He’s “compelling in his 16 thoroughness” but can be overwhelming. “One day I’d say I can’t take any more of this, and the next day 17 read 100 pages. It’s a bit like Brexit coverage,” he tells me. -

This was the first work written by McEwan that consist eight short stories with estranged and perplexed themes. Ian McEwan received a mixed reaction of criticism as well as appreciation by the readers. The stories are usually of fifteen to twenty pages with the following titles – “Solid Geometry”, “Homemade”, “Last Day of Summer”, “Cocker at the Theatre”, “Butterflies”, “Conversation with a Cupboard Man” and “First Love, Last Rites” and “Disguise”. The author has also included a short story named after the title of his collection. There are numerous aspects in the stories where either the narrators or the protagonists talk about their suppressed emotions or fulfilled desires without being concerned about the societal norms and environment around them. Author biography Ian Russell McEwan CBE FRSA FRSL (born 21 June 1948) is an English novelist and screenwriter. Born in Aldershot, Hampshire to David McEwan and Rose Lilian Violet (née Moore). McEwan spent much of his childhood in east Asia (including Singapore), Germany, and north Africa (including Libya), where his father was posted. His family returned to England when he was 12. He was educated at Woolverstone Hall School; the University of Sussex, where he received a degree in English literature in 1970; and the University of East Anglia, where he undertook a master's degree in literature (with the option to submit creative writing instead of a critical dissertation). McEwan began his career writing sparse, Gothic short stories. The Cement Garden (1978) and The Comfort of Strangers (1981), his first two novels, earned him the nickname "Ian Macabre". These were followed by three novels of some success in the 1980s and early 1990s. His novel Enduring Love (1997) was adapted into an eponymous film. He won the Man Booker Prize with Amsterdam (1998). His following novel, Atonement (2001), garnered acclaim and was adapted into an Oscar-winning film starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. -

Even if we could keep the machines in a subservient position, for instance by turning off the power at strategic moments, we should, as a species, feel greatly humbled. Alan Turing, “Can Digital Computers Think?” (1951) In April 1980, the BBC broadcast The Imitation Game, a television play written by Ian McEwan and directed by Richard Eyre. Set in Britain during World War II, it tells the story of Cathy Raine, a fictitious member of the Auxiliary Territorial Service, who is transferred to work as a waitress at Bletchley Park where she has a short and ill-fated affair with the Turing-like mathematician John Turner. Commenting on his television play, McEwan admitted that his initial intention had been to write a play about Alan Turing, only to change his mind in favour of foregrounding what would now be called a critical feminist reading of life at Bletchley Park (“Introduction” 15). Over the years, the focus on individuals who are facing the “pressures of their time” (Head 1) has become the hallmark of McEwan’s writing. In agreement with this point, Lynn Wells notes that: [s]ince the late 1980s, McEwan has been producing fiction that comments on the major dilemmas of our time, reflecting the injustice of historical and contemporary political systems and highlighting the tendency of individuals to choose self-interest over care for others. -

5 RICHARD BROWN Cold War Fictions The publication of Sweet Tooth in 2012 confirmed McEwan’s interest in the Cold War themes of global politics and the individual experience, extending them into the 1970s politics of the cultural sphere and forward into the second decade of the new millennium. Its story of woman MI5 agent Serena Frome, assigned to the secret literary project of supporting a writer, Tom Haley, who is not entirely unlike the early McEwan himself, allowed him to perform a self-conscious fictional return to the world of the short stories that had brought his first success, and also to his television play The Imitation Game of 1980, in which secret political history and espionage came centre stage and which also had a female protagonist, Cathy Raine. Sweet Tooth further invited a re-evaluation of The Innocent (1990) and Black Dogs (1992), the two novels which were produced at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 when the Cold War era ended, or at least took on a different shape. In doing so, Sweet Tooth not only reframed the earlier McEwan as a writer of the Cold War decades from the birth of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (1949) to the Fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), but also highlighted his use of certain typical features of that political era as metaphors for an ongoing exploration of human and sexual relations, the nature of fictional representation and the relationship between the writer and the reader in the new century. To contextualize these concerns in McEwan’s career, it is helpful to reconsider the introductions which he wrote to The Imitation Game volume (1981)andA Move Abroad (1989). -

Müller* The body within the body: Ian McEwan’s creation of a new world in Nutshell https://doi.org/10.1515/fns-2018-0029 Abstract: This article looks at Ian McEwan’s latest novel, Nutshell, as a great innovative contribution to narrative art. As far as its basic plot is concerned, it looks like crime fiction with Shakespearean resonances, but the choice of an unborn child as narrator and the consistent perspective from within the body of a heavily pregnant woman result in the disclosure and exploration of an entirely new world. Aspects investigated are the novel’s narrative situation, its relation to Shakespeare’s Hamlet as a reference text, the use of quotations and allusions and the representation of bodily processes and the relation between the I-narrator and the author. The ethical substance of the work is shown to be generated by its specific narrative form. In this respect his latest novel, Nutshell (2016), is a special case since in this text the narrator is a foetus in the last stages before birth. This may not be looked at as an innovation, because unusual narrators are not rare in fiction. There are even cases like Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy or Carlos Fuentes’ Cristóbal Nonato (1987) in which the narrator describes his own beget- ting, but the specific linguistic form of these narratives is not really shaped by the circumstances of his prenatal existence.
