Any Del Llibre 2 La ciudad como escenario literario Todos tenemos una imagen mental de determinadas ciudades en las que quizá nunca hemos estado pero que hemos conocido a través de los ojos de sus escritores. El Londres de Charles Dickens, el París de Balzac o Baudelaire, la Alejandría de Durrell, la Venecia de Thomas Mann, el Nueva York de Dos Passos, Celine o Paul Auster…, las ciudades recreadas por los escritores adquieren una existencia propia y autónoma y son uno de los signos característicos de la modernidad literaria y urbana. Barcelona ha mantenido históricamente una estrecha relación con el mundo de los libros. Cuna de editores, seno y ciudad de acogida de escritores, sus calles han sido también el escenario de las ficciones, reflexiones y cantos de numerosos autores, que han contribuido a poblar el imaginario colectivo. De Narcís Oller a Juan Marsé, pasando por Jacint Verdaguer, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria de Sagarra, Josep Pla, Mercè Rodoreda, Carmen Laforet, LIBROS Montserrat Roig, Maria Aurèlia Capmany, Jaime Gil de Biedma, Eduardo Mendoza, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, Terenci Moix, Quim Monzó o Carlos Ruiz Zafón, son innumerables los autores residentes en la ciudad que la han inmortalizado. Pero también un buen número de visitantes, desde el propio Miguel de Cervantes hasta George Orwell y Robert Hughes, Camilo José Cela o Jean Genet, la han tomado como escenario de sus páginas. Relata Adolfo Bioy Casares, en sus deliciosas y boswellianas memorias, que Borges y él estaban un día realizando una de las múltiples antologías de relatos policiales que hacían de vez en cuando para Emecé, cuando se les ocurrió preguntarse, a la vista de algunas injusticias que estaban cometiendo con algunos relatos que rechazaban pero que no eran de su gusto a pesar de que sabían eran buenos, si en el fondo cualquier antología no era más que el punto de vista de aquel que la realiza, sin más bases objetivas que su propio gusto. Borges, para recalcarlo, citó a Robert Graves que afirmó en su momento que cualquier antología lo que reflejaba era el carácter del antologizador. Al citar a la autoridad parecieron calmarse, entonces, y volvieron a la labor de desbroce. Y lo cierto es que esta sospecha aparece siempre que se enfrenta alguien a una antología aunque mucho peor es que en ella sean los autores los que decidan qué páginas de obras suyas se incluyan en la misma. Escribió Samuel Johnson que «a todo hombre al que un autor le pide la opinión sobre su obra se le somete a una tortura y no está obligado a decir la verdad». Cuando son los autores los que deciden sobre sus páginas, lo de estar o no obligado a decir la verdad desaparece en aras de una convicción: a pesar de estar convencidos de que lo que escogen es lo mejor de su obra, es casi seguro que se equivocarán.

While some translations of his poems have appeared in anthologies, journals, and various books, all English translations of Chūya are long out of print.

Just after the release of El vardero amante and Los hechos de Garcilaso de la Vega (1585, The Real Lover and The Facts of Garcilaso de la Vega), the Sevillian had become the best- known playwright in Madrid to the extent that, by the turn of the century, he had obtained the monopoly of the theatrical milieu, forcing other writers, like Cervantes, to print theirs plays instead of producing them on stage.
