BIOGRAPHY: Michael “Pinball” Clemons Canadian Football Hall-of-Famer | Founder, Pinball Clemons Foundation Few people exemplify the qualities of personal excellence, teamwork, community leadership, and overcoming the odds better than CFL legend Michael “Pinball” Clemons. With boundless energy, Pinball’s talks centre on the potential for each of us to achieve anything we set our minds to. Unabashedly emotional and impactful, he shows audiences how to put heart into everything they do. Pinball joined the National Football League in 1987, and the Toronto Argonauts (and the CFL) in 1989. He was nicknamed “Pinball” because of his running style: his diminutive size and extraordinary balance allowed him to “bounce” between defensive players, drawing comparisons to a pinball machine. In 1990, he was honoured with the CFL’s “most outstanding player” award, after setting the single-season record for all-purpose yards. He played his last game as an Argonaut in 2000, before becoming head coach of the team. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and in 2016, Pinball was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. In 2007, Pinball stepped down as head coach to become the Chief Executive Officer; in 2009, he was appointed to Vice-Chair of the team (he has since left the position). That same year, he founded the Michael “Pinball” Clemons Foundation, which is dedicated to helping disadvantaged youth. He is also currently working with Marc and Craig Kielburger, founders of Free the Children, in an initiative to build schools and clean water systems in Africa. The CFL will host regional combines for the fifth consecutive year, and the third-year it will host a trio of them beginning in Montreal on March 10, followed by one in Toronto on March 17 and the final regional combine in Regina on March 23. Last year, 17 players from regional combines were extended an invitation to the CFL Combine including 10 of those players being selected in the 2016 CFL Draft.

THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 14, No. 3 (1992) The Game Copyright © 1992 Robert Sproule All Rights Reserved The first time in senior Canadian football history that two teams produced a high scoring game was on October 2, 1956. That was the famous Montreal-Hamilton game that saw the Als bury the Tiger-Cats 82- 14 as Montreal’s famous Sam Etcheverry demonstrated the power of a complex forward passing attack. The two teams combined for a then record 96 total points. Several years later, on Oct. 17, 1982, in Calgary, the Tiger-Cats and the Calgary Stampeders failed to generate any form of defense as both clubs seemed to score with ease, first one team and then the other. When the final whistle was blown, Calgary had outlasted Hamilton 55-48 for a new combined record of 103 points. But, as the saying goes, records were made to be broken, and on the night of September 1, 1990 in Toronto, the record feII. The teams were the BC Lions, who were going nowhere this season, and the Argonauts, who were fighting for a playoff berth. When the teams lined up, little did they know history was in the making. BC kicked off under the lights of the Sky Dome (the last great mechanical marvel of the civilized worId) to the Argos, who promptly turned it back over to the Lions courtesy of a Matt Dunigan interception. Two incomplete passes by Doug Flutie (Doug who?) and veteran kicker Lui Passaglia booted a 49 yard field goal for a 3-0 BC score.

Education Resource 3 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Students, Parents, Teachers and Administrators, Welcome back to another school year. As always, we are very much looking forward to seeing you throughout the year as we give back to our community and support our schools. This year is a special year for the Argos. Not only have we moved to a new renovated stadium at BMO Field, but we are also hosting the 104th Grey Cup. It’s also exciting because this year we have something very special planned for our support of our local schools. Along with continuing our very successful outreach to our community schools with our award winning Huddle Up Bullying Prevention program, we are thrilled to also introduce a Toronto Argonauts learning resource. Working with Ministry of Education documents, curriculum writers have helped us develop this special educational resource for teachers and parents to assist in the studies for youth in Grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The resource will focus on math, social sciences, history, geography, media literacy, health and phys-ed and indigenous studies. This guide will provide you with an excellent overview that will allow you to use the Argonauts, the CFL and Grey Cup history and traditions to advance our childrens’ learning and studies.
