Media Release 25 July 2019 From Claire Francis Phone: 0141 287 5548/ 07393 287295 Email: [email protected] GLASGOW MUSEUMS TACKLES GENDER EQUALITY IN CONTEMPORARY ART COLLECTION WITH NEW ACQUISITIONS BY LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL FEMALE ARTISTS Glasgow Museums is delighted to announce 14 recent acquisitions for the city’s fine art collection which include sculpture, video, painting and works on paper by artists Sara Barker, Kate Charlesworth, Michelle Hannah, Sharon Hayes, Winnie Herbstein, Mandy McIntosh and the Feegie Needlers, Carol Rhodes, Kate V Robertson, Anne Robinson, Siân Robinson Davies and Camara Taylor. Acquired as part of a significant strand of Glasgow Museums collecting approach, developed in 2015 to address gender inequality, these works make an unequivocal statement about the value and quality of work by contemporary women and non-binary artists. The new acquisitions increase the number of works by women in the Glasgow Museums’ fine art collection, which already includes internationally renowned artists Karla Black, Christine Borland Anne Collier, Jacqueline Donachie, Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Victoria Morton, Charlotte Prodger and Hito Steyerl. These recent acquisitions have been made possible through the support of a number of grant funders and organisations supporting the development of public collections. Of particular importance is acquisition of the capsule collection of work by Carol Rhodes (1959 -2018) which includes the painting Land Levels and Rises. Although Rhodes was one of the most respected and admired painters in Scotland, her work was until now not represented in the civic collection of Glasgow, the city where she lived and worked. The acquisition of this painting, and a subsequent generous gift of a framed drawing and three prints, acknowledge her contribution to visual art in the city and her standing as a key British painter of the late 20th and early 21st century. -

Garth Illingworth1, Daniel Magee1, Rychard Bouwens2, Pascal Oesch3, Ivo Labbe2, Pieter van Dokkum3, Katherine Whitaker4, Bradford Holden1, Marijn Franx2, and Valentino Gonzalez5 Abstract We have submitted to MAST the 1.5 version data release of the Hubble Legacy Fields (HLF) project covering a 25 x 25 arcmin area over the GOODS-S (ECDF-S) region from the HST archival program AR-13252. The release combines exposures from Hubble's two main cameras, the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS/WFC) and the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3/IR), taken over more than a decade between mid-2002 to the end of 2016. The HLF includes essentially all optical (ACS/WFC F435W, F606W, F775W, F814W and F850LP filters) and infrared (WFC3/ IR F098M, F105W, F125W, F140W and F160W filters) data taken by Hubble over the original CDF-S region including the GOODS-S, ERS, CANDELS and many other programs (31 in total). The data has been released at https://archive.stsci.edu/prepds/hlf/ as images with a common astrometric reference frame, with corresponding inverse variance weight maps. We provide one image per filter of WFC3/IR images at 60 mas per pixel resolution and two ACS/WFC images per filter, at both 30 and 60 mas per pixel. Since this comprehensive dataset combines data from 31 programs on the GOODS-S/CDF-S, the AR proposal identified the MAST products by the global name "Hubble Legacy Field”, with this region being identified by “HLF-GOODS-S”. -

THE GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART RESEARCH EXCELLENCE FRAMEWORK SUBMISSION The Ground Around group exhibition contribution Author/Creator Carol Rhodes (Painting/Printmaking) The Ground Around, June 6 to July 11, 2010, a collective, cross-media and cross-generational exhibition at Vilma Gold gallery, London, curated by Charles Asprey, exploring themes of environment, psychology and the land. OUTPUT Carol Rhodes, Pond Area, 2009, oil on board, 50 x 57 cm (exh. Vilma Gold, London, 2010) Carol Rhodes, Hillside, 2009, oil on board, 28 x 42 cm (exh. Vilma Gold, London, 2010) Rhodes showed two paintings in the context of a multi-media, cross-generational exhibition (http://www.vilmagold.com/newpages/previous/groundaround.htm). Themes were engaged in various ways across the artists' works: ground, depicted literally in the gritty surface of ‘Slag Heap’ by Prunella Clough and the ‘avalanche’ of Wolfgang Tillmans, reminds viewers of the energy and beauty contained within the Earth; Dan Peterman and Isa Genzken choose to examine this area more intimately by focusing on the nature of the material both under and on the surface of their respective studio floors, while the experience of the muddy intractability of trench warfare provides the starting point for Paul Nash’s pastel of 1917. Waseem Ahmed’s contemplative suicide bomber and Ian Hamilton Finlay’s use of Nazi-era iconography, equate illusions of paradise and gardening with terror and blitzkrieg, while Manfred Pernice’s ocean-going buoy seems to have been just dumped onto land after a mythical storm, a beachcomber’s trophy. The selection of these works for an exhibition is in no way an attempt to represent a movement or style or suggest an inter-generational pattern spanning almost 100 years.
