Indiana Forest Action Plan 2020 UPDATE Indiana Forest Action Plan 2020 UPDATE Strategic Goals: • Conserve, manage and protect existing forests, especially large forest patches, with increased emphasis on oak regeneration • Restore, expand and connect forests, especially in riparian areas • Connect people to forests, especially children and land-use decision makers, and coordinate education training and technical assistance • Maintain and expand markets for Indiana hardwoods, with special focus on secondary processors and promoting the environmental benefits of wood products to local communities and school groups • Significantly increase the size of Indiana’s urban forest canopy by developing community assistance programs and tools Indiana Forest Action Plan | 2020 Update 1 Executive Summary The 2020 Indiana Forest Action Plan is an update to the 2010 Indiana Statewide Forest Assessment and Indiana Statewide Forest Strategy. The purpose remains unchanged: to address the sustainability of Indiana’s statewide forests and develop a plan to ensure a desired future condition for forests in the state. This plan is distinct from the Indiana DNR Division of Forestry Strategic Direction 2020-2025. Indiana forest stakeholders participating in developing this Forest Action Plan maintained the broader perspective of all forest lands, public and private, and based recommendations on the roughly 5 million acres of forest in Indiana throughout the document. ONE 1985 EDITION This yearly report to the members is the method by which the history of the Indianapolis Hiking Club is chronicled and kept up to dat e . The club enjoyed an exciting and interesting schedule of events last year, as it complet ed the 28th year of exis t ence, following the purpose for which it was organized; "To encourage a love of nature, through the promotion of outdoor recreation in the form of hikes and outings, and to sponsor other activities incidental to the foregoing" . Any organization needs the participation of individual members to be s trong and vibrant, and the Indianapolis Hiking Club excels in this r espect. The active and enthusiastic support of a l arge percent of the membership has helped to make t he club the outstanding outdoor recreation group in Indiana. The total paid up membership at the end of the year wa s 368. During the year the c lub sponsored 198 hikes , and 3 overnight outings, ·the summer picnic, the Christmas Party, and a backpack. There were 4 General Assembly mee tings, which are the bus iness and soci al genera l meetings of the members. Va rious items of interes t are presented by the o fficer s ~ ~nc luding the current financ i al report, and the members a re informed of recent decisions )Y-the board of directors. The September General Assembly is also the meeting for the election of officers for the new year. -

Licking Creek Woods
LICKING CREEK WOODS The vegetation at this site in the southwestern-most portion of Franklin County has been significantly influenced by the limestone substrate of the forested hills, creek banks and rocky outcrops in this area. Though aerial observations seem to indicate nothing out of the ordinary in this corner of the county, the incredibly rich herbaceous vegetation found at this site makes it one of the top sites for the conservation of biological diversity in the County. This site contains one animal species of concern and a total of 17 plant species of concern, some species that do not occur anywhere else in the state. These species inhabit a variety of habitat types such as a floodplain forest, moist calcareous shale woods, limestone cliffs, mixed deciduous “rich” woods, mesic upland forest, etc. In addition to the plant species of special concern, this site also supports a number of species that are more typical of the Ohio River watershed in Pennsylvania and are therefore noteworthy for their occurrence in Franklin County. These species include Short’s Aster (Aster shortii), Dwarf Larkspur (Delphinium tricorne), Twinleaf (Jeffersonia diphylla), Miami-mist (Phacelia purshii), and Toadshade (Trillium sessile). In a study of plant diversity, a total of 253 plant species in 69 families were found within an area of about four hectares at this site. This entire area represents one of the most diverse plant areas in the state (Klotz and Walck, 1993). Several plant species of concern are found primarily on the rich, forested, calcareous slopes at this site. These include several populations of Jeweled Shooting-star (Dodecatheon meadia), a G5, S2 Pennsylvania-Threatened plant species of concern, a fair-quality population of Limestone Petunia (Ruellia strepens), a G4G5, S2 PA-Threatened plant species of concern, and a small population of Green and Gold (Chrysogonum virginianum), a G5, S1 PA-Endangered plant species of concern. -

