Social Media Update

Peachtree’s presence on Social Media continues to expand. Our Facebook page continues to grow with 182 active members. Since January 1st we’ve added 44 members to the group and have had 238 posts by members and friends of the group. We’ve also created our own YouTube channel, MBCA Peachtube where we have been posting our video content. Auto Renew

Many of you know that MBCA has been in a downward spiral with membership growth and retention. In January the club implemented the Auto-Renew program as way to help members insure that their memberships renew on time, never accidentally lapse, and relieve them of having to handle their membership renewal manually by either going on line or calling the office to renew their membership and most importantly to help stabilize the clubs cash flow. Our section currently has 38 members who have opted into Auto-Renew. Thank you to those who chosen to do so. My goal is to have fifty percent of the section’s membership enrolled in Auto-Renew by the end of the year. To reach that goal we need 204 more members to opt into Auto-Renew. Please consider taking a few minutes to do so. Log into your MBCA account https://www.mbca.org/ select the Auto-Renew option. When you select Auto- Renew you will be prompted to enter or update your credit card information if not already on file. You can also contact the NBO at 800-637-2360 and someone on the staff will assist you to opt into the Auto-Renew program. Thank you for being a Peachtree Section Member, Anouncements Diana Quinn Past President / Membership Director

COVID 19 has totally disrupted our lives and many of the activities we’ve become accustomed to doing. Things like getting together with our friends, enjoying attending section events and getting out and meeting with fellow club members. However, one thing that has been severely affected is our ability to meet other Mercedes-Benz owners, tell them about the club and encourage them to join. We expect new member growth to be severely impacted this year because of our inability to host recruiting events. How can you help ensure that we stabilize our membership losses? Have you opted into Auto-Renew yet? When it’s time to renew your membership, it’s now easier than ever. Simply log into your MBCA account, select the Renew link at the top of the page and click on the Yes button in the renew section. Your best deal is to renew for 3-years. That’s all there is to it!

Why Auto-Renew? 1. Don’t miss an issue of the Star® Magazine. 2. Never worry about your membership lapsing. 3. Stay informed of local section and national events via your local section’s newsletter and the national Click announcements. 4. Have a chance to participate on of our annual Germany trips to visit Mercedes-Benz headquarters in Stuttgart. 5. Have a chance at winning a new Mercedes-Benz by participating in our annual raffles. 6. Lastly, by having your membership Auto-Renew each year, you help the club stay financially sound and help to stabilize our membership losses. 7. Your credit card data is not stored or kept at the NBO. All Data is stored on secured servers by our credit card processing vendor The Auto-Renew option is new this year. Our goal for 2020 is to have 50 to 75 percent of our members sign up for Auto-Renew. Right now, we’re at 6 percent with 1059 members who have already signed up. We need your help to reach our goal this year by signing up for Auto-Renew today. That’s it. If you have any problems opting in or questions, contact the NBO at 1800- 637-2360, and a member representative will be happy to assist you in getting enrolled. I encourage you to sign up for Auto-Renew today. Thank you for being a member of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. Doug Geganto National Membership Chair Peachtree Section Adapts

By Gary Edwards Peachtree section had a problem – a busy schedule of 2020 events starting in March, and a Georgia statewide stay-at-home order. All Peachtree scheduled events through mid-June were ultimately cancelled or postponed. The section also cancelled the in-person April Board of Directors meeting in favor of a Zoom Video Teleconference (VTC). This sparked an idea - Peachtree Vice President and Technical Director Gary Edwards emailed Past President, retired IT professional and webmaster Diana Quinn, “Can I have a VTC tech session?” Diana responded “Of course! I’ve been thinking about what we could offer the club during this social isolation and I think it’s a great idea!”. This started Peachtree Section down the path to a sequence of successful virtual events by VTC, eventually bringing them to a national audience. Gary led a VTC session on March 28th on the M117 engine with 24 Peachtree section members online. He

