Price Noel Domboy joined Bugatti in May 1932 and retired in 1965. Some years later the Bugatti family asked him to write down recollections of working for Ettore. He begins by explaining that he joined after the ‘glory years’ of the Bugatti racing successes and thus knew little of the early days. He goes on to say that the personality of Ettore is already well known but recalls incidents which are not without interest. Noel Domboy His narrative is often duplicated but it is as he wrote. • The Lost Bugatti
BUGATTI DIATTO AVIO 8C WORDS CLAUDE TEISEN-SIMONY & DAVID LILLYWHITE ARCHIVE PICTURES BUGATTI TRUST A mysterious chassis fitted with a one-off Bugatti aero engine, discovered in a Turin museum, turns out to have links to a famous pilot and to Maserati’s first car. But could it also have been the first step towards the super-luxury Bugatti Royale saloon? The lost Bugatti 90 / MAGNETO MAGNETO / 91 BUGATTI DIATTO AVIO 8C T This is one hell of a tale. It’s controversial at times, it brings in threads involving World War One fighter pilot Roland Garros, surprising links to Maserati, and the likely origins of not just Bugatti’s Grand Prix engines, but also the legendary Bugatti Royale. Most exciting of all, it introduces a remarkable aero-engined Bugatti that’s never been seen before. To whet your appetite, it’s a 14.5-litre and develops 250bhp at 2160rpm – Bugatti’s equivalent of the ‘Beast of Turin’ Fiat or the Benz-engined Scariscrow. Crucially, a large proportion of it is original, rescued from decades in hiding by a legendary Bugatti expert before moving on to its current owner. It’s been painstakingly researched, restored and part-recreated in secret by craftsmen in Denmark and the Czech Republic. To all but a select few, its existence remained unknown until its big reveal at the Rétromobile show in Paris on February 6. So, how did we get to this point? Let’s start with the engine, because actually it’s more important than the car itself in many ways. The story begins with French pilot Roland Garros, who in 1913 made the first-ever non-stop flight across the Mediterranean, flying a fast Morane-Saulnier monoplane.

  • 90Th Anniversary of the Targa Florio Victory: Bugatti Wins Fifth Consecutive Title
90th anniversary of the Targa Florio victory: Bugatti wins fifth consecutive title MOLSHEIM 02 05 2019 FOR MANY YEARS BUGATTI DOMINATED THE MOST IMPORTANT CAR RACE OF THE 1920S Legends were born on this track. Targa Florio in Sicily was considered the world’s hardest, most prestigious and most dangerous long-distance race for many years. Today, current Bugatti models remind us of the drivers from back in the day. Sicilian entrepreneur Vincenzo Florio established his own race on family-owned roads in the Madonie region. Between 1906 and 1977, sports cars raced for the title at international races, some of which even had sports car world championship status. Winners at this race could proudly advertise their victory. For this reason, all important sports car manufacturers sent their vehicles to Sicily. Between 1925 and 1929 Bugatti dominated the race with the Type 35. In particular, in 1928 and 1929, one man showcased his skills at the wheel of his vehicle: Albert Divo. In these two years he was unbeatable in his Bugatti Type 35 C, winning the race in Sicily on 5 May 1929 after having also claimed the top spot in 1928. He also set a further record when he crossed the finish line: the “Fabrik Bugatti” team won the title five times in a row – this had never been done before in the history of the Targa Florio and remained an unbeaten record until the end of the last official races, to this day. A reason to look back. After all, the race was anything but easy: initially one lap of the “Piccolo circuito delle Madonie” was around 148 kilometres, from 1919 organisers cut the race lap distance to a still considerable 108 kilometres.

Our philosophy is that it is not just the mechanics of the machine, or how fast it can CAR OF THE YEAR go, but about where the car has been and what it has 2014 experienced. Each one has a story worthy of hearing. MUSEUM OF THE YEAR I hope you enjoy this exhibition, find it educational, and 2017 will come back to visit us often. • Bugatti: with Our History at Heart and Our Eyes on the Future
Bugatti: with our history at heart and our eyes on the future Bugatti celebrates its 110th anniversary with two world premieres at Geneva Motor Show Molsheim, 5 March 2019. What a start to an anniversary year. At the first major international motor show in 2019, Bugatti is presenting two world premieres. At the Geneva Motor Show, the French luxury brand is showing the hyper sports car “La Voiture Noire1“ and the Chiron Sport “110 ans Bugatti”. The special edition of the Chiron Sport , which is being produced in a limited series of 20 cars, celebrates the brand’s 110th anniversary as well as its French identity. However, the highlight will be the unveiling of “La Voiture Noire”, which had been kept secret up to the beginning of the show. This is a homage to the legendary Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic. This one-off grand tourisme has already been sold and is the world’s most expensive new car, at €11 million. “In 2019, we are celebrating a special anniversary. Bugatti was established 110 years ago. These two models pay homage to our long tradition and to our French homeland,” says Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann. The third model on the Bugatti stand is also in line with this approach: the Bugatti Divo2, is a hyper sports car which is being produced in a limited edition of 40 vehicles. With its modified aerodynamics, it is designed for even higher lateral acceleration than the Chiron3 and ensures extreme driving pleasure. With “La Voiture Noire“, the French luxury automobile brand has once again shown that it produces the world’s most precious and exclusive hyper sports cars.