Mississippi Natural Heritage Program Special Plants - Tracking List -2018
MISSISSIPPI NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM SPECIAL PLANTS - TRACKING LIST -2018- Approximately 3300 species of vascular plants (fern, gymnosperms, and angiosperms), and numerous non-vascular plants may be found in Mississippi. Many of these are quite common. Some, however, are known or suspected to occur in low numbers; these are designated as species of special concern, and are listed below. There are 495 special concern plants, which include 4 non- vascular plants, 28 ferns and fern allies, 4 gymnosperms, and 459 angiosperms 244 dicots and 215 monocots. An additional 100 species are designated “watch” status (see “Special Plants - Watch List”) with the potential of becoming species of special concern and include 2 fern and fern allies, 54 dicots and 44 monocots. This list is designated for the primary purposes of : 1) in environmental assessments, “flagging” of sensitive species that may be negatively affected by proposed actions; 2) determination of protection priorities of natural areas that contain such species; and 3) determination of priorities of inventory and protection for these plants, including the proposed listing of species for federal protection. The Distribution of the Smoky Shrew, Sorex fumeus, and the Pygmy Shrew, Microsorex hoyi, in Indiana with Notes on the Distribution of Other Shrews Wynn W. Cudmore and John O. Whitaker, Jr. Department of Life Sciences, Indiana State University Terre Haute, Indiana 47809 Introduction The presence of the Smoky Shrew, Sorex fumeus, and the Pygmy Shrew, Micro- sorex hoyi, in Indiana was first documented by Caldwell, Smith and Whitaker (1982). The presence in Indiana of these species was suspected based on the continuous nature of the physiographic ecological region from northern Kentucky to southern Indiana. Microsorex occurs from Alaska through Canada and into the United States as far south as Colorado and Georgia (Diersing 1980). Sorex fumeus occurs from southeastern Canada through the northeastern United States to the mountains of Georgia and west across two-thirds of Kentucky (Hall 1981, Caldwell and Bryan 1982). The ranges of the two species overlap extensively in the eastern United States. The present study was undertaken to establish the distribution of S. fumeus and M. hoyi in Indiana and to gain additional information on the distribution of associated shrew species. Methods and Materials A total of 35 localities in 21 southern Indiana counties was trapped to indicate the presence or absence of S. fumeus and M. hoyi. Pitfall traps (1000 ml plastic disposable beakers with approximately one inch of water) were sunk along natural obstructions (i.e., logs, rock faces, etc.) in suitable habitat. An average of 19 cans (range 6-40) was used per site, left in place an average of 31 days (range 16-49) and checked periodically. -

Los helechos son indicadores de calidad de los hábitats y su falta de relaciones coevolutivas con vectores bióticos, así como su monofilia y estabilidad morfológica los hacen apropiados para establecer patrones biogeográficos. Nuestro objetivo fue aplicar análisis de trazos y parsimonia de endemismos a la flora de helechos de las Sierras de Córdoba (78 taxones) para contribuir a la elaboración del Atlas Biogeográfico centro-argentino. El patrón distribucional encontrado muestra las estrechas relaciones de estos helechos con las floras de las Sierras Subandinas; los Andes del Norte, los sistemas serranos de Buenos Aires y el sur de Brasil, correspondiéndose con el Arco Peripampásico Serrano. -

PREFACE All doors were opened to start this travel, beginning for the many magical pristine forest of Ecuador, Sierra de Juárez Oaxaca and los Tuxtlas in Veracruz, some of the most biodiverse zones in the planet, were I had the honor to put my feet, contemplate their beauty and perfection and work in their mystical forest. It was a dream into reality! The collaboration with the German counterpart started at the beginning of my academic career and I never imagine that this will be continued to bring this research that summarizes the efforts of many researchers that worked hardly in the overwhelming and incredible biodiverse tropics.