Anouncements covered the two and a half months of work he had done on his 1973 450SL, emphasizing actions needed to prevent severe engine damage, covering cam oiler tubes, and upper guide and timing chain replacement with plenty of time for questions and answers. The post event survey showed a strong desire for more technical sessions. It also disclosed a desire for a recording of the event – an “ah-ha” moment for Diana Quinn and Scott Martin – Scott committed to recording future events and Diana immediately put together Peachtree’s own YouTube channel “MBCA PeachTube”. -4- The section had postponed an R107/R129 gathering which had been scheduled on April 18th. Knowing that date would be open on everyone’s schedule, and still in the throes of social distancing, Peachtree Section scheduled a two-hour R107/ R129 discussion VTC, recruiting presenters from Board of Directors members and event planners. Peachtree President Joe Martin’s vision was to open this event up well beyond Peachtree Section, and with the help of Eastern Regional Director Doug Geganto, National President Judy Bruggner and Business Manager Cindy Tumbleson to publicize the event, over 140 people registered. Topics as diverse as buyer’s guides, safety innovations, lessons learned from ownership and others were covered. The feedback again showed a big appetite for technical information. To feed this appetite, Peachtree Section then recruited National Technical Advisor George Murphy for VTC sessions on May 2nd and June 6th. The topics were “Care of Your Electronic Mercedes-Benz” in May and “Care of Your Aging 107SL” in June. The sessions were advertised nationally, and each had over 200 participants. George did a great job discussing both topics and the feedback showed a real hunger for his tech sessions. Peachtree President Martin then asked, “Why can’t we have a virtual component to every event?” He also asked Rally Master Jim Fekete if he could accelerate his Time Speed Distance (TSD) rally training, scheduled for October, into a VTC event. Jim responded enthusiastically and put together a two-session rally training event with a no-contact training rally between the two sessions. Jim planned this using a smartphone app for scoring of the rally (Competitor Richta Checkpoint) and he arranged for the writer of this app, Rich Bireta, to attend the first session to field app specific questions. Jim’s initiative to use this app for Peachtree Section TSD rallies (a first for Peachtree and for many in MBCA) will allow running of rallies with no checkpoint workers, greatly simplifying management of the event. There were 45 people registered from as far away as Massachusetts and the training sessions went very well. Rather than cancelling a previously scheduled Joint event on Photography in Augusta with Carolina section for June 20th, Peachtree again adapted. As the virus restrictions became clear, the section first transitioned the event to a small in-person audience combined with a VTC virtual audience. As the event drew near and virus concerns remained, it made more sense to shift to an on-line only event. Photographer Al Floer did a great job of explaining camera settings and basic composition; several participants’ feedback indicated they made immediate improvements in their photography. Peachtree also transitioned an in-person concours judging school on 27 June into the first VTC concours judging class. Concours Chair Diana Quinn coordinated with National Concours Chair Pete Lesler, who sat in, providing guidance and clarification. With Pete’s guidance, 32 members were trained on scoring, judges’ responsibilities, frequent deductions and after taking a quiz, were certified as MBCA concours judges. The stay at home virus response has fundamentally changed the way the section looks at events. With a large geographic area but a concentration of members around Atlanta, most events are held around the Atlanta area, Anouncements

-5- forcing those in other areas to drive long distances to attend events. Peachtree Vice President Edwards comments, “At first, we were doing events by VTC because it was our only option. Then we realized that some events are better by VTC; for example, tech sessions – nobody is in the back of the room out of earshot and everyone has an equal opportunity to see what the presenter is pointing out. For tech sessions with large audiences when you don’t have the ultimate technical authority as your presenter, you can “crowd source” answers to tech questions using the “chat to everyone” feature of ZOOM in parallel with the presentation. Additionally, you can cover shorter topics – if I’m going to drive two and a half hours each way to Atlanta for an event, I want it to last more than an hour – but you have the freedom to run shorter events via VTC.” Peachtree President Martin sees the benefit of a virtual presence in making it easier for members to “attend” events without long transits to get there and it also allows those in vulnerable groups to avoid contact. He adds, “We are evaluating all of our scheduled events to see whether a virtual presence is appropriate. I recognize that the in-person interactions are important, but if we can reach more people by including them via VTC, then we do both them and the club a great service, especially in a time when membership is a concern.” Peachtree Section uses their website www.mbcapeachtree.com and their Facebook page to update followers on their quite dynamic schedule. Recordings of events are posted on their YouTube channel “MBCA PeachTube”, Everyone is encouraged to “like” and “follow” them on their YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UC3V_FvbPxLgHQhDqb0h7cYw. , their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/mbcapeachtree and/or Group “MBCAPeachtree” https://www.facebook.com/groups/mbcapeachtree/, bookmark the website events page https://www.facebook.com/groups/mbcapeachtree/events/ , or follow them on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mbcapeachtree/ and join in on the fun!

