Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

Analisis kebutuhan yang dengan penyebaran angket kepada 53 mahasiswa Biologi Universitas Negeri Malang yang telah menempuh matakuliah Keanekaragaman Tumbuhan ditemukan kesulitan belajar yang mereka alami yaitu sulit mencari referensi atau bahan dalam melakukan identifikasi tumbuhan, gambar yang terdapat dihandout kurang jelas, dan kesulitan dalam melakukan identifikasi. Solusi untuk mengatasi kesulitan belajar yang mereka alami yaitu memberikan media lain seperti buku ataupun bacaan tambahan yang dapat menuntun mahasiswa dalam proses identifikasi. 321 THE NATIVE COASTAL PLANTS OF OIAHU, HAWAIII Raymond S. Tabata Sea Grant Marine Advisory program University of Hawaii at Manoa Honolulu, Hawaii 96822 INTRODUCTION The most vulnerable elements in the coastline vegetation are the endemic strand elements, which are narrow in range ..•and the endemic elements of the native dry forests, which may have extended to the coast in the leeward areas.... (Richmond & Mueller Dombois 1972). The demise of the Hawaiian endemic flora has been a concern for many decades. Degener (1932 et seq.), Egler (1947), and Richmond and Mueller-Dombois (1972) h~ve documented the gradual loss of native plants on O'ahu due to the impacts of agriculture, development, and introduced plants. In recent years, with in creased interest in Hawaiiana, the native Hawaiian environment, and coastal zone management, there has been increasing concern for native coastal plants. This is shown by several, recent pUblications written for general audiences on this subject: Arrigoni (1977, 1978), Merlin (1977), and Tabata (1979). Also, a 20-minute slide/tape program "Ni Mea Uiu Ma Kahakai a Hawaili" was produced by Kimura and Nagata (1979). For O'ahu,particular1y, there is now new information on the status of native coastal plants: Richmond and Mue1ler-Dombois (1972) on O'ahu coastline ecosystems; Fosberg and Herbst (1975) on rare and endangered plants; Herbst (1976), ErS Corp. (1977), and Miura and Sato (1978) on the Barber's Point Deep-Draft Harbor site; Stemmermann (1977) on Hawaiian sandalwoods (Santalum spp.); Degener and Degener (1978) on the lohai (Sesbania spp.); Elliott and Hall (1978) on the Kahuku area; Char and Balakrishnan (1979) on the 'Ewa ·Plains flora; Gardner (1979) on nehe (LiEochaeta spp.); and Kimura and Nagata (19frO) on endangered coastal envi ronments. -

This is a learning tool, & a continuation of an idea of my friend & former employer, Jock Ingels, LaFayette Home Nursery, who hoped to present more available information about a plant in one easily accessible place, instead of scattered though numerous sources. This is a work in perpetual progress, a personal learning tool, full uv misstakes, & written as a personal means instead of a public end. Redundant, repetitive, superfluous, & contradictory information is present. It is being consolidated. CYPERACEAE Sauergrasgewächse SEDGES, aka BIESIES, SEGGEN Formally described in 1789 by De Jussieu. The family name is derived from the genus name Cyperus, from the Greek kupeiros, meaning sedge. Many species are grass-like, being tufted, with long, thin, narrow leaves, jointed stems, & branched inflorescence of small flowers, & are horticulturally lumped with grasses as graminoids. Archer (2005) suggests the term graminoid be used for true grasses, & cyperoid be used for sedges. (If physical anthropologists have hominoids & hominids, why don’t we have graminoids & graminids?) There are approximately 104 genera, 4 subfamilies, 14 tribes, & about 5000 species worldwide, with 27 genera & 843 species in North America (Ball et al 2002). -

ROCK Consulting Botanist, Board of Agriculture and Forestry HONOLULU: HAWAIIAN GAZETTE CO., LTD. 1913 ALPHABETICAL LIST OF HAWAIIAN NAMES OF PLANTS. The following list of Hawaiian plant-names has been compiled from various sources. Hillebrand in his valuable Flora of the Hawaiian Islands has given many Hawaiian names, especially of the more common species; these are incorporated in this list with a few corrections. Nearly all Hawaiian plant-names found in this list and not in Hillebrand's Flora were secured from Mr. Francis Gay of the Island of Kauai, an old resident in this Terri tory and well acquainted with its plants from a layman's stand point. It was the writer's privilege to camp with Mr. Gay in the mountains of Kauai collecting botanical material; for almost every species he could give the native name, which he had se cured in the early days from old and reliable natives. Mr. Gay had made spatter prints of many of the native plants in a large record book with their names and uses, as well as their symbolic meaning when occurring in mele (songs) or olioli (chants), at tached to them. For all this information the writer is indebted mainly to Mr. Francis Gay and also to Mr. Augustus F. Knudsen of the same Island. The writer also secured Hawaiian names from old na tives and Kahunas (priests) in the various islands of the group. -
