THESIS COMMITTEE Chairperson ii Abstract Using the polygonal finite rotation method (PFRM) in conjunction with the hotspot- ting technique, a model of Pacific absolute plate motion (APM) from 65 Ma to the present has been created. This model is based primarily on the Hawaiian-Emperor and Louisville hotspot trails but also incorporates the Cobb, Bowie, Kodiak, Foundation, Caroline, Mar- quesas and Pitcairn hotspot trails. Using this model, distinct changes in Pacific APM have been identified at 48, 27, 23, 18, 12 and 6 Ma. These changes are reflected as kinks in the linear trends of Pacific hotspot trails. The sense of motion and timing of a number of circum-Pacific tectonic events appear to be correlated with these changes in Pacific APM. With the model and discussion presented here it is suggested that Pacific hotpots are fixed with respect to one another and with respect to the mantle. If they are moving as some paleomagnetic results suggest, they must be moving coherently in response to large-scale mantle flow. iii List of Tables 4.1 Initial hotspot locations .

Therefore, seamounts can only exist where there are sea beds more than one kilo- metre deep, or, which is one and the same thing, over 60%–62% of the land surface1. There are also thousands of smaller elevations that tend to be known as abyssal hills (when they are less than 500 metres) or mounds (between 500 and 1,000 metres). Whether in isolation or as part of extensive ranges, there are possibly more than 100,000 sea- mounts around the world2. At present, close to 30,000 of them have been identified, of which around 1,000 can be found in the Atlantic Ocean3, where in addition the largest range in the world can be found; the Mid–Atlantic Ridge, which stretches from Iceland to the Antarctic.

    Chapter 36C. North Pacific Ocean Contributors: Thomas Therriault (Convenor), Chul Park and Jake Rice (Co-Lead members and editors for Part VI Biodiversity) 1. Introduction The Pacific is the largest division of the World Ocean, at over 165 million km2, extending from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south (Figure 1). Along the western margin are several seas. The Strait of Malacca joins the Pacific and the Indian Oceans to the west, and the Drake Passage and the Strait of Magellan link the Pacific with the Atlantic Ocean to the east. To the north, the Bering Strait connects the Pacific with the Arctic Ocean (International Hydrographic Organization, 1953). The Pacific Ocean is further subdivided into the North Pacific and South Pacific; the equator represents the dividing line. The North Pacific includes the deepest (and, until recently, the least explored) place on Earth, the Mariana Trench, which extends to almost 11 km below the ocean’s surface, although the average depth of the North Pacific is much less, at approximately 4.3 km. Thus, the North Pacific encompasses a wide variety of ecosystems, ranging from tropical to arctic/sub-arctic with a wide diversity of species and habitats. Further, the volcanism that creates the “rim of fire” around the Pacific has resulted in unique undersea features, such as hydrothermal vents (including the Endeavor Hydrothermal Vents) and seamount chains (including the Hawaiian-Emperor Seamount Chain). Both create unique habitats that further enhance biodiversity in the North Pacific. The continental shelves around the North Pacific tend to be very narrow with highly variable productivity, with the exception of the continental shelf of the Bering Sea, which is one of the largest and most productive in the World Ocean (Miles et al., 1982).

Drill core and seismic reflection data are used to classify sediment at the drill sites as having been either accumulating or eroding/non- depositing in the recent geological past. When those classified sites are compared against predictions of a numerical model of the modern internal tidal wave field (Simmons, 2008), the sites accumulating particles over the past few million years are found to lie away from beams of the modeled internal tide, while those that have not been accumulating are in internal tide beams. Given the correspondence to the modern internal wave field, we examine whether internal tides can explain ancient hiatuses at the drill sites.

Dziak Cooperative Institute for Marine Resources Studies, Oregon State University/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, HMSC, Newport, Oregon 97365, USA [1] Full-coverage multibeam bathymetric mapping of twelve seamounts in the Gulf of Alaska reveals that they are characterized by flat-topped summits (rarely with summit craters) and by terraced, or step-bench, flanks. These summit plateaus contain relict volcanic features (e.g., flow levees, late-stage cones, and collapse craters) and as such must have been constructed by volcanic processes such as lava ponding above a central vent, rather than by erosion above sea level. The terraced flanks are composed of a sequence of stacked lava deltas and cones, probably tube-fed from a central lava pond, a morphology which is suggestive of long-lived, stable central lava sources and low to moderate eruption rates, indicative of significant time spent above a hot spot outlet.