Introducing the new E53 AMG

May 26, 2020 – Affalterbach Mercedes-AMG continues to strengthen its distinctive range: the new E 53 Coupe and Cabriolet receive the iconic AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical slats, emphasizing its performance credentials and clear membership in the AMG family. When viewed from the front, its A-shaped design and new, flatter all-LED headlamps create a width-emphasizing, powerful impression. The restyled front bumper with its A-wing design also enhances the overall vehicle proportions. Thoroughly revised, the new interior also demonstrates a clear connection with distinctive AMG design. Large displays, a new AMG Performance steering wheel and the revolutionary MBUX infotainment system with AMG-specific functions and displays reinforce the characteristic AMG Performance Luxury ambience.

The AMG-enhanced 3.0L inline-6 turbo engine with electric auxiliary compressor generates an output of 429 hp Anouncements and produces a peak torque of 384 lb-ft. Its EQ Boost starter-generator briefly provides up to an additional 21 hp of output plus up to 184 lb-ft of torque, while also feeding the 48 V on-board electrical system. Other highlights of the new models include the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and the variable all-wheel drive system, AMG Performance 4MATIC+. -7- The front-end design is completely new and reinforces a clear AMG family affiliation. The key feature is the AMG-specific radiator grille with twelve vertical slats, which the E 53 Coupe and Cabriolet both receive. The A-shaped design of the front, which becomes broader towards the bottom, and the flatter, sharper-cut all-LED headlamps create an especially powerful impression. The twin power domes on the hood also contribute to this powerful impression. In the center section, the front bumper is drawn high into an A shape, creating a large air inlet grille with five vertical struts. Viewed from the side, the standard new 19-inch light-alloy wheels in an aerodynamically optimized 5-twin-spoke design catch the eye. Available as an option, 20-inch light-alloy wheels in a 5-twin-spoke design are also available, also aerodynamically optimized and with a wider rim edge, painted in a choice of matte black or high-gloss titanium grey. For the exterior color palette, Graphite Grey Metallic and designo Brilliant Blue Magno, a striking matte finish, are newly available selections, the latter previously reserved for the AMG GT family. 2020 E53 AMG Coupe With the optional AMG Night Package, the E 53 Coupe and Cabriolet embrace an even sportier appearance. The outside mirror housings, window frames, plus trim elements in the front and rear bumper are styled in high- gloss black. The tailpipe trim elements also come equipped in black chrome. The AMG Carbon Fiber Package II adds individual highlights with mirror caps and a spoiler lip on the trunk lid in carbon fiber.

Interior with sport appointments and AMG-specific displays The interior welcomes the occupants with distinctive appointments, luxurious materials and the latest-generation MBUX infotainment system. The standard seats upholstered in MB-Tex with DINAMICA microfiber in an AMG- specific design, red contrasting topstitching and AMG badging are characteristic for the AMG 53-series models and combine sport design with strong lateral support and comfort for long journeys. Further interior options include red seat belts and trim elements in carbon fiber. Further upholsteries in Nappa leather are also optionally available. A newly available interior option is the Nappa leather interior in black/titanium grey pearl with red contrasting topstitching. Two displays for the instrument cluster and multimedia screen blend together beneath a shared glass cover to form the Widescreen Cockpit. The customer can choose between three AMG display styles for the instrument cluster, including the particularly striking “Supersport” mode, featuring a central, round rev counter and additional information presented in perspective, with bars to the left and right of the rev counter, creating a spatial impression of depth. Via the AMG menu, the driver can select various special displays such as Engine Data, gear speed indicator, Warm-up, Set-up, G- Meter and RACETIMER. With individual AMG displays such as visualization of the drive programs or telemetry data, the touchscreen multimedia display also enhances the dynamic configuration. With a fresh design and seamlessly integrated buttons, the new AMG Performance steering wheel creates an even closer connection between driver and machine. The three rounded twin-spokes combine stability with lightness, while the flat-bottom steering wheel rim is a hallmark derived from motorsport. The wheel is available in leather, in DINAMICA microfiber or as a combination of leather and DINAMICA. The steering wheel rim also features a new sensor mat to recognize “hands-on” the wheel. If the driver does not have their hands on the steering wheel for a certain time, a warning sequence is started, which finally activates Emergency Brake Assist if the driver continues to be inactive.

