The new series will see the iconic Theater returning to its comedic roots as it further expands its robust programming offerings. Apollo Comedy Club will feature an evening of comedy on the Apollo’s intimate Soundstage starring the best up-and-coming talent in comedy today including Davian Velez, Omar Thompson and Dino Vigo. Hosted by Harlem native Smokey Suarez and with music by the renowned DJ Qool Marv, the comedy shows will precede the Theater’s weekend music series, Apollo Music Café, extending the Theater’s late night offerings. Apollo Comedy Club will open its doors on Thursday, October 1, 2015. Directly preceding opening night, the Theater will induct non-musical artists into the Apollo Walk of Fame, for the first time. Groundbreaking comedians Jackie “Moms” Mabley, Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor, all of whom had a longstanding relationship with the Theater and are considered Apollo Legends, will officially be inducted into the Walk of Fame to kick off the comedy series. The Apollo Theater’s Walk of Fame honors legendary performers who have helped shape the American music landscape and built the Apollo into one of the world’s most enduring cultural institutions. The plaques will be installed underneath the Apollo’s marquee on 125th street, alongside plaques for numerous Apollo legends including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, and Patti Labelle, among others. Recognized primarily for its role in launching the careers of some of the world’s biggest music artists, the Apollo also has a long and storied history with comedy. Since the Theater first opened its doors in 1934, comics were a central part of the Theater’s variety shows. From the 1930’s through the early 1950’s, comedy at the Apollo consisted of situational, sketch humor and evolved to include stand-up monologues and social commentary from the mid-1950’s and on. The Apollo’s roster of comic artists who graced its legendary stage, adding to its already rich legacy include: Lincoln Perry (Stepin Fetchit), Eddie ―Rochester‖ Anderson, Pigmeat Markham, Mantan Moreland, Tim ―Kingfish‖ Moore, Butterbeans and Susie, Flournoy Miller, Timmie Rogers, Jackie ―Moms‖ Mabley, Slappy White, Redd Foxx, Nipsey Russell, George Kirby, Dick Gregory, Flip Wilson, Richard Pryor, Paul Mooney, to name a few. ―Comedy is very much a part of the Apollo’s DNA and we have been talking about how to reintroduce it into our mix of programming for a few years now. As with everything we do, we always want to make sure that we honor the Theater’s legacy and present programming that is new and fresh and examines the legacy through a contemporary lens. Bob is the perfect partner to help us do that with comedy because he understands that space inside and out,‖ said Mikki Shepard, the Apollo’s Executive Producer. ―We are very excited to be partnering with him and to be able to give emerging and established comedians a nurturing forum that allows them to experiment and hone their craft.‖ ―The launch of Apollo Comedy Club and my involvement is a very meaningful thing. The Apollo was in the fabric of my household. I would visit the Theater as a kid and see Jackie ―Moms‖ Mabley and it was an exciting experience that is embedded in me,‖ said Bob Sumner, Apollo Comedy Club Curator, Producer of Def Comedy Jam and Creator of LAFFMOBB. ―The Apollo is known to be the launching pad for many of the biggest stars in entertainment, both in music and comedy. So for me to now have an opportunity to come to the Apollo and curate Apollo Comedy Club, I feel that I have come full circle. Since the early 90s I've been instrumental in launching the careers of many of today's superstars in comedy. Now being able to continue to identify the best up and coming comedians, I know this great relationship will take these emerging comedians to the next level in their careers. It's all in the formula, and we both have it.‖ Apollo Comedy Club’s first season will run from October 2015 to June 2016. • Ethics After Hours the Bleeding Edge
Ethics After Hours The Bleeding Edge Documentary _________________________________________________________________ Summary1 Medical devices can save lives, help us live longer, and improve our quality of life. In The Bleeding Edge, Kirby Dick, Amy Ziering and Amy Herdy explore how lax regulations, corporate cover-ups and the drive for profit in the medical device industry may put patients at risk. The program features cases where medical devices such as Essure (a permanent birth control device), vaginal mesh, the DaVinci Surgical System, and chrome-cobalt hip- replacements have caused irrevocable harm to patients. Director: Kirby Dick Producer: Amy Ziering and Amy Herdy Released: April 21, 2018 Available on Netflix Duration: 1 hours 40 Mins. Discussion questions: • What was your initial reaction to this documentary? • In your opinion, what are the ethical responsibilities of the medical device industry, the medical community, and the government in ensuring patient safety regarding medical devices through approval, usage guidelines, and reporting of adverse events? • Should health care providers be better educated about the approval processes for drugs and medical devices? • According to the documentary, pre-market approval (PMA) for medical devices requires only one clinical trial or study. o Did it surprise you that the approval for medical devices requires fewer steps than the approval of new drugs? o Discuss various reasons for this difference in approval process. Do you believe that it is justified? • What type of regulatory and non-regulatory measures do you think could help alleviate the problems around patient safety outlined in the documentary? 1 This summary is adapted from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bleeding_Edge and Netflix’s website.

