    Christiana Herringham (8 December 1852–25 February 1929) Meaghan Clarke Artist, writer, and suffragist, Christiana Herringham (Fig. 1) is primarily known as one of the founders of the National Art Collections Fund in 1903, along with the art writers Roger Fry, D. S. MacColl, and Claude Phillips, with the goal of acquiring works for the nation. Herringham had studied at the South Kensington School of Art and exhibited her early work at the Royal Academy. She married the physician Wilmot Herringham in 1880; Fig. 1: Christiana Herringham, c. 1906–11, photograph, Archives, Royal Holloway, University of London. 2 they had two sons. In 1899 she published the first English translation of Cennino Cennini’s Il libro dell’arte with notes on medieval artistic materials and methods. The latter derived largely from her own scientific experi- ments to replicate the techniques and recipes of early Renaissance tempera (egg yolk mixed with pigment). In 1901 she was one of a group of artists who exhibited ‘modern paintings’ in tempera at Leighton House, London, forming the Society of Painters in Tempera later that year. Society members exhibited again at the Carfax Gallery, London in 1905 and Herringham edited the Papers of the Society of Painters in Tempera, 1901–1907, which included her analysis of paintings in the collection of London’s National Gallery. TheBurlington Magazine was founded in 1903 and she served on its consultative committee. She published regularly with the journal over the next decade on a range of topics that encompassed the market for old masters, Albrecht Dürer, the proposed restoration of the basilica of San Marco, Venice, and Persian car- pets.

A few years ago, I met some accomplished Gond artists in Delhi and really liked their art and the history behind it. Subsequent reading and a visit to Bhopal revealed a lot. The legendary artist J. Swamintahan recognised the importance of the indigenous arts within the contemporary framework, which eventually lead to the establishment and development of institutions like Bharat Bhavan, IGRMS and Tribal Museum. Over the decades, may art forms have been lost to time and it is important to keep the surviving ones alive.

    CHAPTER-II EARLY PHASE OF SATIRICAL ART IN BENGAL 2.1 INTRODUCTION In this chapter, the research deals with some essential quarries of origin of satirical impulse in art and activities in the 19th century Calcutta, as the market for art started expanding, thanks to the processes of urbanization, the rural folk traditions of pat painting transformed in the hands of the migrant artists to produce water-colours (they used gouache and tempera) of Hindu gods and goddesses as well as to address the unprecedented diversity of urban life. As a result, many of these Kalighat paintings (as the art-practice came to be known) described, using their signature bold lines and colorations, some of the city‟s most popular scandals. Most importantly, they took satirical pot-shots at the sanctimoniousness of the city‟s middle-classes. One can, in fact, trace the obsession with the dandyish and dissolute Babu figure in the early 20th century art to many of the searing images produced by these patuas. The Bat-tala prints and wood-cuts also explored the same themes, targeting the lascivious courtesan and the effeminate Babu with equal ardour. (Sardesai:2003) The historical study of the evolution of satirical images cannot be done without including the patachitras, an art that had an exclusive position in the world of art in Bengal. While speaking of patachitras what instantly comes to our mind is the school of kalighat patachitras. Satire has been a part of traditional culture in Bengal since a long time. The various traditional practises like bolan in rahr Bengal, gombhira of north Bengal, jhumur incorporated in their performances an element of satire.

BOWMAN, III* Introduction: Why British Impeachments Matter Impeachment is a British invention, employed by Parliament beginning in 1376 to resist the general tendency of the monarchy to absolutism and to counter particularly obnoxious royal policies by removing the ministers who implemented them. The invention crossed the Atlantic with the British colonists who would one day rebel against their mother country and create an independent United States of America. During the Constitutional Convention of 1787, the delegates decided that presidents and other federal officers could be impeached, but they recoiled from the severe and occasionally fatal punishments imposed by Parliament, and they wrestled over what conduct should be impeachable.

We posit an implicit relational contract between the colonizing British and the landowning class in colonial Bengal as a way to understand the concurrent evolution of fishing rights and institutions of governance in the region. The system of incentives created by this contract determined the development of fishing rights at a crucial moment in the history of colonial Bengal and, more broadly, became a primary mechanism of institutional change in the region. The analysis also shows the Calcutta High Court to have acted, albeit in vain, as a truly independent judiciary.     Reclaiming the Indigenous Style of Kalighat Paintings Lauren M. Slaughter This essay re-examines the nature of Kalighat painting, a painting style which emerged in India in the early nineteenth century and ended not long after the early twentieth century. Stemming from traditional Indian scroll painting, Kalighat paintings were created by patuas who migrated from Bengal villages into Calcutta and set up their “shop- studios” around the Kalighat temple (Guha-Thakurta, Making 17; Jain 9). Patuas represent a caste of traveling scroll-painters and performers; the earliest mention of this artisan caste appears in Brahma Vaivarta Purana, a thirteenth-century Sanskrit text (Chatterjee 50). As a result of W. G. Archer’s 1953 Bazaar Paintings of Calcutta: The Style of Kalighat, the general consensus of scholarly literature suggests that Kalighat painting reflects a western influence on thepatua artists. In line with the work of Tapati Guha-Thakurta and B.N. Mukherjee, however, I want to argue that there is not enough evidence to support the claim that this style was shaped by contact with western painting; instead I will argue that it was essentially indigenous in style, medium, and subject matter. Because stating that Kalighat paintings are British-derived diminishes their value and robs these works of their true substance, my aim is to substantiate their indigenous origins and, in so doing, explain how this re-interpretation provides new ways of understanding the innovative style of Kalighat patuas.
