BIBLIOGRAPHY on the HISTORY of the SOCIETY of JESUS Paul Begheyn, S.J BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE HISTORY OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS Paul Begheyn, S.J. Six years ago Father Laszl6 Polgar, SJ. (1920-2001) published his fiftieth annual bibliography for the AHSI. Unfortunately no immediate successor as bibliographer could be found, so that a huge reservoir of titles was beginning to fill up. At a meeting of the Historical Institute in Rome on 28 November 2005 its members discussed the possibilities of restarting the bibliography. Then and there I expressed my willingness to perform this task. This bibliography differs from the earlier ones in the following areas: 1. In general the bibliography will include mainly titles on history; titles on spirituality can be found in specialized journals like Manresa. 2. Only titles published from 2000 will be included. Pre-2000 titles overlooked in earlier issues, will not be included. 3. The bibliography will not give the full Christian names of the authors, only their initials. 4. The bibliography will not mention the series ofwhich certain publications are part. 5. The size of books will not be mentioned. 6. Titles in private Jesuit publications will not be included. 7. In each section titles will be presented in chronological order, and within each year in alphabetical order. 8. The use of capitals in titles of publications has been reduced. 9. Membership of a religious order or congregation of an author will not be mentioned. 10. In the section 'Persons' and in the index on authors prefixes like 'de', 'de la', 'van' and 'von der' will be put after the family name. This first bibliography in 'new style' includes only part of the titles already collected. The reader will thus find titles from the years 2000-2005. Next year the bibliography will include titles from the years 2000-2006. 385 386 BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE HISTORY OF THE JESUITS I am grateful to the following persons who have helped me in putting together this bibliography: Nicoletta Basilotta (Roma), Fernando Arrocha Duarte, S.J. (Malaga), Ad Dudink (Leiden), Bernard Deprez (Leuven), Roman Malek, S.V.D. (Sankt Augustin), Georges Ruyssens, S.J. (Roma) en Nicolas Standaert. S.J. (Leuven). THE WAY a review of Christian spirituality published by the British Jesuits January 2019 Volume 58, Number 1 MEANING IN LIGHT AND DARKNESS a © Steve Halam THE WAY January 2019 Foreword 5–6 Living with Anxiety, Medication and Prayer 7–18 Rob Culhane It is perhaps not surprising that drugs prescribed to mitigate the effects of anxiety will affect the life of prayer. It is less clear, however, what will actually happen in practice. In a frank and open article, Rob Culhane, an Anglican priest working in Australia, describes how his own ministry and spirituality have been influenced by the medicines he needs. Marriage Vows in the Principle and Foundation 19–24 Gerald O’Collins The preamble to St Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises, the text called the ‘Principle and Foundation’, has frequently been regarded as dry, analytical, and rooted more in philosophy than in spiritual experience. However, by comparing it with the language of the marriage vows, Gerry O’Collins argues that it can be seen rather as a rich, loving and even lyrical passage. The Logos of Our Lives: Viktor Frankl, Meaning and Spiritual 25–35 Direction Richard Boileau The opening of St John’s Gospel is often translated as, ‘In the beginning was the Word’. An alternative translation, however, would be ‘In the beginning was the Meaning’. Viktor Frankl, a leading twentieth-century psychotherapist, wrote widely on the concept of meaning, and Richard Boileau here explores his work in the context of spiritual accompaniment. Spirituality and Living Adoremus: Discover a Whole New World 37–40 Margaret Scott Eucharistic adoration, where the consecrated host is displayed on an altar as a focus for prayer, is a Roman Catholic practice that can seem strange to other Christians.

Examining the Fatih Mosque housed in a former Catholic church in the city center, we show in what ways the efforts at making this mosque iconic are shaped by the building’s iconic field, by which we denote its entanglement with other (religious and non-religious) sites in the past and the present.

