For years, Galicia had been a part of Poland. Its scenery, woods and rivers had been our parents’ memories. A Jewish culture had developed in Galicia, the Yiddish language was created there, customs established, unique Jewish foods cooked, the figure of the “Yiddishe Mame” developed, inspiring a good deal of genealogical research; “Halakhot” and Rabbinic Laws made; an authoritative leadership established in the towns, organizing communities on their social institutions – Galicia gave birth to the “Shttetl” – the Jewish town, on all its social-historical and emotional implications.

HE OMMENTATOR T The Independent C Student Newspaper of Yeshiva University VOL. LXXXVII TUESDAY, AUGUST 31, 2021 ISSUE NO. 1 Students Return to Campus With Nearly No COVID-Restrictions By SEFFI JONAS This article was published online on August 29. Yeshiva University undergraduates re- turned to campus with nearly no COVID- restrictions on Wednesday, Aug. 25, when the fall semester began. Student council leaders and the Office of Student Life (OSL) organized the back-to-school programming. Last semester, about 550 students lived on campus. Those students were required to wear masks and receive a negative PCR test twice weekly. For the 2021-22 academic year, students only needed proof of vac- cination and a negative PCR test to return to campus, without further COVID testing. Unvaccinated students who were granted exception from the vaccine requirement have stricter guidelines. Superstorm Henri, which made landfall on Sunday, Aug. 22, delayed moving into the dorms for some of the student body. Despite the storm, orientation commenced that same Sunday evening. OSL provided students with several op- portunities to do chessed during the first week back on campus. Students pack- aged kosher Rosh Hashanah packages for American military service members. “The LORD bless thee and keep thee. The LORD make his face shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee. The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee and give thee peace. And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel and I will bless them. “ Numbers 6:24-27 SHOFAR MINISTRY TRIP May 9-23, 2011 Monday, May 9: Travel to Philadelphia for 6:15pm flight via London to Israel. Leave Lancaster by 1:30pm. Tuesday, May 10: Ariel, TelAviv & Ramat Gan Arrive in Tel Aviv at 8:00am. After coming through customs we will travel to our lodging place Beit Immanuel in Joppa and get settled in. Beit Immanuel is the site of the first out reach of the Mennonites in Israel with Roy Kreiders and Paul Swarrs. It is where Israel College of the Bible began and where a thriving messianic congregation meets. David and Michaela Lazarus will be our hosts. We will take a walking tour around Tel Aviv and Jaffa including the Dugit outreach center and MAOZ ministry. Hopefully we will have time for a dip in the Mediterranean in the afternoon. Tonight we rest up from the flight, anticipating an early start in the morning and dreaming of the Promised Land. Wednesday, May 11: Joppa & TelAviv After a delightful breakfast, a time of worship and prayer on a rooftop overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and Tel Aviv, we will travel to Ariel where Brent & Abby Boll live. We will see their home and also visit with the Ami Ortiz family. On the way back we may visit congregation Adonai Roi and the Baptist Village in Petah Tikva where Brent used to work and perhaps the school where Abby teaches.
