Examining the Fatih Mosque housed in a former Catholic church in the city center, we show in what ways the efforts at making this mosque iconic are shaped by the building’s iconic field, by which we denote its entanglement with other (religious and non-religious) sites in the past and the present.

  • Mundelein Reborn
THE MAGAZINE OF LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO WINTER 2012 Mundelein reborn PLUS PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2012 n HOMECOMING WELcome FROM THE PRESIDENT And CEO MICHAEL J. GARANZINI, S.J. Our world is a changing one. As we look at the world that our present students will inherit, we know that they will live in communities and participate in workplaces that are increasingly a mix of cultures, races, creeds, and values. We can see that technology will offer more and more information, and perhaps less and less analysis. We can envision a furthering of environmental degradation and depletion of the planet’s resources. And we anticipate that growing financial and educational gaps between and among different constituents in our societies will lead to even more political and social strife and upheaval around our worlds. Fundamentally, all education is about preparing students for their own future. It is about helping them become critical thinkers who can absorb and create new knowledge. It is about giving them the skills to lead and serve in the world they’re going to inhabit—in a world that will need their leadership. When Jesuits started educating children 450 years ago in Messina, Sicily, it was at the request president’S of the town’s merchant class. They wanted their report 2012 sons to take over the management not only of BEGINS AFTER PAGE 39 their companies but of their city. So the Jesuits devised an educational program, which has been reformed and fine-tuned since that time, Father Garanzini spoke to the City Club of Chicago, a group of to prepare people to be not just merchants, local community and business leaders, this fall.

Zichem, C.SS.R., 1971-2003 Introduction Between 1866 and 2003 seven Redemptorist missionaries served as bishops in Suriname in the northeast sector of South America. Five of these were from Brabant in the south of the Netherlands. A sixth, Johannes H. Schaap, was also Dutch, but hailed from the northern city of Amsterdam. The seventh, and the last to serve, Aloysius F. Zichem, was native Surinamese. Suriname, generally considered, was a Dutch colony from 1667 until 1975. However it must be noted that it was under British control during two relatively short periods, 1651-1667 and 1804-1816. Its status as an independent Republic has con- tinued from 1975 until the present. In 1865 the Vatican Congregation for Propaganda Fide (now for Evangelization of Peoples) requested that the Redemp- torists assume responsibility for the pastoral care of the Suri- namese people. (Previously Dutch diocesan missionaries from the Netherlands had this responsibility). When the Redemptorists ar- rived, the Catholic Church had designated the area a Vicariate Apostolic 1. It retained this latter status until 1958 when a dio- 1 From 1825 Suriname was a «Prefecture Apostolic».

  • BIBLIOGRAPHY on the HISTORY of the SOCIETY of JESUS Paul Begheyn, S.J
BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE HISTORY OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS Paul Begheyn, S.J. Six years ago Father Laszl6 Polgar, SJ. (1920-2001) published his fiftieth annual bibliography for the AHSI. Unfortunately no immediate successor as bibliographer could be found, so that a huge reservoir of titles was beginning to fill up. At a meeting of the Historical Institute in Rome on 28 November 2005 its members discussed the possibilities of restarting the bibliography. Then and there I expressed my willingness to perform this task. This bibliography differs from the earlier ones in the following areas: 1. In general the bibliography will include mainly titles on history; titles on spirituality can be found in specialized journals like Manresa. 2. Only titles published from 2000 will be included. Pre-2000 titles overlooked in earlier issues, will not be included. 3. The bibliography will not give the full Christian names of the authors, only their initials. 4. The bibliography will not mention the series ofwhich certain publications are part. 5. The size of books will not be mentioned. 6. Titles in private Jesuit publications will not be included. 7. In each section titles will be presented in chronological order, and within each year in alphabetical order. 8. The use of capitals in titles of publications has been reduced. 9. Membership of a religious order or congregation of an author will not be mentioned. 10. In the section 'Persons' and in the index on authors prefixes like 'de', 'de la', 'van' and 'von der' will be put after the family name. This first bibliography in 'new style' includes only part of the titles already collected.
