Tumbarumba tasted by Jancis Robinson A cool-climate, bushfire-burnt Australian wine region that deserves to be better known. Tumbarumba in the foothills of the Australian Alps in the south of New South Wales (see this map) suffered particularly badly from the recent awful Australian bushfires, which, in a roundabout way, resulted in my being able to discover its wines, as I will explain on Saturday. The Tumbarumba Times picture above shows just how many fire trucks were needed in the region at the beginning of this year. The local paper also published this picture of a Pinot Meunier in the Courabyra vineyard after the Dunns Road fires on New Year's Eve. The discovery of 100% Tumbarumba wines was well worth making. Previously I had come across Tumbarumba fruit only as an ingredient in some of Australia's most ambitious Chardonnays from the big companies: Penfolds Yattarna and Eileen Hardy. But below are tasting notes on 33 all- Tumbarumba wines made by some of the region's best producers. As can often be the way in Australia, many of these producers are based outside Tumbarumba, or the wines are the produce of local growers who send their fruit outside the region to be vinified. I asked Alex McKay, who was for long Hardys man in charge of Tumbarumba grape-sourcing and now makes Collector Wines, for details. These are the local wine-producing growers with details: • Coppabella – Made at First Creek Wines in Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley, with Samantha Connew as consulting winemaker. Jason Brown has reinvigorated the old Tralee vineyard to produce Coppabella wine. -

The Huntingfield area has a varied vegetation, including substantial areas ofEucalyptus amygdalina heathy woodland, heath, buttongrass moorland and E. amygdalina shrubbyforest, with smaller areas ofwetland, grassland and E. ovata shrubbyforest. Six floristic communities are described for the area. Two hundred and one native vascular plant taxa, 26 moss species and ten liverworts are known from the area, which is particularly rich in orchids, two ofwhich are rare in Tasmania. Four other plant species are known to be rare and/or unreserved inTasmania. Sixty-four exotic plantspecies have been observed in the area, most ofwhich do not threaten the native biodiversity. However, a group offire-adapted shrubs are potentially serious invaders. Management problems in the area include the maintenance ofopen areas, weed invasion, pathogen invasion, introduced animals, fire, mechanised recreation, drainage from houses and roads, rubbish dumping and the gathering offirewood, sand and plants. The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. Tumbarumba Tumbarumba SHIRE COUNCIL SHIRE COUNCIL Experience the Magic Experience the Magic KOSCIUSZKO NATIONAL PARK Tumbarumba Shire’s link to the northern end of Kosciusko National Park is the Elliott Way, and the Alpine Way at Khancoban is the gateway to the southern alpine area. Except in winter, the Khancoban to Cabramurra road also provides access. The Geehi Walls track provides a good day walk from the Geehi camping area, which is located 34 kms south of Khancoban on the Alpine Way. The huts at Geehi were damaged in the fires of 2003, but have since been restored to their original condition. There are a number of short and longer walking tracks in the park. For more information contact your nearest National Parks and Wildlife Visitor Centre or the Khancoban Information Centre. Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Addition to the Cytology of Monocots from District Kangra (Hp)
ADDITION TO THE CYTOLOGY OF MONOCOTS FROM DISTRICT KANGRA (H.P.) OF WESTERN HIMALAYAS, INDIA Harpreet Kaur1, Santosh Kumari2, and Raghbir Chand Gupta2 1Department of Botany, Guru Nanak College for Girls, Sri Muktsar Sahib ( India) 2Department of Botany, Punjabi University, Patiala (India) ABSTRACT At present, the meiotic/varied chromosome numbers are reported for 27 species (33 cytotypes) belonging to 24 genera of 5 families of Monocots from district Kangra of Himachal Pradesh in the Western Himalayas. On the basis of the world-wide data, the chromosome counts for the two taxa as Lolium remotum var. aristatum (n=7) and Cymbopogon clandestinus (n=10) have been cytologically worked out for the first time. Seventeen species as Commelina hasskarlii (n=11, 30), C. kurzii (n=30), Murdannia nudiflora (n=12), Cyperus flavidus (n=32), Acrachne racemosa (n=6), Andropogon tristris (n=20), Brachiaria remota (n=16), Chrysopogon serrulatus (n=20), Digitaria granularis (n=36), Isachne albens (n=5), Microstegium vagans (n=20), Panicum antidotale (n=16), Pennisetum lanatum (n=21), P. purpureum (n=21), Pogonatherum crinitum (n=14), Setaria barbata (n=16) and S. homonyma (n=16) make new chromosome counts in the form of additional cytotypes on the world-wide basis. Also, the presence of B-chromosomes in the hexaploid cytotype (n=21+1B) of Avena fatua var. fatua are shown for the first time. To supplement the Indian data, chromosome counts for the ten species as Canna discolor (n=9), Briza minor (n=5), Bromus catharticus (n=21), Echinochloa crus-pavonis (n=27), Paspalum distichum (2n=50), Pennisetum lanatum (n=18), P. -
