    TOUR TO GEORGIA 10 DAYS /9 NIGHTS Day 1: Arrival at Tbilisi Meeting at the airport, transfer to the hotel. Free time. Overnight at the hotel in Tbilisi. Day 2. Tbilisi (B/L/-) Breakfast at the hotel. Tour of the historic part of the city, which begins with a visit to the Metekhi Temple, which is one of the most famous monuments in Tbilisi. This temple was honored in the 13th century, on the very edge of the stony shore of the Kura and the former fortress and residence of the Georgian kings. The first Georgian martyr, Queen Shushanika Ranskaya, was buried under the arches of the Metekhi temple. Inspection of the Tbilisi sulfur baths, which are built in the style of classical oriental architecture. These are low, squat buildings, covered with semicircular domes with large glass openings in the center, serving as windows that illuminate the interior, as the baths themselves are below ground level. In the old days, people here not only bathed, but also talked, lingering until dawn, and the city matchmakers arranged special days on special days. In the baths gave dinner parties, concluded trade deals. Walk on the square Maidan, which was the main shopping area of the city and along small streets known under the common name "Sharden". Narikala Fortress, which is the most ancient monument, a kind of "soul and heart of the city." The date of construction of the fortress is called approximately IV century AD, so it stands from the foundation of the city itself. Later, the fortress was expanded and completed several times.

    Journal of Education; ISSN 2298-0245 Place of myth in traditional society Ketevan SIKHARULIDZE* Abstract The article deals with the place and function of mythology in traditional society. It is mentioned that mythology has defined the structure and lifestyle of society together with religion. The main universal themes are outlined based on which it became possible to classify myths, i.e. group them by the content. A description of these groups is provided and it is mentioned that a great role in the formation of mythological thinking was played by advancement of farming in agricultural activities. On its part, mythology played a significant role in the development of culture in general and in literature in particular. On her father’s side, she was related to St. George, on her mother’s – to the Patriarch of Jerusalem. When Nina was a young girl, her father became a monk, and her mother was appointed a deaconess . Nina was raised by an old Christian woman, Nianphora, who treated the girl as her own daughter. From Nianphora Nina heard a story about Christ’s tunic . She learned (узнала) that the resting place of the tunic was Iberia, a far- away land in the Caucasus. Iberia was an old name for Georgia. Nina felt sorry for the people who lived in darkness there and did not know the love of the true God. She wanted to preach the Gospel in that distant country. Nina prayed to the Lord to show her the way. The Holy Virgin heard the girl’s prayers and came to her in a vision. The Theotokos gave Nina a grapevine cross and said, “Go to Iberia and tell the people there about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” With the Patriarch’s blessing, Nina started her long and dangerous journey to the Kingdom of Iberia. Finally, she reached Mtskheta, the capital. There, Nina began to preach the word of Christ. Many people listened to her and accepted the Christian faith. They also came to Nina when they were sick, because she had the gift of healing. Saint Nina helped everybody, and the people loved her.

    MAGDALENA STO J AN O V A THE CEMETERY CHURCH OF ROŽEN MONASTERY Rožen Monastery is situated on a hill between Rožen and Melnik amidst magnificent mountain scenery. Isolated from busy centres and difficult of access—though rich in natural beauty—this position has proved exceptionally favourable for the monastery’s survival up to the present day. Its architecture indicates a relatively early construction date, around the twelfth or thirteenth century1, but the first written source for Rožen Monastery dates only from 15512. Having studied a great number of Greek documents, the architect Alkiviadis Prepis3 has established that the monastery was originally a de­ pendency with a church dedicated to St George, which was built in the thir­ teenth century by the Byzantine soldier George Contostephanus Calameas and his wife. According to surviving data from the period up until 1351, in 1309 they presented the dependency to the Georgian Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos, and continued to enrich it4. After this area was conquered by 1. On the basis of the construction and the plan, Assen Vassiliev dates the church to about the twelfth century : A Vassiliev, Ktitorski portreti, Sofia 1960, p. 88. George Trajchev opines that the monastery was built in 1217 (Maitastirite v Makedonija, Sofia 1933, pp. 192- 3).     The Churches of Mtskheta: Acceptance and Rejection of Foreign Influence in the Church Architecture of Eastern Georgia Samantha Johnson Senior Art History Thesis December 14, 2017 The small town of Mtskheta, located near Tbilisi, the capital of the Republic of Georgia, is the seat of the Georgian Orthodox Church and is the heart of Christianity in the country. This town, one of the oldest in the nation, was once the capital and has been a key player throughout Georgia’s tumultuous history, witnessing not only the nation’s conversion to Christianity, but also the devastation of foreign invasions. It also contains three churches that are national symbols and represent the two major waves of church building in the seventh and eleventh centuries. Georgia is, above all, a Christian nation and religion is central to its national identity. This paper examines the interaction between incoming foreign cultures and deeply-rooted local traditions that have shaped art and architecture in Transcaucasia.1 Nestled among the Caucasus Mountains, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, present-day Georgia contains fewer than four million people and has its own unique alphabet and language as well as a long, complex history. In fact, historians cannot agree on how Georgia got its English exonym, because in the native tongue, kartulad, the country is called Sakartvelo, or “land of the karvelians.”2 They know that the name “Sakartvelo” first appeared in texts around 800 AD as another name for the eastern kingdom of Kartli in Transcaucasia. The process began in the fall of 2011, when the Language and Cross-Culture component of Peace Corps Georgia launched a Georgian Country and Culture Guide project and PCVs from different regions volunteered to do research and gather information on their specific areas. After the initial information was gathered, the arduous process of merging the researched information began. Extensive editing followed and this is the end result.
