This study was designed to investigate OMPs using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for efficient management of non-point source pollution in agricul- tural areas. A UAV was used to acquire image data, and the distribution and cover installation status of OMPs were identified through ortho-images; the volumes of OMP were calculated using digital surface model (DSM). UAV- and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS)-derived DSMs were compared for identifying the accuracy of calculated volumes. The average volume accuracy was 92.45%. From April to October, excluding July, the monthly average volumes of OMPs in the study site ranged from 64.89 m3 to 149.69 m3. Among the 28 OMPs investigated, 18 were located near streams or agricultural waterways. Establishing priority management areas among the OMP sites distributed in a basin is possible using spatial analysis, and it is expected that the application of UAV technology will contribute to the efficient management of OMPs and other non-point source pollutants.

    Managing Wetland Complexity in the Anthropocene: The Upo Wetland Geulim Jun Department of Natural Resource Sciences McGill University Montreal, Quebec, Canada October 2014 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Science in Renewable Resources © Geulim Jun 2014 I Abstract Wetland loss continues to be one of the major drivers of global environmental change and, despite the plethora of studies conducted, the ecological condition of this ecosystem has not dramatically improved. Most wetland degradation is caused by human activities seeking profit- maximization that result in a general disregard for the complex properties of wetlands. This thesis analyzes management of Upo Wetland in Korea from a policy perspective, including the socio-ecological implications of wetland complexity. The theoretical framework is drawn from a literature review and the management policy literature. I first identify a theoretical framework for policy analysis that includes ecological, economic, and institutional wetland complexity dimensions. In the section on ecological complexity, I introduce and consider difficulties in explicitly understanding the nature of wetland. In the section on economic complexity, I address the theoretical misconceptions about managing wetland complexity under the current economic paradigm. The fundamental issue of the current economic system stems from the rejection of its subordinated relation with ecosystems and the limitations to market valuation approaches when dealing with nature. The socio-ecological implications to wetland institutions, including command and control, community-based, and market-based institution, are analyzed as well as their effectiveness in solving wetland ecosystem degradation at different scales. Based on these three dimensions of wetland ecosystems, I argue that the ecological complexity of Upo wetland reveals a limited understanding of the breath and span of wetland ecological functions.

Furthermore, demands for relaxation of “water supply area protection” regulations are increasing while expectations for clean water are raised, which has intensified regional conflicts to secure clean water. Nevertheless, it is difficult to build a new dam due to limitations of social acceptability, regional oppositions and more strict policies on building dam of the new government. Therefore, in order to effectively utilize the limited water resources in Korea, the development of alternative water resources is necessary. The primary purpose of this policy recommendation is to activate the alternative water resources.

    Preface A Message of Congratulations The defining characteristic of Korean Buddhism is its long tradition of Ganhwa Seon,1 or “word-contemplation meditation,” a tradition that is rarely found in any other country in the world. At present, every year about 2,000 monks practice this style of rigorous meditation, especially during the three-month long Summer and Winter retreats, at some one hundred Seon Halls around Korea. In the past, however, there were many difficult times in the tradition of Ganhwa Seon in our history, and it was the great Seon Master Gyeongheo (1846- 1912) who overcame these crises and restored the foundation of Korean 1 Seon is the Korean pronunciation of the character (禪), which in China is pronounced Chan, and in Japan, Zen. While these schools share a similar root, they have developed differently within each culture, and thus, we use the term Seon to represent the unique practice of the tradition in Korea. The Collected Writings of Gyeongheo 5 in the tradition of the mind-to-mind meditation practice of the Linji Order. The Master established a number of meditation centers at monasteries and temples, such as Cheonjang Monastery and Sudeok Temple in South Chungcheong Province, Beomeo Monastery in Busan, Haein Monastery in South Gyeongsang Province, and Songgwang and Hwaeom Monasteries in Cheolla Province. He also promoted the tradition of Seon by cultivating countless disciples, among them, the Master's chief Dharma disciples, Mangong Wolmyeon, Hyewol, Suwol, and Hanam. But, in fact, the Master was the teacher of countless Seon masters who contributed to the revival of Korean Buddhism in its modern history and who established the foundation of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the major Buddhist Order in Korea.