Six-cylinder in-line engine with EQ Boost starter-generator and electric auxiliary compressor The 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine is characterized by top-of-the-range performance and intelligent electrification. The EQ Boost starter-generator combines a starter motor and alternator in a powerful electric motor and is located between the engine and transmission. It is a key component of the 48 V on-board electrical system and not only serves as an alternator but is also responsible for select hybrid functions. These include boosting with up to 21 hp of output and 184 lb-ft of torque, recuperation, shifting of the load point, gliding mode and the virtually imperceptible restarting of the engine with the start/stop function. Anouncements The AMG brake system is tuned for power and performance: the front axle features cross-drilled and internally vented discs, sized 14.6 x 1.4 in, with four-piston fixed calipers and AMG lettering, while the rear axle features internally vented discs, sized 14.2 x 1.0 in with single-piston floating calipers. The 3.0-liter inline-6 turbo engine is coupled with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed transmission, which -8- impresses with its extremely short shift times, fast response to shift commands, a double-declutching function, and multiple downshifts. The transmission is very responsive, especially in the “Sport+” drive program and in manual mode. Very responsive acceleration and very short shift times are both available, as well as a more fuel-efficient driving style, depending on the selected mode.

Adaptive AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension for more dynamism Enhanced agility, neutral cornering performance and greater traction come courtesy of the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension developed in Affalterbach. The multi-chamber air suspension with sporty spring/damper set-up and continuously adjustable damping ADS+ (Adaptive Damping System) combines outstanding driving dynamics with high levels of ride comfort. A harder spring rate, for example, when cornering and braking, effectively reduces body roll for better handling, while a softer spring rate can improve highway driving comfort. The damping at each wheel is adjusted to suit the current driving situation and the condition of the road. The damping characteristics can also be preselected in three modes, “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”, enabling a selectable differentiation between excellent long-distance comfort and more sporty driving dynamics.

-9- Member Spotlight - Darin Good By Steve Chapman One of Peachtree Section’s newest members has the Mercedes-Benz brand flowing through his veins. You see, Darin’s father was a former MBCA President of the Seattle Section. In fact, his father still has pristine 1972 350SL and a gorgeous 1990 560SEC (a personal favorite of mine) which has been highlighted in an article in The Star magazine. Darin’s Peachtree membership was a gift from his father - and we’re thankful Darin has been brought into the Peachtree Section family! Darin moved from the Pacific Northwest to the Atlanta area in the mid-90s just after the 1996 Olympic Games. And, while his automobile passion runs deep, albeit with a slight bent to the eccentric side - Darin has owned some very cool cars. Some of his formers cars have included such icons as a 1971 Cadillac El Dorado convertible in avocado green, the original BMW “James Bond” Z3 roadster in Atlanta Blue and a sincere love/hate relationship with a 1984 Maserati bi-turbo, which Darin still owns! It’s red of course. Today, Darin is sporting a gorgeous 2017 CLS550 4-Matic with all the AMG cosmetic goodies offered on this W218 chassis. The twin-turbo V8 has no issues hustling him along at speeds I don’t care to mention. The car is finished in beautiful Selenite Grey with matching painted wheels, and the interior is a striking black with contrasting stitching and black ash wood trim. Ironically, it’s the very first Mercedes he has owned. Seeing how both his parents cherished and drove Mercedes since the very early 80s (including a 1984 300D) which was traded in with 250,000 miles on a 1993 400E. The performance difference between the diesel and petroleum V8 was readily apparent by depressing the throttle! “Sexy” and “the best impractical car I’ve ever owned” are statements Darin has used to describe his 4-door coupe. I couldn’t agree more! Darin is looking forward to participating in driving tours or rallies. Please welcome him at a future Peachtree Section event! Features

-12- Officers Vote for Four

Candidate for President Steve Chapman Having been a Peachtree Section Member since 1995, I’ve enjoyed many activities over the years. However, the main reason my family and I have stayed involved is due to the wonderful people in MBCA. My wife, Stacey, and I have two boys 9 and 11 years old who keep us young! I’ve served the Peachtree Section as Secretary, Vice-President, President (twice) and on the Board in various capacities. Currently, I write the Member Spotlight article for Stars in Georgia. I would like to continue to support the Peachtree Section as President for the upcoming term. .

Candidate for Vice President Gary Edwards I want to serve as Peachtree President, so why am I again running for Vice President? Experience as Vice President is excellent preparation for service as President and I believe 2 years as Vice President is the most appropriate term. I also believe it’s important to have a Vice President who aspires to become President. Vice President is an important job and I’ve seen no one stepping forward who wants to do it – leaving the club without viable Vice President candidates if I run for President. I want to spend the next year as Vice President while attempting to recruit a future one. Our bylaws require that an officer serve as Director for a year prior to entering office - limiting candidates and emphasizing the importance of Director selection. I believe that growing our membership is our most important task, and I am convinced that events are the key to attracting and maintaining members. I would like to see a robust calendar of social, rally, technical, concours and driving events, continuing what’s worked well and adding Special Election others in an effort to reach out to both the 80% of our members who don’t currently participate and also to those aren’t members.

