School! It is an exciting time for your students as they enter into the middle years. This is a time of self- discovery, extended learning and preparation for High School and beyond. Our staff takes pride in their work with students and they also work to ensure that students, too, take PRIDE in all they accomplish. At SMMS this is what PRIDE means to us: Perseverance Responsibility Integrity Diversity Excellence These words represent what we are about and what we expect from all who teach and learn here. The next two years are critical years for your student and although your child may seem more independent, he or she still needs your constant support. I encourage you to become a part of the life of middle school! There are many ways you can be involved. Visit our website for more information on how you can volunteer and contribute to the success of your child’s middle school experience. Finally, please read this handbook. It has critical information for both you and your child. Students will receive most of this information through advisory lessons so this will allow you to be informed as well. Once again, welcome! South Meadows General Information Adult Supervision Adult supervision is provided to students during regular school hours, while traveling on District provided vehicles to and from school, and while engaged in District-sponsored activities. Sometimes it’s good to break the rules. When I became editor of the Argus Opinion page earlier this year, I wrote an unsigned editorial (Feb. 2) that expressed the hope we could cultivate a com- munity conversation in print and online. Today’s page reflects what I had in mind when I wrote: “We will continue to publish letters to the edi- tor, guest columns and keep a local, local, local focus on the issues addressed here. And we will endeavor to build on that, by embracing the view that the entire community benefits when we are exposed to a wide spectrum of perspectives and opinions — not just from elected officials and other community leaders, but from people who live and work and go to school here, whether they are new arrivals or people whose roots go back generations.” Scan the page and you’ll see what I mean.
