Despite the challenges we and the industry are facing, we are optimistic about 2021. This is because we love cinema and good films and series – and particularly in these difficult times, they are also some thing that is needed by audiences around the world. Time and again in recent years, German feature films and series have succeeded in captivating viewers abroad, and we are confident that this will be the case in 2021 as well. In particular, the new wave of German documentaries is establishing itself increasingly as a favourite with international audiences. We are just as proud of the German Films campaign FACE TO FACE, which has been in existence for six years now, and delighted that we will be able to continue it with a great new pool of talent in 2021 – despite the difficult current conditions. Films and series are created through the work of a large team, which is why we have decided to highlight a greater diversity of film professions in 2021 and are proudly presenting the premiere of our new faces in this issue of GFQ. German Films Quarterly will broaden its format in 2021: We will also open our publication to contri butions dealing with internationally controversial topics in the film industry.

  • Never Look Away
NEVER LOOK AWAY An original screenplay by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck 1. INT. DRESDEN ART MUSEUM – DAY KURT, a small 5-year-old boy with steel grey eyes gazes at the distorted, grimacing faces of soldiers from the hands of Otto Dix, the twisted colors and shapes of Kirchner, Heckel and Schmidt-Rottluff, the bizarre world of Paul Klee. At Kurt's side is his AUNT ELISABETH, an 19 year-old blonde of seductive beauty. They are part of a group of maybe two dozen adults, all ears to a self- confidently eloquent EXHIBITION GUIDE: GUIDE (nodding with regret) Modern art. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. Before the National Socialists took charge, Germany, too, had its share of "modern" art, meaning: something different just about every year - as follows from the word itself. Ironic chuckles from the audience. EXHIBITION GUIDE (CONT'D) But the Germany of National Socialism once again demands a German art which, like the entirety of a nation’s creative values, must be, and shall be, eternal. Bearing no such eternal value for its nation, it can be of no higher value even today. As they stroll past paintings of unconstrained prostitutes, yellow hydrocephalic heads, smirking captains of industry, African-style sculptures… EXHIBITION GUIDE (CONT'D) The German woman is ridiculed and equaled to prostitutes. The paintings appear to confirm this. EXHIBITION GUIDE (CONT'D) The soldier is portrayed either as a murderer or as the victim of senseless slaughter, all this in an attempt to destroy the German people’s deeply rooted respect for a soldier’s bravery.

It explores developments in recent German filmmaking in the context of the increasing globalisation of media industries and images and in the context of contemporary cinema’s relationship to other media forms. Stu- dents will explore the dynamics of recent German cinema, including its successes at major award ceremonies and at film festivals, its relationship to Hollywood and to other international cinemas, its distinct approach to questions of the audience, of auteurism and of production, and to transnational images, particularly con- cerning the emergence of Turkish-German filmmaking. Students will also address the representation of politics, terrorism, history, heritage and the national past, the engagement with issues of performance, gender and sexuality, the use of genre and popular commercial film styles, and the re-emergence of a ‘counter cinema’ in the work of the ‘Berlin School’ and after. Seminar work on current trends will allow students to work independently to research an individual case study of a chosen film and its significance to contemporary German cinema. • Visualizing Levinas:Existence and Existents Through Mulholland Drive
VISUALIZING LEVINAS: EXISTENCE AND EXISTENTS THROUGH MULHOLLAND DRIVE, MEMENTO, AND VANILLA SKY Holly Lynn Baumgartner A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2005 Committee: Ellen Berry, Advisor Kris Blair Don Callen Edward Danziger Graduate Faculty Representative Erin Labbie ii © 2005 Holly Lynn Baumgartner All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Berry, Advisor This dissertation engages in an intentional analysis of philosopher Emmanuel Levinas’s book Existence and Existents through the reading of three films: Memento (2001), Vanilla Sky (2001), and Mulholland Drive, (2001). The “modes” and other events of being that Levinas associates with the process of consciousness in Existence and Existents, such as fatigue, light, hypostasis, position, sleep, and time, are examined here. Additionally, the most contested spaces in the films, described as a “Waking Dream,” is set into play with Levinas’s work/ The magnification of certain points of entry into Levinas’s philosophy opened up new pathways for thinking about method itself. Philosophically, this dissertation considers the question of how we become subjects, existents who have taken up Existence, and how that process might be revealed in film/ Additionally, the importance of Existence and Existents both on its own merit and to Levinas’s body of work as a whole, especially to his ethical project is underscored. A second set of entry points are explored in the conclusion of this dissertation, in particular how film functions in relation to philosophy, specifically that of Levinas. What kind of critical stance toward film would be an ethical one? Does the very materiality of film, its fracturing of narrative, time, and space, provide an embodied formulation of some of the basic tenets of Levinas’s thinking? Does it create its own philosophy through its format? And finally, analyzing the results of the project yielded far more complicated and unsettling questions than they answered.

