Board of Directors

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to welcome you to the Globe’s 2009 Summer Shakespeare Festival, where once more, we proudly bring you three plays in repertory under the stars in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. Our Shakespeare Festival is an international phenomenon, attracting visitors from all 50 states and 19 countries. An important component of the Shakespeare Festival is the education and community programs offered to theater-goers of all ages. The Shakespeare Initiatives are designed to enhance understanding and enjoyment of the plays presented — from Insights Seminars, Garden Lectures and Post-show Forums to the Summer Shakespeare Intensive for high-school students. We hope you’ll be able to participate in the programs that your contributions have made possible. And finally, as you walk through our beautiful new Copley Plaza, you’ll undoubtedly notice the personalized granite pavers gracing the center of the large concentric circles on the redesigned Plaza. I want to take a moment to thank our many paver patrons for playing a critical role in our historic Capital Campaign, while pledging continuing support to our Annual Fund. We are deeply grateful for their generosity in helping to secure the future of The Old Globe – San Diego’s great cultural landmark. Once more, on behalf of the Globe’s Board of Directors, I thank you for your support of this great organization. Enjoy the Festival!

Production Sponsors

Karen and Donald Cohn PRODUCTION SPONSOR FOR CYRANO DE BERGERAC Karen and Donald Cohn have attended Globe productions for the past 28 years and have been actively involved with the Theatre in leadership roles for 17 of those years. Karen currently serves as Co-Chair of the Globe’s Capital and Endowment Campaign – Securing a San Diego Landmark. She and Don helped launch the Campaign in 2006 by making a significant gift, and in recognition, the new education center complex will be named The Karen and Donald Cohn Education Center. Karen first joined the Globe’s Board of Directors in 1992, has served two terms as Board President (1996-1998), and has co-chaired four of the Globe’s most successful Galas. Don has been a long-time member of the Globe’s Board of Directors, and currently holds the position of Chair of the Board. As Production Sponsors, the Cohns have generously supported Othello, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, Twelfth Night, Blue/Orange, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Doctor is Out, Wonderful Tennessee, Restoration Comedy and All’s Well That Ends Well.

John A. Berol PRODUCTION SPONSOR FOR TWELFTH NIGHT Having previously enjoyed Shakespeare at school and on stage, John Berol was delighted to discover San Diego’s enthusiasm for Shakespeare in Balboa Park upon moving to the city in 1977. Aware of the fragile dependence of artistically driven theater upon charitable support from individuals, John joyfully joined in with contributions including sponsorship of Dancing at Lughnasa, Voir Dire, Labor Day, Twelfth Night, Pericles, Much Ado About Nothing, The Two Noble Kinsmen, The Winter’s Tale, Titus Andronicus, Measure for Measure and The Merry Wives of Windsor.

American Express PRODUCTION SPONSOR FOR CORIOLANUS American Express Philanthropy’s mission is to bring to life the American Express value of good corporate citizenship by supporting diverse communities in ways that enhance the company’s reputation with employees, customers, business partners and other stakeholders. A long-time supporter of The Old Globe, recent support is provided through its funding theme to preserve and enrich our diverse cultural heritage. In 2007, American Express supported A Catered Affair, which was originally created by Paddy Chayefsky as a NBC teleplay in 1955 and premiered as a musical 50 years later at the Globe. This year, American Express has provided the Globe with a grant for Coriolanus, one of Shakespeare’s least-performed tragedies.

Kathryn Hattox PRODUCTION SPONSOR FOR CYRANO DE BERGERAC In 1997, Kathryn joined The Old Globe Board of Directors and currently serves as Immediate Past Chair, and on the Executive, Finance, Endowment and Capital Campaign Committees. In recognition of her leadership gift to the Campaign, the multi- purpose performance and training space located in the new Education Center will carry the name of Hattox Hall. Kathryn has generously supported the Globe each year as a Production Sponsor for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Comedy of Errors, Lucky Duck, Rough Crossing, All My Sons, The Boswell Sisters, As You Like It, Thunder Knocking on the Door, Measure for Measure, and All’s Well That Ends Well.

