Aesthetics As Resistance: Rasa, Dhvani, and Empire in Tamil “Protest” Theater
AESTHETICS AS RESISTANCE: RASA, DHVANI, AND EMPIRE IN TAMIL “PROTEST” THEATER BY DHEEPA SUNDARAM DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Palencia-Roth, Chair Professor Rajeshwari Pandharipande, Director of Research Professor Indira Viswanathan Peterson, Mount Holyoke College Associate Professor James Hansen Abstract Aesthetics as Resistance: Rasa, Dhvani, and Empire in Modern Tamil “Protest” Theater addresses questions concerning the role of aesthetics in the development, production, and impact of Tamil “Protest” Theater (1900-1930) on the success of the Indian anticolonial movement in the colonial Tamil state. In addition, I explore the possibility for a Modern Tamil aesthetic paradigm that arises from these syncretic plays, which borrow from both external and indigenous narrative and dramaturgical traditions. I begin with the following question, “Can aesthetic “relishing” (rasasvāda) be transformed into patriotic sentiment and fuel anticolonial resistance?” Utilizing Theodore Baskaran’s The Message Bearers, which examines the development and production of anticolonial media in the colonial Tamil state as point of departure, my research interrogates Tamil “popular” or “company” drama as a successful vehicle for evoking anticolonial sentiment. In this context, I posit the concept of “rasa- consciousness” as the audience’s metanarrative lens that transforms emotive cues and signposts in the dramatic work into sentiment through a process of aesthetic "remembering.” This lens is constituted through a complex interaction between culture, empire, and modernity that governs the spectator’s memorializing process. The culturally-determined aesthetic “lens” of Tamil spectator necessitates a culture-specific messaging system by anticolonial playwrights that links the dramatic outcome with feelings of nationalism and patriotism. -

Singapore Is “Country of Focus” at MIPTV2010 the Largest-Ever Singapore Contingent Will Showcase Over 224 Hours of Animation, Factual, Lifestyle and Drama Genres
News Release For Immediate Release Singapore is “Country of Focus” at MIPTV2010 The largest-ever Singapore contingent will showcase over 224 hours of animation, factual, lifestyle and drama genres. Singapore, 1 April 2010 – Singapore will take the spotlight at this year’s MIPTV as its “Country of Focus”. MIPTV is one of the world’s premier market place for the buying and selling of television programmes or films, negotiating digital content for IPTV channels and mobile operators in Cannes, France. This year’s MIPTV takes place from 12 April to 16 April 2010 and Acting Minister for Information, Communications, and the Arts (MICA) Mr Lui Tuck Yew will grace Singapore’s “Country of Focus” activities as its Guest-of-Honour. As the “Country of Focus”, Singapore will host a half-day conference called “Focus on Singapore” to promote Singapore content, capabilities and services and encourage more international co-productions and partnerships with Singapore companies. MIPTV typically attracts 11,000 international buyers, broadcasters and producers. In addition, the conference will provide insights through detailed case studies on Singapore media industry’s capabilities to produce and post-produce in stereoscopic 3D – a field that MDA is actively championing. Trade visitors to the Singapore Pavilion will be able to see this for themselves, as the Pavilion will display a prototype of a 3D racing game by Singapore company TQ Global. Other “Country of Focus” activities being planned are an exclusive VIP lunch on 12 April hosted by Mr Lui and a networking event on the evening of 13 April for exploring collaboration deals with leading Singapore producers on live-action, animation and 3D Stereoscopic projects. -
Mr Chee Hong Tat, Minister of State for Communications & Information at the Committee of Supply Debate on 11 Apr 2016
MR CHEE HONG TAT, MINISTER OF STATE FOR COMMUNICATIONS & INFORMATION AT THE COMMITTEE OF SUPPLY DEBATE ON 11 APR 2016 CONNECTING PEOPLE AND COMMUNITY INTRODUCTION 1. I will speak about MCI’s priorities in three areas: strengthening Public Service Broadcasting, enhancing government communications and translation, and expanding the role of design in our lives. PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING FOR A NEW AGE Importance of Public Service Broadcasting 2. Public Service Broadcasting, or PSB is an important part of our lives. PSB programmes not only entertain and educate Singaporeans, they also reflect our societal values, celebrate our local heritage, and help to shape the Singapore identity. News and current affairs programmes keep Singaporeans well-informed about the world around us, and unite Singaporeans with shared experiences. Page 1 of 16 For instance, we mourned as one during the National Mourning week last year, when our founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, passed away. And we cheered with one heart during our SG50 National Day Parade. 3. Only locally produced PSB programmes can have such effects. Foreign programmes will not reflect our local values and culture. Through PSB programmes, our media industry players can tell the Singapore story from a Singaporean perspective, with a Singaporean heart. PSB must be ready for a New Age 4. That is why the Government has long supported PSB, and indeed increased our funding for PSB in recent years. Like many other countries – Britain with the BBC, Japan with NHK – we recognise the importance of PSB. 5. In the last financial year, we provided $250 million of PSB funding, almost double the amount three years earlier. -