-13- Candidate for Treasurer Roger McKissick My name is Roger McKissick, and I would be honored to have your vote to serve again as Peachtree Section’s Treasurer. I have served continuously on the section’s board since 1979. I have been an automobile afficionado all my life and have owned seven models of Mercedes-Benz over the past 44 years, two of which we continue to own and very much enjoy. • Education: B.S. in B.A., Youngstown State Univ. • Career: Business Management. • Experience: Financials Development & Management, Budgeting I have a strong understanding of both the section’s financial history and its fiscal management. Due to the COVID-19 fiscal disruption, the budget-committee presented the board with a revised and balanced budget designed to ensure our ability to continue operating without a deficit. Moving forward, it will be my focus to help Peachtree Section work through these continuing fiscally troubled waters in a solvent and responsible manner. Thank you for your consideration of my nomination to serve as Peachtree Section’s Treasurer for the coming year it will continue to be my honor to serve responsibly and with integrity as your club’s treasurer.

Rusty became a fan of Mercedes Benz automobiles in the 1970s, enjoying several sedans owned by his family. His first Mercedes was acquired from his grandmother a 1978 450SL which she purchased new in 1978. He’s recently added a 2008 E63 AMG which he drives on a daily basis. Rusty has been an active member of the MBCA Peachtree section since joining, attending many social and technical events. -20- -21- Urban Survival Course at Atlanta Motorsports Park Saturday, August 8th

On Saturday August 8th, spend a day behind the wheel at Atlanta Motorsports Park and learn life-saving advanced driving skills from professional instructors. We’ll learn about skids using the wet skid pad and ice hill, transient car control using a short autocross course, and straight braking and turning while braking using ABS. This course is normally for teen drivers using school cars, but we’ve arranged a special convening for our group, driving our own cars. Teens are of course welcome too, as long as they have a driver’s license or a learner’s permit. The course will run from 9 am to 3:30 pm and the cost is $299 which includes lunch, snacks, soft drinks and water throughout the day. A certificate of completion will be issued, which may help to reduce your insurance rates. We are limited to a maximum of 40 participants, so sign up early; for more information and to sign up, use this link: msreg.com/urbansurvival . MBCA membership / driving a Mercedes is not required. This course will be held rain or shine (rain increases the effectiveness of this course). For questions contact event planner Gary Edwards at edwardsgw@nu-z. net or call 757 831-9556. Via ZOOM Teleconference August 22, 2020 With George Murphy

Join us for a great Tech Talk video-teleconference (VTC) on Saturday, August 22nd, 11 am (Eastern Daylight Time) when MBCA National Technical Advisor George Murphy will present “Recovering a Long-stored “Barn Find” Mercedes-Benz.” George will tell the story of an early R129 500SL with very low mileage that sat unused for over 25 years. He returned it to operation in a lengthy and arduous process. The lessons learned are generally applicable to all cars that have been sitting for a long time – with the current craze for barn finds, it’s an especially timely topic! Following his presentation, we have plenty of time for questions and answers on this, or any other Mercedes topic. We will be limiting registrations to only 250, so register now! The cost will $10 per registration.

-22- R107/R129 Gathering 1972 – 2001

Saturday September 12:: Lincolnton GA Event Planner -Dean Prince If you are a proud owner of an R107/R129 Mercedes, or are considering acquiring one, come to the Peachtree Section gathering on Saturday, September 12 in Lincolnton, GA. The whole event is outside and provides ample space for social distancing. Building upon a successful R107 gathering in 2019, we are adding the next generation SL, the R129, to this year’s gathering. Our plan is to meet up at the Lincoln County Historical Park, Lincolnton GA where we will admire these great vehicles, have lunch (pizza), socialize, and discuss car valuations and technical issues. The R107 and R129 are the insider’s designation for the Mercedes SL sold in the US from 1972 to 2001. At various times the R107s were called the 350SL, 450SL, 380SL and the 560SL. The R129s were called 300SL, 320SL, 500SL, 600SL, SL320, SL500, SL600 (in the US). R107s and R129s are generally quite reliable and are great driving machines. Both of these models are still quite reasonably priced, and we expect an increase in values for nice examples over time. Not yet an owner of an R107/R129? Now may be the time to purchase and this event will be a great time to learn about the cars by talking with owners and viewing many examples. It will be a fun event and anyone with an interest in the R107/R129 should plan to attend! Mid-September is a great time to get out and enjoy your SL. The drive to Lincolnton from the Atlanta area is about a 2½ hours and one can take the interstate or back country roads. Put the top down and enjoy Georgia in the early fall. For questions, contact Dean Prince at [email protected]. Mail Peach Page registrations to Dean Prince 3909 Blustery Way NE, Marietta, GA 30066

