Congratulations t o all who made the Honor Roll. There were many others who came close. The club has many active and valuable members who for one reason or another are unable to do all the hiking they might like to. Please come out to the ac:i vities as often as you can - all the members are important to the club.

HIKE LEADERS!! They need to be recognized and appreciated . They are the backbone of the club. They not only lead us on hikes, but they spend much time in scouting the trails looking for variations and exploring for new areas to hike. The club wants to esp~cially recognize and thank those leaders who led 5 or more hikes during the year.

These leaders led for about 160 hikes out of a total of 198 hikes during the year. Some times there are 2 leaders on a hike, so therefore the total number of leaders will add up to more than the total number of hikes.

THE SUMMER PICNIC On a nice summer Saturday late in July, the members found themselves at the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary for a day of good hiking and good eating. This beautiful 600 acre park owned by the Indiana Audubon Society was indeed the proper setting . About 23 hikers came earl y for -.._ the morning hike, and the rest arrived around noon for the pitch-in picnic and general good times . We ate in the Markle Barn overlooking one of the l akes. THE ANNUAL CHRIS~S PARTY Again we met at the Covenant Presbyterian Church on a Saturday earl y in December to enjoy the companionship of good friends in cel ebration of the Holiday season. What a huge success 'las the pitch-in dinner, where many of the "Che~s" of the club vied with one another to see who could produce the most delectable creation. What a t r eat ! M.any indulged a little too much - but that is the way with Christmas parties. GERRY GRAY and JERRY HAMMONS entertained us with their songs of the season - playing the dulcimer, the auto harp, and the guitar. And we joined in singing some of the carols. Santa Claus showed up again, and passed out apples along with a lot of hearty HO, HO, HO's.

WORK ON THE KNOBSTONE TRAIL On a warm day in June, members of the club worked on trail maintenance on the Knobstone Trail. Under the direction of Chris Donovan of the Department of Nat~ral Resources, the following people headed by Al Drehobl l abored in the area of Elk Creek - Fred Eckstein, Bill Larrison, Hugh Weber, Jill Harmon, Henry McFall, Pat Fox, Shirley Plunkett, Tom Palmberg, Louise Crandall, Al Crandall, Charles Brunette, and Bill Isham. The Knobstone Trail is of particular interest to the club, as the club has worked on it several times in recent years, and many have hiked the various sections of it.

THE OVERNIGHT OUl'INGS

The club has several overnight outings each year. There are interesting programs at each of these events, in addition to all the hiking. In the informal atmosphere of a Lodge or Camp, it is pleasant to visit with old friends and make new ones during the weekend.

WINTER OVERNIGHT AT HUESTON WOODS STATE PARK This beautiful park just north of Oxford, Ohio, was the scene of the February overnight. About 60 people enjoyed the hiking and activities. Arriving just 3 dAys after a major snow storm, we found the parking lot almost covered. But the snow only added to the excitement of the weekend. We got in about 12 miles of hiking, following the roads which --. had been cleared. For the evening program we listened to Mike Wright of the Park Service as he entertained us with some pets - "IARRY" the owl, "TRUMPER" the skunk, and a red tail hawk. His presentation was both humorous and enjoyable. Sam Lloyd followed by showing some slides - some really good ones of members at various activities of the club. GNAW BONE CAMP ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND This was the 15th annua 1 sojourn to Gnaw Bone, and many look forwa rd each y~ar to "returning home•. The first order of business was to find sleeping quarters and a place to dump the aleeping bags, then we are f ree for whatever is in store. About 70 people plus a number of day hikers enjoyed the weekend. We started out with the usual Saturday afternoon hike which helps the newcomers get oriented. After the evening meal, we were entertained at the outdoor amphitheater by Gerry Gray and Jerry Hammons. The evening was warm and pleasant and the couple had the audience. in the palm of their hands. Gerry formed a kitchen band with enthusiastic and loud help from various people in the audience. It was a wonderful evening of songs, and we ended by all singing the Club Song. Sunday morning, after the worship service, John Williams led the group on some of the trails of the Camp, with Bill Larrison taking a group back on a shortcut trail. Sunday afternoon at Gnaw Bone as always is set aside for leisure - boating, swimming, horseshoes, lawn bowling, vo lley ball, perhaps reading a good book, or just plain loafing. We gathered at the "GNAW BONE PALACE" Sunday evening to watch as the GNAW BONE PLAYERS presented the "BACK WOODS REVUE'' What a bunch of hams! Featured wer e such acts as "THE CAN'T CAN'T DANCERS" - the BLISTER SISTERS fresh from the Gong Show - The GNAW BONE HONKERS featuring DORA the mouse. Also the. SIMPLE -PHONIC ORCHESTRA - and MARIE WEBSTER in a couple of hilarious skits. The entertainment ended with "AN ODE TO MISS LIBERTY'' - a patriotic salute to a "GRAND OLD IADY" We had an inspiring Memorial Service Monday morning as in the distance we heard the sound of taps as played by Allen Pekar. Then came the Monday morning hike. After the noon meal, many gathered to talk and reminisce before heading for the mundane world back home.

NATURAL BRIDGE STATE PARK - IABOR DAY WEEKEND This 3 day weekend outing was held in eastern Kentucky at beautiful Natural Bridge State Park. About 50 people were there to take the trails through the rhododendron leading to the bridge. Breathtaking views were everywhere from look out points on the upper rim. All 3 days were spent hiking in various sections of the park. The staff at the park had provided us with a private meeting room for our use, where we had a church service on Sunday morning. Our hospitality hour Sunday evening was in this room before eating dinner . Below Hemlock Lodge, which is situated on a ledge _part way up a steep hill, is the lake and swimming pool. We gpt plenty of exercise walking up and down the connecting pathway. In the lake was Hoedown Island, where the square dancers of the region congregate. Many enjoyed watching the dancing both nights. After breakfast on Monday, and the morning hike, we all felt it was time to take leave of this spectacular area of Kentucky. It had been a most enjoyable weekend .

The activities for the past year are listed on the following pages, including the hikes and outings, and overnights. Following that is a detailed listing of the mileages of all the members (including children who hiked).