Barbara and Neil Kjos PRODUCTION SPONSOR FOR TWELFTH NIGHT Barbara and Neil have been enthusiastic and loyal patrons of The Old Globe since the summer of 1973, after moving to San Diego from . Their love of Shakespeare originally drew them to the Globe, so it is fitting that they are providing support for this year’s Festival. They have been long-time arts advocates in the San Diego community and regularly attend and support the San Diego Opera, San Diego Symphony, La Jolla Playhouse, La Jolla Music Society and San Diego Repertory Theatre, among others. Now retired, Neil owned and operated the enormously successful Neil A. Kjos Music Company, which continues to set the standard in all areas of the educational music publishing industry. Barbara and Neil’s sons, Mark and Tim, now maintain the family business and have inherited their parents love of the arts.

Some which a young person discovers a passion for theater while don’t know from whence their passions sprang but they know performing under the starry skies above our theatre. What that the work they do is not just a job but is a part of who better way to spend a summer evening? Please join us on they are. August 17th at 8:00pm for this important performance. It is a gift to be able to work with young people who are discovering their passion and The Old Globe’s education staff For more information about The Old Globe’s Education has the great good fortune to do that on a regular basis. Our programs please contact: Roberta Wells-Famula, Director of Student Matinee program allows us to go directly to the Education, [email protected] classrooms where students may have their first introduction to the world of theater through us. What a pleasure that is! We also get to work in drama classes that are alive with students who have already discovered theater and have found that they must make it a part of their lives whether as artists or audience members. One of the most exciting opportunities we have, though, is to provide the chance for a particular group of students who are so motivated to build their theater knowledge and skill that they are willing to spend four weeks of their summer vacations in the window-free rehearsal halls of The Old Globe. These are the students who want to experience theater as the professionals do, so they audition for our Summer Shakespeare Intensive for Teens. Okay, the program is fun and the students get to perform a production of one of Shakespeare’s plays on our outdoor Lowell Davies Festival stage (not such a bad way to spend your summer vacation). And, yes, they get to meet and study with many of the professional actors who grace the stage during our Shakespeare Festival season (pretty exciting, actually). But THE SUMMER SHAKESPEARE INTENSIVE FOR TEENS: A GREAT WAY TO SPEND THE SUMMER.

RECOGNIZING TALENTED TEENS

Every year high schools around the nation spend months rehearsing for their theater departments’ annual productions. Schools present dramas, comedies, musicals, one-acts and other shorter presentations. Some schools have relatively large budgets for such productions but most operate on a shoestring and must use creativity and sheer force of will to get these shows on their feet. Theater teachers mentor and guide their students from that first day of Introduction to Drama (the class the freshmen take because they think it’ll be a snap) to the final production and the moment the students find out what a thrill it is to perform in front of an audience. High school plays give students of all backgrounds an opportunity to perform. Many students do it simply because it’s fun but others do it because they have a genuine desire to have a career in theater. These highly motivated students usually perform in every show and by their junior year they have begun the search for a college program that will help JUDGE PAIGE DAVIS, WINNER EMMA STRATTON, AND them to achieve their dreams. OLD GLOBE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER LOU SPISTO The Old Globe has created a new initiative to recognize these very talented and motivated students. Globe Honors is an open call audition for musical theater students on April 11, an awards program that provides a an opportunity to audition 2009. Students from schools around the County converged before a team of judges for a chance to win scholarships and on the Globe’s rehearsal halls to sing songs from their high more. This type of competitive programming is not unusual in school musicals for the chance to move on to the Globe the dance and music worlds but theater students have a Honors finals. Our judges were amazed at the maturity and harder time getting the high-level notice they need for their professional attitudes of these talented hopefuls. college applications and professional resumes. From the original pool of applicants the finalists were Globe Honors was introduced to San Diego students with selected and invited to attend the Finals on April 25th. Each student sang two songs for our judges. What a great experience it was for the students to have the opportunity to audition for The Old Globe’s casting director, Samantha Barrie; San Diego State University’s Rick Simas; and Broadway and television actress, Paige Davis. The winner of the 2009 Globe Honors awards program, Emma Stratton of Canyon Crest Academy, received an all- expense paid trip to New York to compete in the brand new National High School Musical Theatre Awards in June. Maddie Shea Baldwin of Francis W. Parker School and Melissa Barnum of Rancho Bernardo High School both received $500 scholarships from The Old Globe. In 2010, Globe Honors will be expanded to include categories for Musical Theatre, Drama, Shakespeare and Technical Theatre. Watch for news about this wonderful new program that honors San Diego’s amazing high school talent.