  • 1 the Bleeding Edge, An Independent Documentary Directed
1 The Bleeding Edge, an independent documentary directed by Kirby Dick and produced by Amy Ziering through their production company, Chain Camera Pictures, unearths systematic corruption within the “$400 billion medical device industry” (The Bleeding Edge 2018). The film takes a deep dive into the healthcare impacts of medical device “innovation” (Dick 2018). Both Dick and Ziering specialize in investigative journalism and documentary having produced the Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated documentary, The Invisible War (The Bleeding Edge 2018). In all of their documentaries, Dick and Ziering focus on issues of “breaking news,” aiming to inform public opinion, and influence policy (Fuchs 2018). According to Ziering, in an interview by No Film School, when she and Dick decide to make a film they “first get intrigued, then outraged, and then [they] decide to make a movie” (Buder 2018). In the case of The Bleeding Edge, the topic of the film arose when one of Chain Camera Picture’s producers, Amy Herdy, came forward with “this crazy story” about one of her neighbors, who had experienced complications due to an untested medical device (Buder 2018). The disbelief following the interview resulted in an in-depth investigation into this “breaking news,” where research was conducted, and interviews with survivors, professionals, scholars, and doctors were recorded (Fuchs 2018). This information was then synthesized and analyzed, before getting compiled into a commercially consumable film that informs the public of the fractured health system that “has devolved into [a] business” (Fuchs 2018) The Bleeding Edge is an independent film, meaning that,t was not produced in Hollywood and is not backed by any super PACs or the government (Grove 2014).

Outside of the rules and constraints of serious discourse and cultural production, these comedic corrections thrive on discursive and semiotic ambiguity and temporality. Comedic corrections offer alternate interpretations overlooked or silenced by hegemonic structures and operating modes of cultural common sense. The view that their effects are ephemeral and insignificant is an incomplete and misguided evaluation. Since this paper adopts Hegel’s understanding of comedy as the spirit (Geist) made material, its very constitution, and thus its power, resides in exposing the internal thought processes often left unexamined, bringing them into the foreground, dissecting them, and exposing them for ridicule and transformation. In essence, the work of comedy is to consider all points of human processing and related structuration as fair game. The phenomenological nature of comedy calls for a micro-level examination. Select examples from The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1968), The Richard Pryor Show (1977), Saturday Night Live (1990), and Chappelle’s Show (2003) will demonstrate representative ways that comedy attacks and transforms racial hegemony. Keywords: comedy, cultural sociology, popular culture, race and racism, resistance. During periods of social unrest, what micro-level actions are available to the public? Or, how does a particular society respond to inequities that are widely shared and agreed upon as intolerable aspects of a society? One popular method to challenge a hegemonic structure, and to survive it, is comedy.

  • Walter Latham Biography
Walter Latham Often referred to as "The King of Comedy,” Walter Latham is grateful for the humble upbringing and everyday challenges that shaped his early life, and instilled in him a fierce passion that led to his success as a business mogul and humanitarian. Born to a single mother in East New York, Brooklyn, Latham soon found himself in a similar situation, becoming a father at the young age of 18, and struggling to get by with odd jobs and a brief stint in the United States Air Force. At 20, he caught a break with a permanent position at the American Express Call Center in Greensboro, NC and was thrilled to finally provide healthcare for his son, even though he knew he was bound for something greater. Inspiration soon struck Latham, after attending a performance by his childhood friend, MC Lyte, when he realized his calling was to produce concerts. He borrowed money from his mother and produced his first concert in a nightclub. The headline act didn’t show and Latham had to refund the patrons their money but what he learned from this unfortunate experience would change his path forever. Latham decided to produce more concerts but mitigate his losses by soliciting sponsorships. He wrote and mailed 50 letters to various corporations about promoting a southeast tour with the hottest comedians. When Coors Brewing Company expressed interest, Latham soon found himself, at age 21, standing in a boardroom of top executives pitching his comedy idea. His first comedy tour featured Chris Tucker and Bill Bellamy and Coors was so impressed they asked Latham to do another.
