Alligator Soup and Extended Day Winter 2017

Alligator Soup Serves Kindergarten, Grades One through Six and Allen-Stevenson siblings

Calendar The program operates in three sessions: Fall, from September 12 through December 15; Winter, from January 3 through March 17; and Spring, from April 3 through June 2.

Mini Soup and Extended Day Mini Soup, for Grades 1- 4, is short-term after school care, and Extended Day, for all grades, is long-term after school care. Kindergartners may attend Mini Soup and Extended Day after dismissal from an Alligator Soup class. A child not picked up at dismissal is sent to Mini Soup. A child registered for Extended Day or not picked up after Mini Soup or Alligator Soup is sent to Extended Day. The child’s school account is charged for Mini Soup, the fourth time a family uses it, $10 for the first 15 minutes and for each additional 15 minutes or part thereof, and for Extended Day, $12 an hour or part thereof. A parent can arrange in advance for Mini Soup. Extended Day can be arranged by day, by week, or by trimester and different rates apply. Financial aid is not available for this low-cost program.

Days of Operation Alligator Soup meets Monday through Friday, including Parent-Teacher Conference days. There is no Alligator Soup when School dismisses at Noon or on School holidays. In the winter there is no Alligator Soup on: ● Monday, 1/16: Martin Luther King Jr. Day ● Tuesday, 1/17: Faculty/Staff Professional Day ● Monday, 2/20: Presidents’ Day ● Tuesday, 2/21: Presidents’ Day

Hours of Operation Kindergarten: Classes meet from dismissal at 2:00PM until 3:15PM unless otherwise noted. A snack is provided. Dismissal at Allen-Stevenson is from the sidewalk. Please do not keep your son waiting.

Grades One through Six On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, classes meet from 3:45PM to 5:00PM unless otherwise noted. On Wednesdays and Fridays, classes run from dismissal until the time given in the course description. Snack and supervision are provided from dismissal until classes begin. Dismissal at Allen-Stevenson is from the sidewalk. Please do not keep your son waiting.

A boy who is registered for an Alligator Soup class will automatically go to the class after school unless his homeroom teacher has a written note excusing him from Alligator Soup.

Registration Procedures Registration opens online on Wednesday, November 30th. Registration is only online through the Allen-Stevenson website. After Friday, January 13th, Alligator Soup registration will be finalized and no further changes to your son’s registration will be permitted.

A class with insufficient enrollment will be canceled. A class with excessive enrollment will be settled by a random drawing. Parents are contacted on Friday, December 16, ONLY if a class has been oversubscribed or canceled.

A boy's student account is billed for all Alligator Soup fees. Fees for classes a boy adds or drops by January 13 are prorated. Credits or refunds are not given for absences or withdrawals after Friday, January 13.

Monday

Parkour Joel Rappelfeld’s Kids Action Grades 1-4 Fee: $246

In this program, we mix conditioning, gymnastics, balance, teamwork, confidence building and fun. Each week Joel's Kids Action Sports coaches will begin the class by doing warm-ups and some strengthening to prepare for the course ahead. Then we will take the boys to the park, weather permitting, and create a manageable obstacle course for them to conquer. Positive thinking is always stressed and success is guaranteed, at any level. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Smart Kids Invest & MineCraft Rob McCallum Grades 4-6 Fee: $465

Boys a that tracks the stock market in real time over many weeks with $100,000 to invest and a credit extension of $100,000. They examine free market activities, stock sectors, mutual funds, and theories of individual stock picking. Boys will also have an opportunity to enter the educational World of Minecraft to collaborate and create a replicable business model. Teams will present their world with a budget or cost savings. Creativity and innovation is key to their prosperity. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Cooking Science with Tastebuds! Tastebuds Kitchen Grades 1&2 Fee: $352

Calling all kid detectives! Taste Buds Kitchen’s Cooking Science is a dynamic hands-on cooking class that is built around the natural phenomena that occur in cooking. Your budding chef will be kept on his toes as he uncovers the secrets in everyday recipes in this hands-on after school cooking club. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Soccer Indoors Kids in Sports Grades 1&2, 3&4 Fee: $572

Wintertime takes soccer indoors to the NY Sports Club, 91st St/3rd Ave. Boys work on their skills and break into teams, grouped by skill, for game play. Dismissal at 5:15pm from the School.