-27- October 24, 2020 Event Planners: JoAnne Taylor and Ernie Smallman

Anticipate a scenic view of the North Georgia mountains in full color with the stunning view of three of the most interesting waterfalls in the state as check points. Plan on meeting at the amphitheater at the top of Amicalola Falls, near Dawsonville, to receive your instructions, water, and snacks at 11:00 A.M. You will also receive fail-safe envelopes that can be opened if your GPS lets you down traversing between falls. Plan on wearing sturdy comfortable walking shoes and a good attitude. You will drive the course at your leisure spending as much time as you want at the three waterfalls.

Amicalola Falls is in a state park that requires a $4.00 per car entry fee or a state park pass. Take the first left after entering the park onto the Top of the Falls road to reach the amphitheater. There is ample parking in three locations at the top of the falls. There are a couple of ways to get the most out of visiting this beautiful spot. • The trek from the top to the bottom of the falls is down “425 steps” along a series of stairs and landings that cross a bridge spanning the waterfall’s upper third. The walk is considered “strenuous”. This is the most difficult walk of the three falls we’ll visit. • Alternatively, you can visit the top of the falls and take in the splendid view. There is a mid-falls view which has an accessible trail to a bridge crossing the falls. It is a gentle slope from the parking lot down to the bridge, where you find yourself literally in the middle of the falls! The next leg of your journey is forty-eight miles winding through the Dahlonega wine country to Anna Ruby Falls, outside of Helen, GA. You may elect to have lunch in Helen, but it is expected to be crowded with long waits this time of the fall season. Or, you may want to pack your own picnic and enjoy one of the many picnic spots in Unicoi State Park. Anna Ruby Falls is in the Unicoi State Park ($3.00 per passenger fee unless you bring along your state park pass). A half mile paved trail with handrails and benches takes one from the parking lot to the base of the waterfall at an observation deck. Two creeks meet to form three tall falls that merge the water at the base of the falls. The walk and the entry fee are well worth the spectacular view. We rated this trek moderate due to some steep portions of the paved trail. The trail has several resting points with benches.

The third leg of your Georgia waterfall tour is Minnehaha Falls, a twenty-five-mile drive from Anna Ruby Falls along the banks of Lake Burton with its colorful boat houses. Parking is along a two-lane road. The falls are on Georgia Power property, thus no entry fee. The walk is half mile. The slope is gradual, the trail is primitive dirt unimproved but generally moderate. The fall is one hundred feet high cascading down a series of rock shoals. Again, the hike is well worth your time and the falls are breathtaking. One ends up at the actual foot of the falls as opposed to an observation deck.

Your next destination is Kaya Vineyards and Winery back near Dahlonega, an eighteen-mile drive. The tasting room and Winery was built atop a ridge that is sixteen-hundred feet above sea level elevation offering “the most exquisite panoramic mountain view in North Georgia”. The tasting room features a two-thousand square foot covered deck that is ideal for weary thirsty hikers. Your reward for completing the drive and waterfall tour is a colorful green vintage pre-worn feel shirt courtesy of the Atlanta and Ashville Trails Anticipate a scenic view of the North Georgia mountains in full color Events with the stunning view of three of the most interesting waterfalls in the state as check points. Plan on meeting at the amphitheater at the top of Amicalola Falls, near Dawsonville, to receive your instructions, Minnehaha Falls water, and snacks at 11:00 A.M. You will also receive fail-safe -28- envelopes that can be opened if your GPS lets you down traversing between falls.

