Technical Advisors: 3.0 Public Comment KAREN HUMELBAUGH No public comment. Director, Office of Workforce Investments 4.0 Consent Agenda KURT TACKMAN Stefan reviewed the minutes from the last meeting, and reported out that he has since Deputy-Director, Office of met with Ben (HECC) and Colt (ODE) to discuss the STEM Education Plan. He has Workforce Investments meetings with other agencies lined up as well. Rita Hansen made a motion to approve the December 2, 2020 minutes, Nikki STEM Staff: Salenger seconded. None opposed. Minutes approved. JULIA STEINBERGER Director 5.0 Directors Update SYDNEY KING Julia Steinberger gave the Council an update on the STEM Education Plan, and the Board Administrator STEM Survey results. All meetings of the STEM Investment Council are open to the public and will conform to Oregon public meetings laws. STEM Investment Council January 29th, 2021 MINUTES (continued) Karen Humelbaugh covered what council members can do as far as advocacy or “lobbying”. You are able to advocate with whatever ‘hat’ you have at the time. You just Members: need to identify what you are representing at the time when talking with a legislator. STEFAN BIRD, Chair Stefan will be presenting to the WTDB and HECC. Members may be asked to join. BETH ALCOULARME MARCELINO ALVAREZ The Council discussed and agreed to support this motion. Nikki Salenger made a HERB FRICKE motion to support ODE in the Governor’s budget. Rita seconded. None abstained. RITA HANSEN Motion passed. MARV NELSON LISA POWELL 6.0 Oregon Department of Education Update NIKKI SALENGER PAUL STEWART Director Alexa Pearson has been working closely with the STEM hubs to work on the STEM Innovation Grants. Some highlights below: Advisory Members: • ODE came out with new guidance for school districts. YOLANDA COLEMAN • Starting the hiring process to help manage a grant that will help support the MELISSA DUBOIS STEM Hubs. PRESTON EAGLEHEART • The State Board of Education is very excited about this work. ANDY GRZESKOWIAK JESSICA HOWARD KATRINA HULL 7.0 STEM Hub Updates ANDREW LATTANNER 7.1 Tracy Crews, Interim Director of the Oregon Coast STEM Hub. Highlights of her NAGI NAGANATHAN presentation: KYLE RITCHEY-NOLL • Blue Economy – any job that is water-related like; coastal engineering, SUSAN SHUGERMAN climate change, tourism, fisheries and ocean management. CARA TURANO • Martitime Innovation Center (MIC) – fairly new initiative, workshopping a LELA THIEME new name. This project was brought about in response to the wildfires. TONG ZHANG Focusing on the Blue Economy. • Oregon Marine Scientist and Educator Alliance program connects kids with Technical Advisors: maritime work and education, that encourages pathways into the maritime KAREN HUMELBAUGH career path. Director, Office of Workforce Investments • CS Drive is another project funded by an Innovation Grant from ODE, a computer science drive. Workforce Investments The Council had a robust discussion, Julia stressed how important it is for STEM Hubs and the State board work together. STEM Staff: 7.2 Jarvez Hall, Director of East Metro STEM Hub, introduced his team and gave an JULIA STEINBERGER overview of the programs: Director • ‘We Make Things’ – connects career connected learning and business in East SYDNEY KING County Board Administrator • Partnership with Saturday Academy that offers online STEM/STEAM courses to East County students. 2 • Youth Advisory Council – the goal is to have 15 students with at least one from Page each of their 7 school districts. They will be trained in graphic design type courses, and students will create actual marketing materials for East Metro. STEFAN BIRD, Chair BETH ALCOULARME 8.0 Oregon STEM Update MARCELINO ALVAREZ Myronda Schiding introduced Christy Christensen, Karla Clark and Heidi Larwick. HERB FRICKE Karla introduced the topic of starting the Oregon STEM Board, and Myronda RITA HANSEN explained the why. Below are some highlights of their oral presentation: MARV NELSON • LISA POWELL All 4 supporters of this effort have full time day jobs, it is difficult to advocate NIKKI SALENGER for things you are passionate about, so one focus of theirs is to centralize the PAUL STEWART leadership to speak to senators • There is money in the bank, and first board meeting is next week.
