IST DIE QUANTENMECHANIK ODER DAS RECHNEN FUNDAMENTALER? Is quantum mechanics as currently conceived the ultimate theory of nature? In his book "Atomic Physics and Human Knowledge", Niels Bohr argued that because of the uncertainty principle quantum methodology might not be applicable to the study of the ultimate details of life. Delbruck disagreed, claiming that biosystems are robust to quantum disturbances, an assertion that is only partially valid rendering Bohr's argument still significant, even though normally ignored. The methods of the quantum physicist and of the biological sciences can be seen to involve two alternative approaches to the understanding of nature that can usefully complement each other, neither on its own containing the full story. That full story, taking into

  • Introduction
Introduction The following two papers of Planck represent only a very small part of the historical development of our knowledge about the spectral energy distribution of electromagnetic radiation. They are the result of a long series of investigations undertaken not only by Planck (in his work on irreversible processes since 1878, and—stimulated by Maxwell's theory as developed especially by H. Hertz—on the application of thermodynamics to electromagnetic processes, from about 1891) but also by many other scientists who contributed to these experimentally and theoretically in the 19th century or earlier. Planck did not work in a vacuum. On the theoretical side, his formulations were most directly preceded by the theoretical research of Wilhelm Wien, who not only introduced the entropy of (resonator-free) radiation in 1894, but also in 1893 and 1894 discovered several regularities governing the form of the black-body radiation function introduced in 1860 by Gustav Robert Kirchhoff; in 1896 Wien found, simultaneously and independently with Friedrich Paschen, what is now called Wien's distribution law. But Planck also drew on J. H. Poynting's theorem on energy flux, as well as on the law for total radiation obtained by Josef Stefan in 1879 from measure ments of earlier authors and derived theoretically in 1884 by L. Boltzmann. Indeed, Planck may have retained as "youthful memories" his intense preoccupation, in his 19th year, with John Tyndall's works on heat radiation. On the other hand the results, as they become evident in these two papers, are only the initial steps in the direction of the quantum theory to be developed later.

John Eccles' Struggle for a Dualistic Mind-Brain Relation Friedrich Beck Darmstadt University of Technology Abstract We experience the world through our sensory organs, and translate these impressions into our ideas of nature's functional behaviour. Experience tells us that our actions lead to a unique and predetermined result: the thrown ball stays in its calculable trajectory which is determined by gravitation and air friction. Natural processes , e.g. earth quakes or volcanic eruptions, are, however, not always predictable. The reason is the complex situation in which many unknown parameters enter the game. Nevertheless, we believe that also such processes follow deterministic laws. This situation leads to the mind-brain problem. Even when the brain, this most complex structure of biological evolution, is non-calculable in its dynamical reaction on external stimuli, we believe that, contrary to the deterministic processes in nature, our will allows us free actions which we can freely impose on our brain: the self controls the brain! The struggle between determinism and self-consciousness marks the source of difficulties which occupied John Eccles throughout his scientific career, and which he saw coming to a wonderful solution during the last decade of his life. Descartes dualism, which was the first rational formulation of dualism and interactionism: 'cogito ergo sum' - I am thinking, so I am existing - run into a seemingly irresolvable contradiction when natural science succeeded to derive all processes in nature from deterministic and causal natural laws. How can the mind control the brain when this material entity underlies the causal dynamics of nature? Materialism has a quick answer at hand: the independent mind, or self, is nothing more than an artefact of the complex and non-calculable brain dynamics.

