It is the USS Scorpion (God rest the souls of all those on board). It shows an R-5 division radiological controls monitor (not me) tending a discharge of radioactive reac- tor coolant water to the holding tanks on Orion. That’s what I did while on board. That hose could only take tem- peratures up to a certain level and then the watch would stop the discharge until it cooled. The picture was taken from the main deck of Orion. Notice the wooden sail strapped to the rail. I guess it was there in the event we ever lost power at sea. They could rig up an old-school sail and get somewhere. I never saw it used as long as I was on her. This was taken sometime in 1968 I think, maybe a year earlier. It’s a damn shame what’s become of home for a cou- ple of years of my life.

    NEWS RELEASE (05/21/2013) NEW INSTALLATION RETURNS HOME TO FORT TRUMBULL For many people, the work that they perform is intangible. For others, the work is tangible-a book written, a song composed, a building designed. In April of this year, a retired engineer from the Naval Underwater Systems Center/Newport Division (formerly the Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory in New London, CT) successfully solved many logistical problems to bring to Fort Trumbull State Park in New London, CT, a Transducer-an underwater speaker and receiver- which he and others had utilized during the Cold War Era. Because this very large, tangible artifact had played an important role in America’s success in the Cold War, he was determined to return it to its original location. This Odyssey began in September, 2011. Earlier, when the Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory had moved from New London to Newport, R.I., the Transducer had been re-located to a parking lot at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport. There it languished for many years. In 2011, Mr. Justin Daubar received a call from a friend saying that the transducer, which had been taking up a parking space, had to be removed. He was asked if he and others who had worked on this project were interested in saving it. Mr. Daubar, immediately indicating that he was interested, swung into action. For the next 14 months, he made innumerable phone calls, sent measureless e-mails, and wrote myriad letters to various people in the Naval Undersea Warfare Center/Division Newport, the State of Ct, and the Navy History and Heritage Command.

    USS Tigrone AGSS 419 Now I have to assure you that this is an absolute, positive no-shitter... I know because I was there. I may have told some of you this story before, but as I'm now so old I can't remember which one of you have heard it and due to the fact that you're now all so old you probably don't remember it anyway, I'm going to tell all of you. The first boat I served on was the USS Tigrone AGSS-419. My original orders were for the USS Cobbler SS-344, but she was up North freezing the water in her bilges when I received my orders, so I was sent TAD to the Tigrone who was scheduled to make one of her runs to the Azores. The Tigrone was actually operated by USN/USL (US Navy/Underwater Sound Lab) and carried an experimental active sonar system called BRASS. We had both BRASS I and BRASS II and if you've ever seen a picture of the Tigrone during this time in her long and useful service life, she was a weird looking boat. I'll try to attach a copy at the end of this email. The Tigrone was the only boat I was ever aboard which made no big deal about going to test depth. When we operated that monster sonar we always went directly to test depth and following the diving alarm, the diving officer would be given that depth to head for and if the various compartments got rigged for deep by the time we got there, good enough, if not, oh well, they would as soon as they could get to it! I cannot tell you how many watts the BRASS was capable of transmitting into the water, but suffice it to say it far exceeded anything else in anybody's Navy at that time and maybe even today's Navies for all I know.
