James Hazlett May, 1987 PREFACE This dissertation is a business history of the Kansas City Live Stock Exchange, and a study of regulation in the American West. Historians generally understand the economic growth of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the business institutions created during that era, within the perspective of "progressive" history. According to that view, Americans shifted from a public policy of laissez faire economics to one of state regulation around the turn of the century. More recently, historians have questioned the nature of regulation in American society, and this study extends that discussion into the livestock industry of the American West. 1 This dissertation relied heavily upon the minutes of the Kansas City Live Stock Exchange. Other sources were also important, especially the minutes of the Chicago Live Stock Exchange, which made possible a comparison of the two exchanges. The 239 Year Timeline Of America’s Involvement in Military Conflict By Isaac Davis Region: USA Global Research, December 20, 2015 Theme: History, US NATO War Agenda Activist Post 18 December 2015 I should welcome almost any war, for I think this country needs one. – President Theodore Roosevelt The American public and the world have long since been warned of the dangers of allowing the military industrial complex to become such an integral part of our economic survival. The United States is the self-proclaimed angel of democracy in the world, but just as George Orwell warned, war is the health of the state, and in the language of newspeak, democracy is the term we use to hide the reality of the nature of our warfare state. In truth, the United States of America has been engaged in some kind of war during 218 out of the nation’s total 239 years of existence. Put another way, in the entire span of US history, this country has only experienced 21 years without conflict. For a sense of perspective on this sobering statistic, consider these4 facts about the history of US involvement in military conflict: Pick any year since 1776 and there is about a 91% chance that America was involved in some war during that calendar year. No U.S. president truly qualifies as a peacetime president. Instead, all U.S. presidents can technically be considered “war presidents.” The U.S. has never gone a decade without war. The only time the U.S. went five years without war (1935-40) was during the isolationist period of the Great Depression. -

The fifteenth edition of our workshop is being organized online on June 11, 2021, in conjunction with the 2021 Annual Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (NAACL-2021). The workshops in the TextGraphs series have published and promoted the synergy between the field of Graph Theory (GT) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). The mix between the two started small, with graph theoretical frameworks providing efficient and elegant solutions for NLP applications. Graph- based solutions initially focused on single-document part-of-speech tagging, word sense disambiguation, and semantic role labeling, and became progressively larger to include ontology learning and information extraction from large text collections. Nowadays, graph-based solutions also target on Web-scale applications such as information propagation in social networks, rumor proliferation, e-reputation, multiple entity detection, language dynamics learning, and future events prediction, to name a few. The target audience comprises researchers working on problems related to either Graph Theory or graph- based algorithms applied to Natural Language Processing, Social Media, and the Semantic Web. This year, we received 22 submissions and accepted 17 of them for oral presentation (12 long papers and 5 short papers). -

This study, funded by the National Park Service, is the first step in the long process of preserving the park's archeological heritage, a significant portion of which is being lost due to surface collecting and digging by "treasure hunters" at the archeological sites. This report includes a review of published references relevant to the archeology of the Buffalo National River and a summary of reports prepared by amateur and professional archeologists on the 254 known sites within the boundaries of the Buffalo National River on file with the Arkansas Archeological Survey.
