To start, some of Morgan the law's provisions are for pilot pro- Griffith grams that, if suc- cessful, offer a basis for further use. One 9th District example is the Representativ authorization for comprehensive treatment centers. I believe these centers will benefit people struggling with addiction, and this pilot program should be expanded and more centers authorized in the future. The investigations continue into how so many pain pills could be available with so little apparent concern about where they were headed. As Vice Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, I have been an active participant in these examinations. So far, we have conducted an extensive inquiry into how small towns in West Virginia received millions of pills. The investigation has included grilling drug dis- tributors and officials with the Drug Enforcement Agency about their oversight of suspiciously large orders of pain pills. More recently, we have opened an investigation into some questionable practices of drug manufacturers; for instance, some have understated the addictive capabili- ties of their products, or used inappropriate, even ille- gal, tactics in selling them. We need answers from these manufacturers: what did they know about the addictive- ness of their products, and when did they know it? I joined with the bipartisan leadership of the Committee in sending opioid manufacturers what I call a "nastygram" that demands they turn over specific information. If they do not give us the information the American people deserve, my colleagues and I are ready to use the powers we have, including subpoenas if necessary, to get these answers. Once again, it's time for Pulaski County and Salem to bat- tle on the gridiron. Most of the time there is considerable at stake when the two programs meet and certainly that is the case on this occasion. Home field advantage is at stake which means the winner plays at home next week when the playoffs begin and the loser plays some- where they would rather not go. This will be the 45th time the two programs have faced off. Salem leads the series 26-19, and that's because the Spartans have won the last eight. Twice Salem has defeated the Cougars two times in the same season because of playing both during the regu- lar season and the playoffs. Just six years ago, Pulaski County led the series 19-18. Pulaski County comes into this battle as the third rated team in Region 4D at 7-2 on the season. Salem is 6th rated and 6-3. How close is this game on paper? The teams have faced six like opponents. PCHS head coach Stephen James believes the win over PH last week should give him team confidence heading into the con- frontation with Salem. "I think this is a confident team. These kids will not get back down because of Salem's reputation. I believe our kids like a big game. This is big. We'll be ready to play, and I think our kids will be very excited.'' James say there are no myster- ies concerning Salem. "They are very fundamental, they do the same things. They execute well so that means so will we have to do the same. They have size. They play physical. They will bring the ball right to us with a big, proven strong offensive line. Isiah Pursinger is a good tail- back, but you must also stop the fullback. Jack Gladden the quar- terback can hurt you with play action passes. It's like all the other times. You just have to pre- pare for what Salem does.'' Week to week, all season long, the most consistent aspect for Pulaski County has been the play of its defense. This appears to be a classic matchup of Salem's size and strength against the Cougars' quickness and aggression. "That's true,'' says James. "We like our defense. It has given us a chance to win all season. We think they can do the same at Salem. Those kids will get after it, but this is a game that will be decided in all areas. Big games are all the same in that you must play both sides of the football. We need to execute well offen- sively, block 'em. No turnovers, no penalties, and we must play well on special teams. It's going to take all of it.'' The Salem defense is led by down linemen Da'Jon Cardwell, 6-0, 294 and Luke Grinnell, 6-0, 295. The top tacklers are large, experienced linebackers Avery Close, 6-5, 235 and Bobby Pinello, 6-3, 240. They know such things are not in their future, but they will remember their high school careers all their lives, and they should remember how they went out with a great deal of pride. Arnett and Mariotti are what playing high school football is all about. I don't know why they care so much, but they do. I don't know why they prepared and worked so hard for the season, but they did. The important thing is they care enough about their program, their school, and all the other right things to want to, and are proof there is a lot in the sim- ple fact of wanting to. You do not have to be the biggest or most talented to excel in high school football. Sometimes you just need to want to bad enough. Arnett and Mariotti do. Their families, their school, their teammates, and their coaches should be very proud. Coaching them and play- ing alongside of them, has to be a pleasure. The Cougars play at rival Salem Friday. These two will be ready to go. I don't care how many games you win, or lose, and I hope the Cougars win them all, but if you always have players like Mariotti and Arnett, you would enjoy the experience. Both will be success- ful in life because even as teenagers, they have already demonstrated they know that hard work equals success. I have enjoyed watching and knowing them. I will miss them both.
