Prior Winter Olympic Nations that No Longer Exist CZECHOSLOVAKIA (TCH) Olympic History: Athletes from what later became Czechoslovakia first competed at the 1900 Olympics, representing Bohemia. Bohemian athletes also competed in 1906, 1908, and 1912. In 1920, Czechoslovakia sent its first true Olympic team to Antwerp. From 1920-1992 the only Olympic Games not attended by Czechoslovakia, including the Olympic Winter Games, was the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Czechoslovakia excelled in many different sports at the Olympics. The country’s most noteworthy athletes were distance runner Emil Zátopek and female gymnast Věra Čáslavská. Czechoslovakia peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on 1 January 1993. Czechoslovakia competed at 16 Olympic Winter Games, as follows: 1924, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, and 1992. Czechoslovakia also competed in ice hockey at the 1920 Olympic Games. Andrée Grau: Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: The Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: The Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin Andrée Grau Roehampton University, [email protected] Abstract In this paper, I address a number of topics relevant to anthropology generally and to the anthropology of dance specifically. I consider issues of classification and taxonomies; of interculturalism and transnationalism; of representation, exoticisation and internalised racism. I examine dance, hierarchies and discrimination, and discuss boundaries between dance and non-dance. For example, dance scholars, with a few exceptions, rarely write about figure skating, although it is cognate to Western theatre dance genres, especially ballet. Figure skating is sport, even in its ice dancing incarnation, whilst dance is art even in its ballet competition incarnations. I use as a case study the Russian skaters Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, who choreographed an ‘Australian Aboriginal Dance’ for their original routine for the 2010 European skating championships and Olympics. This offended Aboriginal elders who made a complaint to the Russian ambassador. I examine the controversy around the routine, how it was reported in the press and how the audience responded in Internet forums, focusing especially on the way Australian Aborigines con- tinue to be portrayed as stone age in popular media. Olympic champions lead 2019 World Hall of Fame COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, USA (April 22, 2019) – Olympic champions Natalya Bestemyanova & Andrey Bukin and the late Ondrej Nepela lead the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame Class of 2019, nominating chair Lawrence Mondschein announced today. They are joined by two-time World champion Gabriele Seyfert and renowned coach Yelena Tchaikovskaya. “This year's class includes Olympic and World champions and a highly decorated coach,” Mondschein said. “Each has been recognized and honored within their respective countries and admired by figure skating enthusiasts around the world for their significant contributions to our sport." The Soviet team of Natalya Bestemyanova & Andrey Bukin dominated ice dance from 1985 to 1988. In the run-up to their 1988 Olympic gold medal, they won four-consecutive World titles and earned four- consecutive European Championships. In total, Bestemyanova & Bukin earned two Olympic medals, eight World medals and seven European medals. Dramatic, innovative and theatrical, their avant-garde programs introduced a new and technically sound style of ice dance. Ondrej Nepela of the former Czechoslovakia was the 1972 Olympic champion, a three-time World champion (1971-73) and five-time European champion (1969-73). He died in Mannheim, Germany, in 1989 at the age of 38. In 1993, the Slovak Figure Skating Association established the Ondrej Nepela Memorial (now Trophy) to honor the nine-time winner of the Czechoslovak Championships. Nepela was named the Slovak Athlete of the 20th Century by the Slovak Republic in 2000. Two-time World champion (1969-70) and 1968 Olympic silver medalist Gabriele Seyfert is the first woman to land a clean triple loop jump in competition. -