Your reward for completing the drive and waterfall tour is a colorful green vintage pre-worn feel shirt courtesy of the Atlanta and Ashville Trails Association that has a tasteful waterfall rendering on the front with the inscription-“Perfect Weekends are Made of Mountain Waterfalls and Fresh Air”. Top your day off with a glass of wine or tasting of five different wines-your treat to yourself. Kaya offers a limited menu of sandwiches and salads. Those with bigger more ambitious appetites can motor ten miles to imbibe in Dahlonega’s night life. Peachtree members wishing to remain overnight are encouraged to do so at the yet-to-open Holiday Inn Express on E Main St in the heart of Dahlonega. We will send out an email blast as soon as this hotel opens so that members can make reservations if they wish. In addition, there are many lovely B’n’Bs in Dahlonega, reservations for this date will fill up quickly! Registration is $5.00 per car. -30- MBCA TSD Rally Nov. 15, 2020 This will be a straightforward daytime TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) rally. On a TSD rally, a team consisting of a driver and a navigator are given a set of instructions that contain directions for following a measured route at a specified speed (or speeds). Based on this information, the objective is to arrive at a series of checkpoints exactly on time. Points are assessed for being early or late. Like golf, the lowest score wins. This event will be a straight-forward timing competition, with no complex instructions, traps or other not-fun course following stuff. All turns will be clearly identified and mileaged. Speeds will be set below posted limits and will allow for enjoying the roads and the scenery. Rest stops will be provided. The challenge will be staying on time. Scoring will be done through a smartphone app which uses GPS technology, eliminating the need for checkpoint control workers and allowing for more flexibility in locating checkpoints. Although the details are far from complete, we anticipate the route to be approximately 100 miles, which should allow for about four hours of driving on beautiful Georgia roads, followed by a meal and awards presentation at a venue to be named. Opportunities to learn more will be made available at a “TSD Rally School” to be held earlier on the day of the event, and possibly a second school some days before the event. Keep an eye on “Stars in Georgia” for further details as they become available! For more information, contact Jim Fekete at 734 718 5032 ([email protected])” Peachtree Section Holiday Luncheon

At Petite Violette Event Planner: Ernie Smallman and Patricia Duer December 5, 2020 at 1130 AM Petite Violette is described by Atlanta Eats as “Atlanta’s premier family owned and operated French restaurant”. Started in 1974 by Wolfgang Gropp, under the name Petite Auberge, Petite Violette has delivered fine French cuisine for over forty-six years. Now owned by the two sons of Wolfgang, Michael and Anthony, the proud tradition continues of serving residents and visitor of Atlanta with a “one-of-a kind” dining experience, exceptional food, and attentive service. The restaurant’s reputation led the Atlanta Opera Company to partner with Petite Violette to host a series of “Dinner with a Diva” performances. A four-course dinner is paired with performers singing between each course. The event planners discovered Petite Violette when they attended Dinner and a Diva performances of Les Misérables and later Porky and Bess. Both the American Culinary Federation and Le Cordon Bleu seek out Petite Violette for their students to do externships and apprenticeships. Several successful chefs at other Atlanta restaurants got their start as students under the tutelage of Wolfgang’s son and present lead chef Anthony. Our menu will be:

Salad de Noel: Mixed greens topped with walnuts, cranberries, grape tomatoes, feta cheese and garlic herb croutons served with house French vinaigrette.

Entrée choice of either: Boeuf Bourguignon: Slow roasted short rib topped with button mushrooms, pearl onions, and carrots with a Burgundy sauce. Mediterranean Sea Bass: Pan seared topped with sautéed spinach, tomato and garlic, served over pommes puree with a beurre blanc sauce.

Diana Quinn, Concours Chair The Concours Judging School is one of several key events leading up to the Concours d’Elegance. As the COVID-19 pandemic emerged the Concours team members (Gary Edwards and Eric Gilmer and Diana Quinn) had to find a way to safely hold this event. Without judges the Concours event scheduled for September 19th was in jeopardy. But how could the course be taught without having some cars to inspect? And, how could they satisfy the need to certify those attending the course? After some quick thinking, the team thought if there was a good photographic content that could be used to illustrate the various typical issues found while judging that the course could be taught virtually. What about certification? A quick call to Pete Lesler, MBCA National Concours Chair thought that if a “Test” could be developed at the end of the course that could satisfy the certification requirement. Gary Edwards, Vice President and Technical Director began the work to find the various examples and reorganized the materials to be presented virtually via ZOOM. Gary consulted with Eric Gilmer, Peachtree Director and Pete Lesler as he worked to develop examples ensuring the appropriate concepts were clearly presented. Gary developed the test questions. Once the certification test was developed and reviewed, Diana Quinn loaded the test questions into ZOOM using the polling feature. On Saturday, June 27th, the first virtual Concours Judging School became a reality in a big way. Pete Lesler joined 32 MBCA member from nine different Sections! (Peachtree, Greater Washington, Carolinas, Central Virginia, Seattle, Southwest Florida, Los Angeles, Delaware Valley and Southern Stars.) The virtual format allowed for members across the country to participate. Gary Edwards presented the course with Eric Gilmer and Pete Lesler who answered participant questions along the way. Participants learned: • Why we teach Concours Judging • Entrant Etiquette • Judge’s Etiquette • Scoring Methodology (100 pt system) • Show vs Street classes • Most frequently deducted areas with scoring breakdown by area of the vehicle (Interior, Exterior, Chassis, Chrome/ Trim, and Engine) The session ended with an 18-question quiz where all were able to participate answering the questions. Rich discussion ensued after each question enforcing the correct answer. Congratulations to all who successfully completed the course! If you missed the class and would like to learn about Concours Judging navigate to our YouTube channel: MBCA PeachTube for the recording of the course.