The social and psychological aspects are discussed as back- ground to many so far discussions on the academic evaluation of his theory. In order to avoid in the future such Natansonian cases of very limited reception of valuable scientific works, it is pro- posed to introduce a digital tag in which all the information of PUBLICATION e-ISSN 2543-702X INFO ISSN 2451-3202 DIAMOND OPEN ACCESS CITATION Nagasawa, Nobukata 2018: On social and psychological aspects of a negligible reception of Natanson’s article of 1911 in the early history of quantum statistics. [email protected] Abstract A little more than half a year before Matrix Mechanics was born, Max Born finished his book Vorlesungen uber¨ Atommechanik, Erster Band, which is a state-of-the-art presentation of Bohr-Sommerfeld quantisation. This book, which today seems almost forgotten, is remarkable for its epistemological as well as technical aspects. Here I wish to highlight one aspect in each of these two categories, the first being concerned with the roleˆ of axiomatisation in the heuristics of physics, the second with the problem of quantisation proper be- fore Heisenberg and Schrodinger.¨ This paper is a contribution to the project History and Foundations of Quantum Physics of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Sciences in Berlin and will appear in the book Research and Pedagogy. • Physicists in Times of War” Has Gained New Topicality As a Result of the US Doctrine of Preemptive Strikes Adopted by the Bush Administration
Physicists in times of war Bert Schroer CBPF, Rua Dr. Xavier Sigaud 150 22290-180 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Institut fuer Theoretische Physik der FU Berlin, Germany December 2005 Abstract Though the majority of physicists would probably not support pre- emptive wars, nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction would not exist without their contributions. Einstein’s anti-militaristic position has been well-documented and the present essay recalls the role of some contemporary and past physicists on this issue. The idea that the rationality of scientific thought is a reliable antidote against supporting wars in order to achieve political or ideological aims was neither correct in the past nor is it presently valid. In the physics community there always existed a minority of supporters of wars of conquest of territory, domination of people beyond the borders or regime change. The “preemptive” war for the US hegemony in the middle east has given the problem of “physicists in times of war” new actuality, especially on the third anniversary of its start with a country slipping into civil war and culprit of this bloody mess talking about the fight for victory. One of the most perplexing appologists of the agressive war of Nazi- Germany against “the Bolshevist peril” has been the physicist Pascual Jordan whose interesting scientific and controversial political biography is the main issue of this essay. 1 Introductory remarks As a result of a significant coincidence 2005 was not only the centennial year of Einstein’s greatest discoveries but it also marks the 60 year commemoration of the end of the second world war, which was perhaps one of the greatest arXiv:physics/0603095v2 [physics.soc-ph] 20 Mar 2006 man-made tragedy and certainly 20thcenturies darkest episode.

Lower2 1Max-Planck-Institut für Dynamik und Selbstorganisation Bunsenstrasse 10, 37073 Göttingen 2Institut für Kernphysik, Goethe Universität Frankfurt Max-von-Laue-Strasse 1, 60438 Frankfurt 3Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft Faradayweg 4-6, 14195 Berlin Keywords History of Science, Atomic Physics, Quantum Physics, Stern- Gerlach experiment, molecular beams, space quantization, magnetic dipole moments of nucleons, diffraction of matter waves, Nobel Prizes, University of Zurich, University of Frankfurt, University of Rostock, University of Hamburg, Carnegie Institute. We review the work and life of Otto Stern who developed the molecular beam technique and with its aid laid the foundations of experimental atomic physics. Among the key results of his research are: the experimental test of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of molecular velocities (1920), experimental demonstration of space quantization of angular momentum (1922), diffraction of matter waves comprised of atoms and molecules by crystals (1931) and the determination of the magnetic dipole moments of the proton and deuteron (1933). 1 Introduction Short lists of the pioneers of quantum mechanics featured in textbooks and historical accounts alike typically include the names of Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Arnold Sommerfeld, Niels Bohr, Max von Laue, Werner Heisenberg, Erwin Schrödinger, Paul Dirac, Max Born, and Wolfgang Pauli on the theory side, and of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, Ernest Rutherford, Arthur Compton, and James Franck on the experimental side. However, the records in the Archive of the Nobel Foundation as well as scientific correspondence, oral-history accounts and scientometric evidence suggest that at least one more name should be added to the list: that of the “experimenting theorist” Otto Stern.
