THE BRITISH ANTIQUE DEALERS’ ASSOCIATION The Care of Antiques & Works of Art The Care of Antiques & Works of Art Antiques have been passed down by our ancestors over the centuries to our present generation, so by their very nature have stood the test of time. They may have taken a few knocks in those earlier ages, but surprisingly, despite all our 21st-century creature comforts, it is the modern world, with its central heating and chemical cleaning products, which poses particular challenges for such objects. You may have spent a considerable sum acquiring a beautiful and valuable antique, so you do not want to throw away that investment by failing to look after it. Half the battle is knowing just when to try and remedy a defect yourself and when to leave it to the experts. Here are some basic recommendations, compiled through extensive consultation with specialists who have the greatest experience of handling antiques on a daily basis – members of The British Antique Dealers’ Association. We hope this guide helps you to decide what to do, and when. INTERNATIONAL DIVISION As specialist fine art & antique Lloyd’s insurance brokers we are delighted to sponsor this BADA guide. 2015 International Nuclear Atlantic Conference - INAC 2015 São Paulo, SP, Brazil, October 4-9, 2015 ASSOCIAÇÃO BRASILEIRA DE ENERGIA NUCLEAR - ABEN ISBN: 978-85-99141-06-9 COLOR CHANGE OF GEMSTONES BY EXPOSURE TO GAMMA RAYS Giovanna L. C. de Lima1 and Fernando S. Lameiras2 1 Centro de Desenvolvimento da Tecnologia Nuclear (CDTN) Campus da UFMG - Pampulha Av. Antônio Carlos 6627 31270-901 Belo Horizonte, MG [email protected] 2 Centro de Desenvolvimento da Tecnologia Nuclear (CDTN) Campus da UFMG - Pampulha Av. Antônio Carlos 6627 31270-901 Belo Horizonte, MG [email protected] ABSTRACT A gem is appreciated by collectors and, when polished, widely used for jewelry manufacturing. For example, when quartz naturally or artificially acquires a color it becomes a gemstone (smoky quartz, morion, citrine, amethyst, or prasyolite). The presence of chromophore elements in a quartz sample was analysed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). With a semi-quantitative analysis of the absorption FTIR spectra, it was possible to predict if colorless quartz has the potential to develop color when exposed to ionizing radiation and heat. Specific absorption bands show the presence of chromophore elements in quartz such as aluminum, iron, hydrogen, sodium, or lithium. Considering the ratio of the heights of the absorption bands of these elements, it was possible to predict the color quartz can develop. Samples of irradiated dark and light violet fluorites were analyzed by FTIR and energy-dispersive X-rays spectroscopy. The light violet samples has higher content of calcium relative to fluorine, as well higher content of hydroxyl, probably replacing fluorine in crystal lattice.

  • Understanding the Importance of Color Matching Coding the Colors
When red is not red: Understanding the importance of color matching Color as brand Color is an integral part of branding. Whether it’s the robin’s egg blue box with jewelry inside, a green and yellow tractor or the white delivery truck with a purple and orange logo, we instinctively know brands by their colors. As a commercial printer, we understand that achieving accurate and consistent color results in everything we produce is vital in protecting the integrity of your brand. Color Color vs. perception reality Color perception is the way your eye Color reality is the scientific means of sees the color. Many factors can affect it matching a color. We have — the lighting, the environment, the type spectrophotometers that measure any of printer being used (toner-based or color visible to the human eye. inkjet), and even the eye of the beholder! We don’t all see color the same way. Color perception Color reality Lighting Environment Spectrophotometers Printer Your Eye Simply put, the red you see may not be the red you wanted. To match colors, we examine the color we want to achieve against the color we’ve printed to see how close they actually are. Our color management team works to get your color correct every time. Coding CMYK, which stands for “Cyan Magenta Yellow Black,” is primarily concerned with the combination of ink on the paper to produce the colors colors—in particular, the four basic colors used for printing color images. We combine these four colors on a substrate (the underlying surface), which is essentially the fifth color.

  • Bone, Antler, Ivory and Teeth (PDF)
Bone, Antler, Ivory, and Teeth Found in such items as tools, jewelry, and decorations Identification and General Information Items derived from skeletal materials are both versatile and durable. Bone, antler, ivory, and teeth have been used for various tools and for ornamentation. Because ivory is easily carved yet durable, it has also long been used by many cultures as a medium for recorded information. Bones and teeth from many different animals, including mammals, birds, and fish, may be found in items in all shapes and sizes. Each culture uses the indigenous animals in its region. Identifying bones and teeth used in an item can be easy or difficult, depending on how they were processed and used. Frequently, bones and teeth were minimally processed, and the surfaces are still visible, allowing identification by color (off-white to pale yellow), shape, and composition. Bird, fish, and reptile bones are usually lighter in mass and color than mammal bones. Bone and antler can be used in their natural form, or polished with sand and other abrasives to a very smooth and glossy surface. Bone is sometimes confused with ivory, which is also yellowish and compact. Sea mammal ivory, which is the prevalent source used by American Indians, is distinct in structure. Walrus ivory, the most common sea mammal ivory, has a dense outer layer and a mottled inner core. Bone and antler in archaeological collections are often burnt and can be blue black to whitish gray. Charred bone or antler can be mistaken for wood. Magnification helps to distinguish bone from similar materials, as it has a thin solid layer surrounding a porous interior structure with a hollow core where the marrow is contained.

  • The Wittelsbach-Graff and Hope Diamonds: Not Cut from the Same Rough
THE WITTELSBACH-GRAFF AND HOPE DIAMONDS: NOT CUT FROM THE SAME ROUGH Eloïse Gaillou, Wuyi Wang, Jeffrey E. Post, John M. King, James E. Butler, Alan T. Collins, and Thomas M. Moses Two historic blue diamonds, the Hope and the Wittelsbach-Graff, appeared together for the first time at the Smithsonian Institution in 2010. Both diamonds were apparently purchased in India in the 17th century and later belonged to European royalty. In addition to the parallels in their histo- ries, their comparable color and bright, long-lasting orange-red phosphorescence have led to speculation that these two diamonds might have come from the same piece of rough. Although the diamonds are similar spectroscopically, their dislocation patterns observed with the DiamondView differ in scale and texture, and they do not show the same internal strain features. The results indicate that the two diamonds did not originate from the same crystal, though they likely experienced similar geologic histories. he earliest records of the famous Hope and Adornment (Toison d’Or de la Parure de Couleur) in Wittelsbach-Graff diamonds (figure 1) show 1749, but was stolen in 1792 during the French T them in the possession of prominent Revolution.
