DEDICATION To Mom and Dad, who have been a constant source of love and support (even if they don’t always understand what my research is about). Absolutely none of this would’ve happened without everything you have done and sacrificed for me. I love you both so much. To my friends, Chelsea, Claire, and Kevin who have been my cheerleading squad, my therapists, and my distractions when I needed a break. I’m truly so very lucky to have friends as amazing and wonderful as you. And to my cat, Lucifer, who can’t read this dedication, but works very hard at being a good boy and a skilled cuddle buddy. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my sincerest appreciation to my thesis committee (Dr. Audwin Anderson, Dr. Lijun Yuan, and Dr. Peter Siegenthaler) for their flexibility, guidance, and support throughout the writing and research process. In particular, I would like to thank Dr. Anderson for his counsel and for always being available whenever I needed to talk. I would like to thank Dr. Siegenthaler for being the original catalyst for this research. Without the motivation he sparked back in undergrad, this thesis likely would not have evolved into what it is now. And I would like to thank Dr. Yuan for her enthusiasm throughout this entire process and for taking a chance on me despite not knowing me before this thesis. I would also like to thank those in the Center for International Studies and Graduate College, particularly Dr. Sandhya Rao who inspired me to pursue my research interests and who helped me break through the barriers of imposter syndrome. Without her encouragement, I do not think I would’ve challenged myself to pursue some of the goals I previously thought out of reach. I would likewise like to thank Jeremy Peña who has helped me every of the step of the way, even before I applied to the Master’s program. Finally, I would like to thank my friends who cheered me on, my supervisor, Manda Anderson, who helped me juggle work and school, and my parents who have always loved and supported me. v TABLE OF CONTENTS Page ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ..............................................................................................................v LIST OF TABLES ............................................................................................................................ viii LIST OF FIGURES ...........................................................................................................................ix LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS ........................................................................................................... x ABSTRACT .........................................................................................................................................xi CHAPTER I. • JKT48 As the New Wave of Japanization in Indonesia Rizky Soraya Dadung Ibnu Muktiono English Department, Universitas Airlangga
JKT48 as the New Wave of Japanization in Indonesia Rizky Soraya Dadung Ibnu Muktiono English Department, Universitas Airlangga Abstract This paper discusses the cultural elements of JKT48, the first idol group in Indonesia adopting its Japanese sister group‘s, AKB48, concept. Idol group is a Japanese genre of pop idol. Globalization is commonly known to trigger transnational corporations as well as to make the spreading of cultural value and capitalism easier. Thus, JKT48 can be seen as the result of the globalization of AKB48. It is affirmed by the group management that JKT48 will reflect Indonesian cultures to make it a unique type of idol group, but this statement seems problematic as JKT48 seems to be homogenized by Japanese cultures in a glance. Using multiple proximities framework by La Pastina and Straubhaar (2005), this study aims to present the extent of domination of Japanese culture occurs in JKT48 by comparing cultural elements of AKB48 and JKT48. The author observed the videos footages and conducted online survey and interviews to JKT48 fans. The research shows there are many similarities between AKB48 and JKT48 as sister group. It is then questioned how the fans achieved proximity in JKT48 which brings foreign culture and value. The research found that JKT48 is the representation of AKB48 in Indonesia with Japanese cultural values and a medium to familiarize Japanese culture to Indonesia. Keywords: JKT48, AKB48, idol group, multiple proximities, homogenization Introduction “JKT48 will reflect the Indonesian cultures to fit as a new and unique type of idol group”. (JKT48 Operational Team, 2011) “JKT48 will become a bridge between Indonesia and Japan”.

ISSUE NO. 55 December 2010 - January 2011 The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur Sensational Duo YOSHIDA BROTHERS Coming to KL! The sensational Yoshida Brothers have been making waves all over the world and are finally coming to Kuala Lumpur. Presented by The Actors Studio and The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan and with the support of JT International Berhad, Yoshida Brothers will be performing at The Actors Studio@Lot 10 from 21 to 23 January 2011. Traditional art forms around the world have come to a crossroads. Faced with stiff competition from mainstream popular culture, as well as a decline in audience and general interest in traditional art forms, many are struggling to preserve their cultural heritage. There are some who have taken traditional art forms to a whole new level where today’s audience, particularly the younger generation, can relate to it and appreciate it. After all, it is all about accessibility. One such group is the Yoshida Brothers, comprising 33-year-old Ryoichiro Yoshida and 31-year-old Kenichi Yoshida. At the age of five, both started learning the shamisen, which is a three-stringed traditional Japanese instrument. After sweeping prizes at national Tsugaru shamisen conventions, the brothers made their major debut in 1999. Their debut album sold over 100,000 copies, which is an extraordinary figure for a traditional folk music release. The Yoshida Brothers went on to develop their own unique blend of the Tsugaru-jamisen style fused with Western and other regional music influences. Crowned the ‘new masters of the Shamisen’ by J-Pop World, the duo recently released a “Best of Yoshida Brothers” album, and they continue to tour extensively in Japan and internationally in the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Taiwan, gaining legions of fans along the way.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reading Comic Books Critically: How Japanese Comic Books Influence Taiwanese Students A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Education by Fang-Tzu Hsu 2015 © Copyright by Fang-Tzu Hsu 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reading Comic Books Critically: How Japanese Comic Books Influence Taiwanese Students by Fang-Tzu Hsu Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Carlos A. Torres, Chair Education knows no boundaries but hot button topics, like comic books, demonstrate school, teacher and parent limitations. Japanese comic books (manga) are a litmus test of pedagogical tolerance. Because they play an important role in the lives of most Taiwanese teenagers, I give them pride of place in this dissertation. To understand Japanese comic books and their influence, I use Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy to combine perspectives from cultural studies, comparative education, and educational sociology. With the cooperation of the administration, faculty and students of a Taiwanese junior high school, I used surveys, a textual analysis of five student-selected titles and interviews with students and educators. I discovered that Japanese manga contain complex and sometimes contradictory ideologies of ethnicity, gender, class, and violence. From an ethnic perspective, although students may glean cultural content from manga heroes and their retinues, people of color and non-Japanese Asians are either caricatures or non-existent; although Taiwanese teenager readers seem unaware of this. From a gender standpoint, neither the female characters’ provocative representation nor the male characters’ slavering responses to it raise students’ and teachers’ concerns.