Skateboard Decorating Alex Exposito Grades 1-4 Fee: $440

Boys decorate real skateboard decks, and large and small canvases, with a variety of painting and craft techniques. They create crazy critters out of wood, fabric, and yarn. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Just Dance with Prof. Calcavecchia! Fabby Calcavecchia Grades 1-4 Fee: $440

Inspired by the Wii game, Just Dance, have fun moving and shaking to the hits of today! We'll start with a warm up activity, some rhythmic movement, Pilates stretching and standing yoga poses. Then, we'll explore "Just Dance" movements with choreography that is easy to follow and songs chosen by the boys, themselves. Finally, it'll be time to cool down and relax with some gentle stretching, and, to celebrate the end of the session, the boys will put on a brief performance to which everyone will be invited. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Homework Helping Genevievre Broche Grades 3&4 Fee: $528

Third and fourth graders get extra support to help them complete their homework. Teacher Genevievre Broche works with the boys to further develop their planning, study, and problem-solving skills. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

As busy as our boys' schedules can become, quiet time at the end of the day for homework can be very beneficial. Spend time after dismissal working to complete assignments for the next day or get a head start on longer-term assignments. Mr. Neulander will also help boys organize their schedules and formulate plans to make sure all homework gets done well and on time. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Tennis All-City Junior Tennis Grades 1-6 Fee: $704

The All-City Junior Tennis program motivates and trains serious tennis players and is easy and fun for new and recreational players. It includes instruction, practice, and competition. The boys need tennis rackets. Boys living between 57th & 96th Streets are returned to their homes between 5:30 & 6:00pm; beyond these points boys are returned to the School.

Building Video with Bloxels® Marissa Zelmanowicz and Chris Brazee Grades 3&4 Fee: $673

Starting with physical blocks on a game board, boys will design their own video games and bring them to life on the iPad. We will explore design thinking and story creation, learn how to set goals and challenges, help each other solve problems, and make great games. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Lego® Robotics Chap Warren Grades 4-6 Fee: $528

This class is a continuation from the fall’s prerequisite course. Therefore, it is only open to students who have taken the fall course. A-S's LEGO® Robotics Team competes in the FIRST LEGO® League tournament against other schools. The "Animal Allies" competition has students building LEGO-based robots to complete real-world missions on a thematic playing surface. Dismissal is at 5:00pm. Only boys who participated in Lego® Robotics in the fall may sign up for this soup in the winter.

Español! Camilla Iturralde Grades 5&6 Fee: $528

Need to brush up your Spanish skills? Come and work with Señorita Iturralde for some extra support and reinforcement. We will use a variety of methods to target the areas that you need help with. Toy Inventions Creative Art Start Grades 1-3 Fee: $545

These inventors create and engineer exciting designs such as jitterbugs, gizmos, balloon cars, and things that move with electric motors. The boys make surprising links with real life engineering and their own creations. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Break Dancing Corey “Nova” Grimes Grades 1-4 Fee: $552

Nova, the professional breakdancer, guides breakdancers through Toprock, Downrock, and Freeze moves. Each class ends in a dance off! Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Actors’ Workshop Jennifer Vermont-Davis Grades 1-4 Fee: $495

The curtain rises on these actors as they engage in acting workshops, improvisations, theatre games, and storytelling. Boys create and develop characters, scripts, and skits. Dismissal is at 5:00 pm.

Flag Football Kids in Sports Grades 1&2, 3&4 Fee: $644

Boys learn the skills and techniques of this non-contact version of football on Randall's Island and are grouped according to skill for game play. Kodu Play Code Advantage Grades 1&2 Fee: $435

In this class, we enable young kids to make their own 3D video games by using fundamental coding concepts. Children will take Kodu apple picking, program Kodu to play hide and seek, and even help Kodu find his way out of a maze! Students will even create games such as Pac-man, space alien invaders, and their very own superhero adventure game! Students will have loads of fun all while learning to code and exercising critical thinking, creative expression, and logical reasoning skills. This class is designed for young children with little or no computer/coding experience. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Woodworking Creative Art Start Grades 1-4 Fee: $495

Boys design and build their own chosen projects in the Woodshop. They use hand tools to saw, hammer, and sand pieces of wood into works of art. Dismissal is at 4:45pm.

Students build a foundation for this beautiful language through storytelling and a specially- designed curriculum. Classes are conducted in 70% Mandarin, and boys learn 50 to 100 words each session. Dismissal is at 5:00pm.

Lacrosse Indoors Corbin’s Crusaders Grades 1-4 Fee: $728

Lacrosse is the “fastest game on two feet” and the fastest growing in the US. Boys are instructed in the fundamentals of lacrosse such as cradling, scooping, passing, shooting, defense and team play. Equipment needed: Lacrosse stick, shoulder pads, arm pads, and helmet. Mindfulness for Kids! Kristin Ginty Grades 4-6 Fee: $545

In this introduction to mindfulness course, we'll explore the ways that the breath, sound, movement, and even taste, can help us learn how to pause and check in with ourselves. Through fun and immersive games and activities, we'll teach students how to focus on the only moment they can control, the present moment. We’ll explore how students react under stressful situations, like taking a test or being in a conflict, and how mindfulness can help shape our responses. Aviation Quest Hobby Quest Grades 1-4 Fee: $605