5 JUL 19 5 SEP 19 1 | 5 JUL 19 - 5 SEP 19 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT HOME OF THE EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Filmhouse, Summer 2019, Part II Luckily I referred to the last issue of this publication as the early summer double issue, which gives me the opportunity to call this one THE summer double issue, as once again we’ve been able to cram TWO MONTHS (July and August) of brilliant cinema into its pages. Honestly – and honesty about the films we show is one of the very cornerstones of what we do here at Filmhouse – should it become a decent summer weather-wise, please don’t let it put you off coming to the cinema, for that would be something of an, albeit minor in the grand scheme of things, travesty. Mind you, a quick look at the long-term forecast tells me you’re more likely to be in here hiding from the rain. Honestly…? No, I made that last bit up. I was at a world-renowned film festival on the south coast of France a few weeks back (where the weather was terrible!) seeing a great number of the films that will figure in our upcoming programmes. A good year at that festival invariably augurs well for a good year at this establishment and it’s safe to say 2019 was a very good year. Going some way to proving that statement right off the bat, one of my absolute favourites comes our way on 23 August, Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory which is simply 113 minutes of cinematic pleasure; and, for you, dear reader, I put myself through the utter bun-fight that was getting to see Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time..

  • Never Look Away German Artist Gerhard Richter (B. 1932) May Not
Never Look Away German artist Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) may not be a household name in the US, but he is renowned in the art world and has been called “the greatest living artist,” conducting, over a 65-year period, an amazingly protean career in every aspect of the visual arts. The beginnings of that career are the inspiration for a new movie, “Never Look Away,” made by director Florian von Donnersmarck. The filmmaker achieved renown with first film “The Lives of Others” (2006) which earned him, at age 33, an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, a category for which he is nominated again this year. An open question for moviegoers approaching von Donnersmark’s film (which he also wrote) is how much does one need to know about the real Richter to appreciate and assess the fictionalized version? The story, a complex one, begins in 1937 with a young Kurt Barnert (standing in for Richter) observing, with a beloved aunt, Elisabeth (Saskia Rosendahl), an exhibition of “degenerate art” mounted by the Nazis in Dresden. However. Elisabeth, a smart and sensitive sort, admires the modernistic works, passing along her taste to her nephew. Later, she is sterilized and killed by the Nazis because she is deemed schizophrenic. Her sterilization is carried out by Professor Carl Seeband (Sebastian Koch), an obstetrician and member of the SS. Switch to post-war Dresden where the young Kurt (Tom Schilling) begins to study painting at the city’s art school and meets and falls for Ellie Seeband (Paula Beer), daughter of the infamous doctor (unknown to Kurt) who has survived the war and become a dutiful, and successful, communist in East Germany.

A murderous conspiracy. A devastating catastrophe. Frankfurt, May 1937. The Hindenburg, the world's largest airship, is getting ready to fly to New York. A vehicle of staggering dimensions, it is the pride of Nazi Germany. But it has one serious flaw: due to an American embargo preventing the sale of helium to Germany, the Hindenburg is filled with highly combustible hydrogen gas instead. To Merten Kröger, an engineer who helped design the Hindenburg, the ship is a stick of dynamite waiting for a spark. The young man of great charm but modest means has fallen in love with the wealthy Jennifer van Zandt, the daughter of an American industrialist who wants to sell helium to the Germans. Just before the ship takes off, Merten learns how far the industrialist will go: he has had a bomb placed on the airship. What van Zandt didn't know is that his wife and daughter would be on board. Merten sneaks aboard the airship without a minute to spare. The young couple is reunited, and despite the great difference in class and social status between them, Jennifer, too, avows her love for Merten. He tells her of the bomb hidden somewhere on the airship. But there is little time for explanations, since Merten must flee: he is being sought for a murder he says he did not commit.
