Career Focus – Social Worker

Social workers help people to deal with personal and social problems, either directly or by planning or carrying out programmes that benefit groups or communities. They are interested in challenging the structural barriers that contribute to inequality, discrimination, exploitation and oppression within communities.

Social workers can specialise in a range of different practice areas such as; children and family, youth, violence and sexual assault, medical and health, child protection, income support, disability, education, aged care, correctional services, family law, youth justice, community legal, psychiatric and general mental health, refugees and migrants and indigenous communities. They are employed in a variety of community and welfare fields across state, territory and federal government departments; hospitals, community health centres, local government authorities or non-government organisations. Some social workers are self-employed, working as counsellors, therapists and consultants. With the broad academic and practical training, qualified social workers may also work in non-social work areas such as project officers, policy makers, managers or administrators.

Within the different areas that social workers can work, their responsibilities can include: • Provide counselling and support through a crisis that may be due to death, illness, relationship breakdown or other reasons. • Provide clients with information about services that can assist them. • Provide letters of referral or reports that will help clients to obtain other services such as crisis accommodation or social security benefits. • Guide small groups of people to share their experiences, support each other and learn social skills. • Assist community groups to plan and carry out programs to help themselves (for example, assisting groups to form an association). • Research community problems, needs and solutions through client contact and records of welfare and health agencies. • Analyse statistics and write reports. • Develop policy and evaluate programs. • Manage and train staff. • Attend professional meetings. • Lobby to change social welfare policies and procedures in the pursuit of social justice for all members of the community.

To work in this field, it is important to have: • Emotional maturity. • Keen analytical abilities. • Ability to view other people’s problems objectively. • Good organisational and communication skills. • An ability to work independently or as part of a team. • A commitment to social justice.

To become qualified as a social worker, you usually have to complete a degree in social work at university. To gain entry into these courses you usually need to gain your VCE with English. However, you will need to contact your chosen institutions for course requirements and further information.

Career Profile – Social Worker

Name: Rachael

Can you tell us where you studied, how long your course duration was and where you undertook your work placement to become qualified as a Social Worker? In 2005 I graduated from Edith Cowan University in WA with a Bachelor of Education. Then in 2010 I completed my Master’s Degree in Social Work. After that I became a contracted case manager for DHHS under Wesley Family Services for young people in foster care and residential care. I was also responsible for recruitment and assessment of foster carers.

Whilst you were studying at secondary school, did you know the Social Work is what you wanted to get into? In secondary school, I wanted to be a nurse but I have a learning challenge with numbers so Sciences and Math’s was very challenging. My second choice was childcare. In my gap year, I went to East Africa for 6 months and came back home wanting to teach under privileged and ESL (English as a second language) students. I soon realised during my Education Degree that teaching in Australia wasn’t for me but kept at it. After my Bachelor study, I worked in various diverse roles before finally getting into residential care and I loved it.

What do you love about your job? I’m in a different field again now that works for my family, but when I worked as a social worker I loved the diversity of my day. I loved the one on one time with the kids, building them up, being that person that believes they can make a life for themselves. I loved watching them succeed in school, work, relationships, I even loved being on call and being the one they thought to ring when everything seemed to be going wrong. I used to take all my kids camping on long weekends, DHHS own a holiday house that’s available for kids in care. We had a great time surfing and cooking. I’m still in contact with a lot of the kids that I worked with. So, relationships – they were what I loved about my job.

What personal requirements would you say are necessary in your position? I would say self-awareness and knowing when to take a step back and take care of yourself is really important. I would also say unconditional positive regard for your clients is crucial. Social Workers need to be able to separate behavior from the person, understanding that humans are a product of their DNA, environment and nurture. Also having a good understanding of social role valorisation theory - that the client be the knower, social workers are just a safety net and guide when asked. It’s also essential to be professional, confidentiality is key as well as complete transparency in regards to client contact. Case notes are a legal requirement and can be subpoena’ d, so you can be called to court cases.

What are the challenges of your job and the best ways to overcome those challenges? The challenges are in the bureaucracy, but with perseverance and a healthy relationship with the right people anything is possible. Also, emotionally it’s a challenge to be unattached. Social Work can be difficult in the long term if you’re a person who really cares, you can burn out so self-care is paramount.