  • Achievements of Catholic Scientists Mathematical
Achievements of Catholic Scientists Most of the Catholic Scientists listed below lived in 17th through 19th centuries. Many earlier scientists, including scholars associated with establishing the Scientific Method, and also those who played a leading role in the field of Astronomy, are listed elsewhere. Up until the Protestant Revolution scientific research in Europe occurred mostly within monasteries, Universities, and institutions of the Catholic Church. During this time the majority of scholars were priests or religious. From the 16th century on the participation of layman in science increased in both Catholic and Protestant countries. In the centuries following the Protestant Revolt, many institutions dedicated to Scientific research came under the control of the Jesuit order and from that time on, the Jesuits dominated scientific research in most Catholic countries. A longer list of both Lay Catholic and Catholic Cleric Scientists can be found on Wikipedia. Mathematical Philosophers Pope Sylvester II Prolific French scholar, also known as Gerbert of Aurillac. • 80. Teilhard's China Years
Teilhard’s China Years1 Kathleen Duffy, SSJ INTRODUCTION Jesuit paleontologist and geologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was a world traveler and, as such, an avid and prolific letter writer. Staying in touch with family and friends, sharing his experiences of a new land, continuing to minister to those at home who were seeking spiritual guidance, and attempting to communicate his evolutionary ideas with those who could give him feedback while he was far from home—each of these tasks was so very important to him. Many of his letters have been preserved, translated, and edited—letters to his parents while teaching high school in Cairo Egypt,2 to his cousin Marguerite Teillard-Chambon while serving on the front lines in World War I,3 to Maurice Blondel through Auguste Valensin shortly after the war,4 to his friends Ida Treat, Rhoda de Terra, Lucile Swan, and Leontine Zanta,5 to Auguste Valensin, SJ, Msgr. Bruno de Solages, Henri de Lubac, SJ, and André Ravier, SJ,6 and during the last days of his life, to his good friend Pierre Leroy, SJ,7 among others. In these letters, Teilhard describes his experiences and shares his ideas and theories more informally than he does in his essays and so provides deeper insight into his approach to life, his strengths and weaknesses, his hopes and dreams. For this paper, I rely mainly on Teilhard’s letters collected in the volume, Letters from a Traveller,8 written during the years he spent in China. These letters, addressed to his cousin, Marguerite Teillard-Chambon, his friends, Max and Simone Bégouën, his colleague, Abbé Breuil, and his brothers, Joseph and Gabriel, and edited by his cousin, Marguerite, provide a window into the soul of a man far from home who, while living a full professional, spiritual, and social life, experienced major obstacles to the fulfillment of what he saw as a personal call from God.

  • Mundelein Reborn
THE MAGAZINE OF LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO WINTER 2012 Mundelein reborn PLUS PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2012 n HOMECOMING WELcome FROM THE PRESIDENT And CEO MICHAEL J. GARANZINI, S.J. Our world is a changing one. As we look at the world that our present students will inherit, we know that they will live in communities and participate in workplaces that are increasingly a mix of cultures, races, creeds, and values. We can see that technology will offer more and more information, and perhaps less and less analysis. We can envision a furthering of environmental degradation and depletion of the planet’s resources. And we anticipate that growing financial and educational gaps between and among different constituents in our societies will lead to even more political and social strife and upheaval around our worlds. Fundamentally, all education is about preparing students for their own future. It is about helping them become critical thinkers who can absorb and create new knowledge. It is about giving them the skills to lead and serve in the world they’re going to inhabit—in a world that will need their leadership. When Jesuits started educating children 450 years ago in Messina, Sicily, it was at the request president’S of the town’s merchant class. They wanted their report 2012 sons to take over the management not only of BEGINS AFTER PAGE 39 their companies but of their city. So the Jesuits devised an educational program, which has been reformed and fine-tuned since that time, Father Garanzini spoke to the City Club of Chicago, a group of to prepare people to be not just merchants, local community and business leaders, this fall.
