Jesuit Education in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1565–1773)
journal of jesuit studies 5 (2018) 441-455 brill.com/jjs Jesuit Education in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1565–1773) Jakub Niedźwiedź Jagiellonian University, Cracow [email protected] Abstract This article examines the impact of the Jesuit educational system on the culture of the multi-religious and multi-ethnic federation, through four problems. The first part of the paper presents the beginnings and development of the educational network and the Jesuit monopoly of education in the country. In the second part, it is shown how the Ratio studiorum was adapted to local conditions and how Latin culture was promoted in the Orthodox provinces of eastern Poland and Lithuania. One of the major consequences of these processes was the unification of a literary language and literature in Polish (Polish became the second language of Latinitas). The third part raises the question of the impact of rhetorical studies on political activity of the gen- try, through the formation of the citizen-orator ideal. The development of literature, theatre, music, and the sciences forms the subject of the fourth part, which also lists the main achievements of Jesuit scholars and alumni. In conclusion, some observa- tions are offered on the specific nature of Jesuit education in this part of Europe and its legacy after the dissolution of the Society of Jesus. Keywords Jesuits – Poland – Lithuania – early modern education – Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth – Jesuit colleges – Polish literature © niedźwiedź, 2018 | DOI:10.1163/22141332-00503006 This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the prevailing cc-by-nc license at the time of publication. -

Joanna Raźny — Katedra Oświecenia i Literatury Stosowa- nej, Instytut Filolgii Polskiej, Wydział Filologiczny, Uniwersytet Łódzki, 90–015 Łódź, al. Kaaba Versus Ringtheater – the Holy Cross Church – Warsaw’S Pogrom: Two Worlds and Three Tragedies in Modlitwa (1882) by Cyprian Norwid
MATERIALS STUDIA NORWIDIANA 38:2020 ENGLISH VERSION DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18290/sn.2020.38-11en BOGDAN BURDZIEJ KAABA VERSUS RINGTHEATER – THE HOLY CROSS CHURCH – WARSAW’S POGROM: TWO WORLDS AND THREE TRAGEDIES IN MODLITWA (1882) BY CYPRIAN NORWID Among the literary works written by Cyprian Norwid during the last years of his life there are ones that have not been extensively discussed yet.1 One example is a short prose piece titled Modlitwa [Prayer], which reads: – – – Do meczetu w Kaaba o godzinie modlitwy południowej wbiegł zapamiętalec i zawołał: „Gore! In the laconic, aphoristic ‘parable’ Modlitwa, written after the tragic fire at the Viennese thea- tre, where many people died, the poet expressed his deep respect for the Muslims’ unshaken faith in the power of prayer and Providence – the kind of faith that excludes from their historiosophic horizon any chance or absurdity.” R. Are you craving for the medieval mysteries and unforgettable impressions, exciting trips and new discoveries? Welcome to Belarus! It is often called “the country of castles”. The first stone fortresses appeared here in the XIIth century! The tower of Kamenets rising on the western border of Belarus has been an amazing example of the beauty and grace for more than 7 centuries. Mir and Nesvizh castles included into the UNESCO World Heritage list are stunning and unique constructions. Brest fortress walls remember lots of historic events – tragic as well as fascinating. In this edition we present the most interesting objects of the defense architecture of Belarus. However there are far more of them than this brochure can include.
