the negotiation of television rights have become more complex with the recent European Union signal that television rights for English Premier League soccer must be shared out.

  • From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition
From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition GEOFF WATSON Abstract Formerly rather uniform in pattern, sporting biographies have evolved significantly since the 1970s, becoming much more open in their criticism of teammates and administrators as well as being more revealing of their subject’s private lives. This article identifies three transitional phases in the genre; a chronological era, extending from the early twentieth century until the 1960s; an indirectly confessional phase between the 1970s and mid 1980s and an openly confessional phase from the mid-1980s. Despite these changes, sporting biographies continue to reinforce the dominant narratives around sport in New Zealand. New Zealand sporting biographies have a mixed reputation in literary and scholarly circles. Often denigrated for their allegedly formulaic style, they have also been criticised for their lack of insight into New Zealand society.1 Representative of this critique is Lloyd Jones, who wrote in 1999, “sport hardly earns a mention in our wider literature, and … the rest of society is rarely, if ever, admitted to our sports literature.”2 This article examines this perspective, arguing that sporting biographies afford a valuable insight into New Zealand’s changing self- image and values. Moreover, it will be argued that the nature of sporting biographies themselves has changed significantly since the 1980s and that they have become much more open in their discussion of teammates and the personal lives of their subjects. Whatever one’s perspective on the literary merits of sporting biographies, their popular appeal is undeniable. Whereas the print run of most scholarly texts in New Zealand is at best a few thousand, sporting biographies consistently sell in the tens of thousands.
