Worksheet: How to WEAVE a Button By TexasGabi August 2020

Inspired by the fascinating tradition of making buttons, here is a very easy, simple, and fast way to weave a button. Two hexagons, a ring, and a string of are enough to get started, but it doesn’t have to end there.

Skills: Basic skills. Basic skills. Size: About 1” wide.

For additional guidance you can find a video tutorial on our YouTube channel: “How to WEAVE a Button”.

Materials PennyTURTLE™ Loom Kit, about 1” weaving width, fine-sett; find instructional videos for TURTLE looms at http://bit.ly/TurtleLoom

For this tutorial we used Catona by Scheepjes, 100% Mercerized , 10g /25 meters. You will need about 2.5 yards per button. You can use any other fingering/sock weight yarn of your choice.

1 Plastic ring, 1” (we used Sew-ology item # 539759)

Scissors, needle.

Making the Button

Weave 2 hexagons.

Use the tails for sewing the hexagons together.

Please secure the tails first: The first goes around the outermost edge stitch, and you will pierce the working . This is like a knot and will prevent the hexagon from pulling together.

Hold the two hexagons together. along four sides of the hexagons.

Insert the plastic ring

Sew the remaining two sides together.

Weave in and clip all remaining ends.

Your button will look like this.

For the , a piece of yarn, about 10” long.

Insert the needle through the center of the bottom to the top, slightly off-centered.

Work the first half of a cross stitch, across the center of the button (2 threads over, 2 down)

At the bottom, come out near the center, but always at least one thread away from the previous stitch.

The finished cross stitch and the top of the button will look like this.

To work the shank of the button, make a few square knots on top of each other. We made 3 square knots for the example button, make more or less as desired.

A shank with 3 sets of square knots will look like this.

You will use the tails to attach the button to the fabric (Yay, no-sew buttons!).

Use a hook or needle to pull the first button tail through the fabric.

Pull the second tail through the fabric the same way, but not through the same hole.

On the back of the fabric, secure the ends with another square knot.

Weave in ends or clip, leaving end of about ½”.

Enjoy your button (and make many more)!
