  • How Japanese Comic Books Influence Taiwanese Students A
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reading Comic Books Critically: How Japanese Comic Books Influence Taiwanese Students A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Education by Fang-Tzu Hsu 2015 © Copyright by Fang-Tzu Hsu 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reading Comic Books Critically: How Japanese Comic Books Influence Taiwanese Students by Fang-Tzu Hsu Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Carlos A. Torres, Chair Education knows no boundaries but hot button topics, like comic books, demonstrate school, teacher and parent limitations. Japanese comic books (manga) are a litmus test of pedagogical tolerance. Because they play an important role in the lives of most Taiwanese teenagers, I give them pride of place in this dissertation. To understand Japanese comic books and their influence, I use Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy to combine perspectives from cultural studies, comparative education, and educational sociology. With the cooperation of the administration, faculty and students of a Taiwanese junior high school, I used surveys, a textual analysis of five student-selected titles and interviews with students and educators. I discovered that Japanese manga contain complex and sometimes contradictory ideologies of ethnicity, gender, class, and violence. From an ethnic perspective, although students may glean cultural content from manga heroes and their retinues, people of color and non-Japanese Asians are either caricatures or non-existent; although Taiwanese teenager readers seem unaware of this. From a gender standpoint, neither the female characters’ provocative representation nor the male characters’ slavering responses to it raise students’ and teachers’ concerns.

  • Exploring the Cultural Phenomenon of Language in Japanese Band Names
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE 135 Hey! Say! JUMP: Exploring the cultural phenomenon of Language in Japanese band names Lee, Jackson Koon Yat & A.R.Woollock Abstract In Japan, English-language usage in the public sphere, from advertising through popular music, general media, and signage runs a gamut of uses and accuracies from the intentional and unintentional misuse, to the irreverent and the occasional sublime. This paper sets out to explore and record the use of English in the naming of Japanese pop and rock groups. The central thesis of this essay being that Japanese pop and rock group names fall into five distinct categories or phenomena: meaningless names using language other than Japanese, arbitrary names from second languages, bastardised 'other' language derivatives, Romanised Japanese, and mixed Japanese and other language. This grouping ignores those names rendered in kan-ji, which although acknowledged, are not specifically within the scope of this research. By deconstructing and analysing this use, it is hoped to contribute to discourse in the fields of both culture (cultural appropriation), and language (language use and accuracy). Keywords Japanese popular music, Japan, English Language, Wa-sei ei-go, Japanese culture [email protected] 136 Lee, Jackson Koon Yat & A.R.Woollock Introduction Glancing through the racks in your local Japanese music shop or rental store, the native speaker of English will be greeted with an array of Japanese band names which span the spectrum of use and comprehension from the expected and the mundane, through to the questionable and the incomprehensible.

  • Giappone E Il Panico Morale Analisi Di Subculture Giovanili Ritenute Problematiche E L’Evoluzione Dell’Immagine Pubblica Attraverso I Media

Most of the tickets of famous artists are sold through their fan clubs’ pre- order lottery system at uniform prices instead of through third-party platforms at different prices. Such a strategy seems counterintuitive, as entertainment firmsmay explore additional profitability by making seats publicly available and varying ticket price with seat quality. By forming two theoretical models, we explore the pricing strategy of Japanese firms from two aspects: habit formation process and random seating assignment. From the first model, we conclude that, with habit formation, firms’ overall optimal prices are lower than the first period optimal prices. Fromthe second model, we find that random seating assignment with uniform price always yields less revenue than price differentiation. This result suggests that Japanese firms might use lotteries due to reasons other than profit maximization in the primary market. 4 JAPANESE LIVE-CONCERT MARKET 1. Introduction For consumers outside of Japan, buying a concert ticket is simply one click on main- stream ticket service websites such as Ticketmaster.

The rise of interest in heavy metal academically reflects the growth of the genre as a normal or con- tested part of everyday lives around the globe. The aim of this series is to provide a home and focus for the growing number of monographs and edited collections that analyse heavy metal and other heavy music; to publish work that fits within the emergent subject field of metal music studies; that is, work that is critical and inter-disciplinary across the social sciences and humanities; to publish work that is of interest to and enhances wider disciplines and subject fields across social sciences and the humanities; and to support the development of early career researchers through providing opportunities to convert their doctoral theses into research monographs.
