Its main campus is located in Osaka and is officially called the Higashiosaka Campus. The university has a total of 14 faculties, nine of which are situated at the Higashiosaka campus. Among the 14 faculties, the Faculty of Business Administration, the Faculty of Applied Sociology and the Faculty of Science and Engineering attract many international students. The Higashiosaka campus is convenient- ly located near the business center of Osaka via train in less than fifteen minutes. Moreover, it takes only one hour to Kyoto, Nara or Kobe by train. The Higashiosaka campus is rather large (470,000m2 ) for an urban Japanese university. It is a modern university with up-to-date fa- cilities. The Central Library has more than 1.5 million books, including many rare and valuable manuscripts. A new library with a large proportion of manga opened in 2017, which is home to around 70,000 books including about 22,000 comics, with a 2400-seat self- study space open for 24 hours. One of the great academic achievements of Kindai University is the full-cycle aquaculture method used to farm the endangered Blue- fin tuna.

Journal of Sustainable Energy & Environment Special Issue (2011) 73-76 Research Study on Biofuels at Chiang Mai University T. Kiatsiriroat* and N. Vorayos Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai 50200 Thailand Corresponding author: [email protected], Tel: +66-5-394-4144, Fax: +66-5-394-4145 Abstract: This paper presents the results of research studies on biofuels in the terms of bioethanol and biodiesel at Chiang Mai University, Thailand. For bioethanol, the studies are concerned with the selection of ethanol producing microbes and the methods of the microbe cultivation to produceget high yields of ethanol. For biodiesel, various methods have been carried out to achieve high energy efficiency in biodiesel or emulsified oil products to replace diesel in diesel burners and low speed diesel engines. Fewer emissions were observed when the biodiesel and the emulsified oil were utilized. Moreover, bio-oil and bio-char from freshwater algae have been considered. The production process was carried out under a slow pyrolysis. Finally, life cycle impact assessment of the biofuel production has also been undertaken. Keywords: biofuels, bioethanol, biodiesel, emulsified oil, bio algae-oil. 1. Introduction cerevisiae TISTR 5020 with six months old dried longan as a carbon source at an initial overall sugar concentration of Biomass is the largest source for renewable energy in 74.4±5.2 g/L. The highest ethanol concentration was 45.0±6.1 Thailand which is about 4,000 ktoe at present or over three g/L with an ethanol yield (YP/S) of 0.50 g ethanol/g overall sugar.

The conference is envisaged as an opportunity for participants to question the old paradigms and to search for new ones that can help us to analytically investigate the emerging economic, political and social order, as well as to conceive a realisation of the need for a new methodology to help us in better dealing with the problems of environment degradation, migration, authoritarianism, ethnic conflict, inequality, commoditisation of culture, and so forth.

CASITA II Ref: TH/Asia IT&C II/ 04 (96405) Sustainable Capacity Building on Urban Disaster Mitigation in Asia Using IT&C Learning Tools Needs Assessment Report 30 April 2005 Needs Assessment Report 1. Introduction The 1st phase of the CASITA project funded under the EU Asia IT&C program ended in March 2004. From the initial group of 14 universities, four universities from Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand have requested assistance for the development of undergraduate and postgraduate level courses on natural risk management during the CASITA phase I final workshop and subsequently. They requested the courses to be supported by a research component in order to ensure sustainability and ability to be innovative to address local priorities. These universities, observed to be most promising have taken steps already to institutionalize disaster management subjects in the course curriculum of ongoing courses, are: 1. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, India 2. Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia 3. University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka 4. Chiang Mai University, Thailand Therefore, these universities were approached to obtain more information on the needs and special features to be included in academic programs. The common major hazard type associated with cities in all target countries is hydro-meteorological, but cities in India and Indonesia have considerable threat due to seismic activities also. The urban context, population density, associated social and economic problems differ country to country. A serious difference also can be observed in terms of level of subject knowledge of disaster risk management, land use planning, etc. The level in expertise in application of tools such as GIS/RS is also different from one university to another.
