During several expeditions to this basin, we collected 69 fish species belonging to 65 genera, 29 families and 10 orders. Characiformes and Siluriformes were the orders with the largest number of species and Characidae, Loricariidae, Cichlidae, Auchenipteridae and Pimelodidae were the richest families. About 30% of the fish fauna of the Itapecuru basin is endemic or restricted to northeastern Brazil. Just over a fifth (22%) of the species is also known to occur in the Amazon basin and only a few are more widely distributed in South American. Keywords: taxonomy, biodiversity, freshwater fishes. December 2020 / Printed: June 2021 Abstract.The Maguari Stork (Ciconia maguari) occurs extensively in South America where it inhabits mainly wetlands. Despite being common in some regions, information on several aspects of its ecology is lacking. The objective of this study was to investigate the diet of Maguari Storks in the Pampa ecoregion of southern Brazil using citizen science. A compilation of records of foraging birds was done in two on-line databases - WikiAves and e-Bird Brasil. A total of 36 records, obtained by citizens between 2008 and 2020, reported storks holding preys with their bills. The most frequent food item was the muçum fish (Synbranchus marmoratus), representing 39% of the preys. Squamate reptiles and anuran amphibians comprised 33% and 19% of the food items, respectively. Most preys had a serpentiform body shape, being represented mainly by muçum and snakes. This study suggests that our knowledge regarding the natural history of Brazilian birds can increase through citizen science. -

Ethnozoological study on eel fishes of Assam revealed the special significance of two eel species Anguiila bengalensis (Indian mottled eel) and Monopterus cuchia (Swamp eel) among indigenous people and the use of the fishes in various traditional medical practices. Besides oral consumption of fish, various body parts, either in mixture with other plant or animal material or alone are used traditionally in treatments of anaemia, burn injury, piles, weakness etc. In this current study, conventional taxonomy of these two species is reviewed with documentation of their therapeutic utilization. Key words: Eel, therapeutic practice, Assam. Introduction Use of fish in therapeutic purposes is an age old practice in the world. Fish is good source of animal proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins. It is an establish fact that regular intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids through fish consumption reduces heart diseases1. Many compounds used in regular medicine have been extracted from fish. Being a good source of vitamins D, consumption of fish can improve bone related disorders. Similarly in regard of cardiac disorder treatment, fish oil has been proved to be very effective as this is rich source of poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). -

However, species richness and the molecular diversity and phylogeny of larval stages of strigeid trematodes (tetracotyle) occurring in this group of aquatic invertebrates remain poorly understood. Here, we report our use of recently obtained sequences of several molecular markers to analyse some aspects of the ecology, taxon- omy and phylogeny of the genera Australapatemon and Cotylurus, which utilise leeches as intermediate hosts. Methods: From April 2017 to September 2018, 153 leeches were collected from several sampling stations in small rivers with slow-fowing waters and related drainage canals located in three regions of Poland. The distinctive forms of tetracotyle metacercariae collected from leeches supplemented with adult Strigeidae specimens sampled from a wide range of water birds were analysed using the 28S rDNA partial gene, the second internal transcribed spacer region (ITS2) region and the cytochrome c oxidase (COI) fragment. Results: Among investigated leeches, metacercariae of the tetracotyle type were detected in the parenchyma and musculature of 62 specimens (prevalence 40.5%) with a mean intensity reaching 19.9 individuals. The taxonomic generic afliation of metacercariae derived from the leeches revealed the occurrence of two strigeid genera: Aus- tralapatemon Sudarikov, 1959 and Cotylurus Szidat, 1928. -

Few freshwater species attain a large size (>500 g). The largest species regularly caught today in the lower freshwater sections of many Panamanian rivers are of marine origin. Freshwater fish species diversity and biomass decline rapidly with altitude particularly on the Pacific watershed. Historically, people living inland have compensated for this deficiency by consuming salted and dried marine fish. -
