MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE spent the morning lecturing Postmaster General LOUIS DEJOY about the USPS -- oftentimes without asking a single question. When they asked questions, they sometimes sounded like this: Do you believe you need to follow the law? Is your backup plan to be pardoned like Roger Stone, Rep. JIM COOPER (D-Tenn.) asked? Why are the Democrats out to get you, Rep. JIM JORDAN (R-Ohio) queried? Why doesn’t this hearing about the USPS include debate about the PPP -- it’s a “waste of time,” Rep. CHIP ROY (R-Texas) said. In addition, the hearing was riddled with technical difficulties. REP. STEPHEN LYNCH (D-Mass.) asked if DEJOY would replace removed sorting machines -- DEJOY said no, but they couldn’t get around to figuring out why, because LYNCH had used up all of his time. MEANWHILE, millions of Americans are wondering if their prescription drugs are going to get delivered, if their mail-in votes will actually be counted and what elected officials are actually doing to make their lives better in the middle of a pandemic and economic recession. -

OSW Commentary CENTRE FOR EASTERN STUDIES NUMBER 341 23.06.2020 www.osw.waw.pl Ultraorthodox Jews in Israel – epidemic as a measure of challenges Marek Matusiak In Israel as in other countries, when the COVID-19 epidemic surfaced it exacerbated the existing divi- sions and tensions in society. A group that came under severe attack from the public was the Jewish Ultraorthodox population (the Haredi). This was due to disregard on the part of certain ultraorthodox groups of the restrictions imposed in response to the epidemic and an exceptionally high infection rate in that community – as much as 70% of cases recorded from February until May this year affected members of that community.1 This non-conformity with the regulations by some Haredi (in fact a distinct minority) resonated broadly because it was an element of a decades-long heated dispute over the state’s approach towards the group and its place in Israeli society. Over the years, the issue has repeatedly caused severe shockwaves (including collapse of government coalitions). The stance adopted by the Haredi during the initial phase of the epidemic provided critics of the Haredi with new arguments that they are de facto a law unto themselves, and as a result are becoming increasingly socially and politically problematic. While COVID-19 cannot be expected to significantly change the subjects under debate, the arguments used in the debate, or the balance of power, it will make the dispute even more complex than before the epidemic and lead to greater polarisation. This will further complicate Israel’s efforts to meet challenges posed by the rapid increase in the community’s population. -

Christian Zionists are using politics as a way to fulfill Biblical prophecy, by influencing powerful politicians in all levels of government to support Israel. The most vocal, and prominent leader within the Christian Zionist movement is Pastor John Hagee. Through the establishment of his organization Christians United for Israel, Hagee has localized and given a tangible center for Christian Zionist activists. Additionally, the movement has gained membership as it was established in the model of a grassroots organization. Hagee has become a well known figure in the political community, and garners national media attention. While it has become fashionable in recent times to criticize Jewish organizations such as AIPAC, it is the Christian Zionist organizations which yield a large portion of power in Washington. However, it is crucial to realize that while CUFI and groups like it may yield some power in Washington, and account for some of the decision making that goes into U.S. -

ANTIGONI ZOURNATZI Cyrus the Great as a “King of the City of Anshan”* The Anshanite dynastic title of Cyrus the Great and current interpretations Since its discovery in the ruins of Babylon in 1879, the inscribed Cylinder of Cyrus the Great (fig. 1)1 has had a powerful impact on modern perceptions of the founder of the Persian empire. Composed following Cyrus’ conquest of Babylon in 539 BC and stressing above all his care for the Babylonian people and his acts of social and religious restoration, the Akkadian text of the Cylin- der occupies a central place in modern discussions of Cyrus’ imperial policy.2 This famous document is also at the heart of a lively scholarly controversy concerning the background of Cyrus’ dynastic line. The Persian monarch Darius I –who rose to the throne approximately a decade after the death of Cyrus the Great and who founded the ruling dynasty * This paper was initially presented in the First International Conference Iran and the Silk Road (National Museum of Iran, 12-14 February 2011). A pre-publication ver- sion was kindly hosted by Pierre Briant on Achemenet (Zournatzi 2011, prompting the similar reflections of Stronach 2013). Fifty years have passed, and we are stronger and certainly much more successful. We will have all the international sup- port when we have the confidence. We need to know that this is our land. We will never return to the ‘67 borders. Former Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) (Arutz Sheva, March 28, 2017) The Israeli settler movement is not only one of the most enduring social movements in recent history, having been active for over fifty years now, but it is also widely seen as one of the most successful. Observers on both sides of the highly polarized issue of Israel’s politics in the West Bank agree on little, but all accept that the settler movement is one of the most important actors on this issue. For example, Likud member and then- Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, who has served as President of Israel since 2014, has thanked the settlers for keeping Zionism alive (Kikar Hashabat, August 3, 2011), while Labor Party Member of Knesset (the Israeli Parliament) Stav Shaffir has argued that the left-wing camp should learn from the settler movement, because, although accounting for only a tiny percent of the population, they have managed to establish facts on the ground so that the next generation will grow up in a messianic and extremist society (At Magazine, August 1, 2018). -

JONATHAN: Well, when I wrote The Harbinger, I knew that the mystery wasn't finished. First, there was so much to be revealed that I could not put in The Harbinger. In fact, more than I put in The Harbinger was what I couldn't put in. Secondly, the mystery continued. America has been continuing moving to judgment.
