Osseous remains of these medium sized antelopes are often encountered in African late Quaternary archaeological sites, but their specific identification poses considerable problems to the ar- chaeozoologist. A key has been developed to meet this recurrent problem and a number of diagnostic osteomorphological features, allowing a distinction between the bovids mentioned, are established. The osteomorphological characteristics, typical for Grant's gazelle have also been observed in the eight other extant African gazelles and in two Asian species, the goitred gazelle (Gazclla subguttcrosa) and the mountain gazelle (Gazclla gazclla). Introduction The following study, undertaken with in the frame of our Ph. D. research on faunal remains from late Quaternary Northeast African archaeological sites (cf. PETERS, 1986 a, 1986 b), forms a second contribution concerning the osteomorphology of the appendicular skeleton of African bovids. As explained earlier (PETERS, 1988), archaeozoologists working on bone material from such sites, are often confronted with identification problems. This is due to several factors, such as for example the diversity of bovid species in the samples and the fragmentation of the bone material. On the other hand, descriptions of osteomor• phological characteristics of the appendicular skeleton of African bovids are quite rare in literature (e. g. VAN NEER, 1981; GABLER, 1985, and others). In this paper, we describe and illustrate the distinctive osteomorphological features of three medium sized antelopes, occurring in former and present-day times in considerable numbers throughout Africa, namely Grant's gazelle, Gazella granti Brooke 1872, bohor reedbuck, Redunca redunca (Pallas, 1767) and bushbuck, Tragelaphus scriptus (Pallas, U.S. Copyright Clearance Center Code Statement: 0340 - 2096/89/1802 - 0097$02.50/0 98 PETERS 1766). Besides, we also verified whether the morphological features, established for Grant's gazelle, could be likewise recognised in other gazelies. Although for some Gazella species, the number of skeletons available for examination was quite limited, it became apparent that all species presently living in Africa shared the same osteomorphological features as those figurcd for Grant's gazelle below. Skeletons of the following African species sensu HALTENORTH/DILLER (1979: 80 — 88) have been examined: Soemmerring's gazelle, Gazella soemmerringi (Cretzschmar, 1826), dama, Gazella dama (Pallas, 1767), Thom- son's gazelle, Gazella thomsoni Günther, 1884, red-fronted gazelle, Gazella rufifrons Gray, 1846, Speke's gazelle, Gazella spekei Blyth 1863, dorcas gazelle, Gazella dorcas (Linnaeus,

Dutton This account of the national parks, reserves and other places worthy of pro- tection in Mozambique gives some idea of the wealth of wildlife in this newly independent country. One special reserve has 25,000 buffaloes—the largest concentration in the world. Protected conservation areas in Mozambique fall into six categories: 1. Parques nacionais - national parks; 2. Reservas especiais - special game reserves; 3. Reservas parciais - partial reserves; 4. Regimen de vigilancia - fauna protection zones; 5. Coutadas - hunting and photographic safari areas, normally run on a private concession basis; 6. Reservas florestais - forest reserves. Some unique areas are still outside this system but have been recommended for inclusion, together with other ecosystems worthy of inclusion in the future. Game farming or ranching is attracting considerable interest; one private and one government scheme have been proposed. NATIONAL PARKS 1.* Parque Nacional da Gorongosa (c. 3770 sq km). Situated at the southern limit of the great rift valley with an extensive flood plain and associated lakes, this park includes Brachystegia woodland Acacia and Combretum savanna. Sharply rising inselbergs (volcanic protrusions) are also a feature. The ungulates are typical floodplain species, including elephant (abundant), buffalo, wildebeest, waterbuck, zebra, reedbuck, impala and oribi; on the elevated woodland and savanna habitat there are black rhino, eland, Lichten- stein's hartebeest, sable, kudu, nyala, Sharpe's grysbok, suni, blue and grey duiker, and klipspringer are common on rock outcrops; lion, leopard and hippopotamus are abundant. Both land and water birds are prolific and diverse, and crocodiles are very common.