Get ready to go on a high-flying adventure and join us for Hobby Quest’s Aviation Quest! We’ll start our journey by going back in history and building the Boeing P-26, a super realistic model using a rubber band powered engine and depicting the first American all-metal production fighter used by the United States Army Air Corps in 1932! The Mystery of Magic Joel Rappelfeld’s Kids Action Sports Grades 1-4 Fee: $338

Be part of the mystical and exciting world of magic. Every week our Magic Gurus will introduce the apprentice magicians to a few different tricks. Offering valuable skills and training for any era, this classical sport will be instructed by staff from Fencing for Progress. Unicorn TV Chap Warren Grades 4-6 Fee: $847

Are you a TV star? Have you ever wanted to be a television star, host Sports Center, or maybe even write and perform skits for Saturday Night Live? Well, here’s your chance! Boys will have the opportunity to write, film, and edit their own television shows and then will work together to produce a finished product that they can proudly show off to friends and family alike! The boys practice the fundamentals of throwing, catching, cradling and shooting as well as team strategies and the rules of the sport. Origami Sang Bae Grades 1-3 Fee: $605

Boys learn the basics of the Yoshizawa-Randlett diagramming system of paper folding. They start with simple folds and designs such as mountain and valley folds and bird base and move on to more complex techniques such as modular origami and tessellations and even learn to design their own folds. Dismissal is at 4:45pm.

Karate Sensei Arthur Hearns Grades 1-4 Fee: $447

The Hands of Life Martial Arts program builds very important life skills and works to help children develop their character in a fun way. Character skills such as focus, discipline, respect and better listening skills are at the center of the program’s core values. In addition, we make sure to teach age appropriate physical skills in a fun way to ensure the success of each student in martial arts. Students will learn the classical fundamentals of karate as well as basic self-defense ideas. Dismissal is at 4:45pm.

Golf Indoors Corbin’s Crusaders Grades 1&2, 3&4 Fee: $1,089

The Urban Golf Academy teaches boys all aspects of the game from the grip and the swing for the long and short game to the game rules and etiquette. UGA uses modified equipment designed to help boys develop both their skills and love of the game. Equipment is provided. Earned Performance Tony D’Itri Grades 4-6 Fee: $484

This sports conditioning program is designed for speed, agility and overall performance. The program curriculum will consist of calisthenics, plyometric work, and running all with the intention of improving balance, explosiveness, and injury prevention. Boys will be introduced to a multitude of fitness modalities. Games such as ultimate frisbee, angle ball, team handball, and much more will be played to help with athletic movement all in a fun, exciting and cooperative environment. Classes will be held in the gym, roof, and/or Central Park (weather permitting). Dismissal is at 4:30pm.

Soccer en Español Jesus Parra Grades 2&3 Fee: $665

In “Soccer en Español" students will have fun and get exercise learning the fundamentals of soccer though simple Spanish instruction. Using visual images and auditory learning, students will play team games that incorporate Spanish commands and vocabulary like "run" and "pass" helping students become familiar with a foreign language outside of the classroom. Ice Skating at Wollman Rink Wollman Rink Instructors Grade K Fee: $648

Kindergartners, for the first half hour, take ice skating lessons from Wollman Rink instructors. For the second half hour, they have a great time skating with classmates. The boys need helmets with or without cages, warm gloves and snow pants. A bus takes the boys to Central Park and returns them to School for dismissal at 4:30pm.

Stop Motion Animation Spy Stories The Good School Grade K Fee: $447

Join us for an after school class full of intrigue and adventure. Students in this hands-on integrated technology class will use a variety of art making materials and processes to create sets and characters for their unique invented adventures. Using the art of stop motion animation, students will bring their stories to life while learning professional grade software, DragonFrame Stop Motion. The finished film can be downloaded, viewed and shared again and again with friends and family all over the world. Dismissal is at 3:20pm.

Team Sports Academy Corbin’s Crusaders Grade K Fee: $847

Why play one sport, when you can play them all? Boys will play and learn the skills that make sports fun! We play basketball, baseball, soccer, and more! Dismissal is at 3:45pm.

Karate Sensei Arthur Hearns Grade K Fee: $447

The Hands of Life Martial Arts program builds very important life skills and works to help children develop their character in a fun way. Character skills such as focus, discipline, respect and better listening skills are at the center of the program’s core values. In addition, we make sure to teach age appropriate physical skills in a fun way to ensure the success of each student in martial arts. Students will learn the classical fundamentals of karate as well as basic self-defense ideas. Dismissal is at 3:15pm.

Lacrosse Kids in Sports Grade K Fee: $726

Boys learn the skills of lacrosse at the NY Sports Club, 1st Avenue/76th Street. Game play is introduced with emphasis on teamwork and sportsmanship. Boys need lacrosse helmets, sticks, gloves, and shoulder and arm pads. Dismissal is at 3:20pm from the School.