Halcyon/RBM of Alpharetta/MBCA Peachtree Section Mercedes-Benz Invitational Display Event

A Great Time Was Had at the Halcyon/RBM of Alpharetta/MBCA Peachtree Section Mercedes-Benz` by:Roger McKissick, Event Organizer RBM of Alpharetta and Halcyon Live/Work/Play Development reached out to Peachtree Section in early March to help them put on a Mercedes-Benz Invitational display event exclusive to Peachtree Section – MBCA. Their purpose was to help promote the soft launch of the new Halcyon/Alpharetta development and the first-of-its- kind Mercedes-Benz Experience Center located within the Halcyon complex. Despite the many organizational headwinds associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the result was fourteen of some of Peachtree Section’s finest vintage, classic, and modern classic Mercedes-Benzes gathering on Sunday, June 28th, at the Halcyon Live/Work/Play complex in Alpharetta, GA. The Rundown The And what a gathering it was, as exhibitors and spectators alike were anxious to get some relief from COVID-19 cabin fever, evidenced by the smiles on many faces. The cars were creatively staggered by co-event coordinator Eric Gilmer, so that the spectators were also purposely staggered to help promote social distancing. A hand-sanitizer station where free face masks could also be obtained was strategically located on the perimeter

-32- of the display area. And the Peachtree Section – MBCA tent, headed up by Membership Director and co-event coordinator Diana Quinn, was also equipped with hand sanitizer & disinfectant wipes. These in combination with everybody generally keeping a comfortable social distance helped create a low-stress assemblage of exhibitors, cars, and spectators, resulting in a very relaxed and low-key fun environment. The event started with staging the cars from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m., with spectator viewing from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. My personal guess is that there were some 300 spectators over the event’s three hours. Everybody was entertained with some music, chance for a door prize, and three very nice People’s Choice Awards, compliments of RBM of Alpharetta’s Mercedes-Benz Experience Center. Adding to the festivities were the restaurants & quaint shops within the Halcyon community, the new, first-of-its-kind RBM of Alpharetta Mercedes-Benz Experience Center within the Halcyon complex, and each of the exhibitors receiving a very nicely done Swag Bag. Congratulations to the three People’s Choice (crystal-with-standing-base) Award winners: • First Place – 1954 300SL Gull Wing exhibited by Dr. Robert Slayden and Mrs. Beryle Sladen. • Second Place – 1954 300SL Gull Wing exhibited by Mark and Sheila Richey. • Third Place – 1954 300b Sedan exhibited by Axel and Larry Vorpahl on behalf of the car’s owner Martin Richenhagen. These winners were part of an excellent display additionally comprised – in age order – of a black ’61 190SL (Axel and Larry Vorpahl), red ’66 230SL (Gerhard Mayrhofer), blue ’67 250SE/C Coupe (Roger and Fran McKissick), ivory ’70 (factory-spec restored) 280SE sedan (Axel and Larry Vorpahl), gray ’71 280SL (Axel and Larry Vorpahl), green ’78 450SL (James “Rusty” Duncan and Michelle Duncan), silver ’92 500E (Gary and Cheryl Edwards), dark gray ‘94 E500 (Eric and Jill Gilmer), silver ’95 E320 Cabriolet (Diana and Jim Quinn), ’99 SL600R (Gary and Cheryl Edwards), and a black 2005 Maybach (Otto and Maria Gogolin). All were excellently prepared and well presented. Hopefully, you saw the two announcements leading up to the event and were among the many spectators. However, it you did not attend, believe it or not you can still do so, as the event was videoed, including interviews with the exhibitors. Keep a close eye on Peachtree Section’s You Tube channel MBCA PeachTube . The video is presently being edited but should be posted on our You Tube channel soon. In the meantime, enjoy the pictures that accompany this article!