Gazella leptoceros belongs to the tribe Antilopini, sub-family Antilopinae, family Bovidae, which comprises about twenty species in genera Gazella , Antilope , Procapra , Antidorcas , Litocranius , and Ammodorcas (O’Reagan, 1984; Corbet and Hill, 1986; Groves, 1988). Genus Gazella comprises one extinct species, and from 10 to 15 surviving species, usually divided into three sub-genera, Nanger , Gazella, and Trachelocele (Corbet, 1978; O’Reagan, 1984; Corbet and Hill, 1986; Groves, 1988).     Redunca arundinum – Southern Reedbuck Assessment Rationale Although this species has declined across much of its former range within the assessment region, subpopulations have been reintroduced throughout much of its range, with sizeable numbers on private land. The mature population size is at least 3,884 on both formally protected areas and private lands (2010–2015 counts), which is an underestimate as not all private sector data are available. The largest subpopulation (420–840 mature individuals) occurs in iSimangaliso Wetland Park in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Based on a sample of 21 protected areas across the range of Southern Reedbuck, the overall Andre Botha population has increased by c. 68–80% over three generations (1997/2002–2015), which is driven primarily by the Free State protected areas, which have Regional Red List status (2016) Least Concern* experienced an average annual growth rate of 18% National Red List status (2004) Least Concern between 2006 and 2014. In the absence of the growth in the Free State, there has been a net 10–22% decline in the Reasons for change No change remaining 11 protected areas. This species experiences Global Red List status (2016) Least Concern local declines as it is vulnerable to poaching, illegal sport hunting and persecution, and demand for live animals for TOPS listing (NEMBA) (2007) Protected trade (possibly illegally taken from the wild). Empirical CITES listing None data indicate declines in some protected areas in KZN and North West provinces due to poaching, and anecdotal Endemic No reports suggest more severe declines outside protected *Watch-list Data areas due to poaching, sport hunting and habitat loss or degradation.

Svensson, and Peter John Taylor Abstract Scientific investigations on the mammals of Angola started over 150 years ago, but information remains scarce and scattered, with only one recent published account. Here we provide a synthesis of the mammals of Angola based on a thorough survey of primary and grey literature, as well as recent unpublished records. We present a short history of mammal research, and provide brief information on each species known to occur in the country. Particular attention is given to endemic and near endemic species. We also provide a zoogeographic outline and information on the conservation of Angolan mammals. We found confirmed records for 291 native species, most of which from the orders Rodentia (85), Chiroptera (73), Carnivora (39), and Cetartiodactyla (33). There is a large number of endemic and near endemic species, most of which are rodents or bats. The large diversity of species is favoured by the wide P. To be effective, conservation efforts require fundamental information about the species, especially its abundance, distribution and genetic factors. Prior to this study, there was a paucity of such data relating to the Dorcas gazelle in Libya and the original contribution of this study is to begin to fill this gap. The aim of this study is to develop strategies for the conservation management of Dorcas gazelle in post-conflict North East Libya. In order to achieve this aim, five objectives relating to current population status, threats to the species, population genetics, conservation and strategic population management were identified.

Overview: A guelta is a sort of stream cut into the narrow bottom of gorges or a deep canyon with many watersheds. The permanent water of the Gueltates d’Issakarassene comes primarily from permanent springs at the surface and this is supplemented seasonally by storm rains that are often very intense. A rich and diverse fauna and flora characterize this site, which is a refuge in an environment subject to extremely stressed climatic conditions. The Gueltates d’Issakarassene is one of the most important in the Ahoggar mountains and spreads over about 12 kilometres. It is also the body of water with most fish, relic fish, which reach surprising sizes. The Gueltates d’Issakarassene is also a type of wetland that has not yet been included in the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance. Its recognition would be the first for this type. 8.
