Anahtar Kelimeler: Kemetizm, Kemetisizm, Neopaganizm, Paganizm, Yeni Dini Hareketler, Kemetic Orthodoxy, Mısıroloji, Antik Mısır iv ABSTRACT THE RITUALS AND BELIEFS OF NEOPAGAN KEMETIC MOVEMENTS ABDÜLHAMİT HÜZEYFE NAZİLLİ This thesis investigates the groups trying to revive the Ancient Egyptian religion throughout the 20th century as the Kemetic Orthodoxy, the Ausar Auset Society and the Church of the Most High Goddess and other minor Kemetic movements. Because there hadn’t been done a serious research on these kind of new religious movement before we came directly in contact with the Kemetics and went through the religious initiation processes for our research to be done correctly. For our thesis we used the websites in which the Kemetics write their religious views as well. In our thesis we try to find answer about what Kemetism really is and what his characteristics are. We found out that the Kemetics are divided into several disciplines in belief and in ritual. So we concluded that there are three different types of Kemetic movements: The Orthodox Kemetism who takes the Ancient Egyptian scriptures literally, the Reconstructionist Kemetism who adds into or removes from Egyptian theology, and lastly the Afrocentric Kemetism who beliefs in the racial supremacy of the black skinned people and whose main objective is the spiritual evolution of men. We explained that the Kemetic development in history is highly connected with the history of the United States and of Neopaganism and we showed with examples how Islam, Christianity and Budhism influenced the Kemetic thought. We explained how the Kemetics describe themselves as monolatrists, how they approach the Ancient Egyptian gods and what value they put on the human being. We found out that the Kemetics have seperated view on the gods and the goddesses and have mainly two ideas about the concept of god. The first one is the believe that the gods reside inside the human being and can be achieved through inner investigation while the second one believes that the gods are outside and should be respected through action and worship. We did research on their beliefs of the life after v death, paradise and hell and concluded that some Kemetics take the Egyptian view literally while others take it as metaphorical. And with that we researched the importance of the Ancient Egyptian concept of truth and justice, the goddess Maat and how it has an impact on the ethical thoughts of the Kemetics. We explained that the Kemetic rituals include offering, praying to the ancestors, yoga, meditation, oracl and worship in front of a shrine and what festivals there are in Kemetic calendar. Lastly we explained how the Kemetic movements took the Ancient Egyptian state system and incorporated it into their hierarchical structure of kings and queens and priests and priestesses. Keywords: Kemetism, Kemeticism, Neopaganism, Paganism, New Religious Movements, Kemetic Orthodoxy, Egyptology, Ancient Egypt vi ÖNSÖZ Bu tezin amacı Neopaganizm hareketinin Kemetik kolunu incelemek ve bu çerçevede onun tarihsel gelişimini, inançlarını, ritüellerini ve cemaat yapılanmalarını açıklamaktır. Bunlara dayanarak Kemetizm'i anlamanın pagan felsefesini ve New Age hareketini anlamak olduğunu söyleyebiliriz.

  • The State of Sex: Tourism, Sex and Sin in the New American Heartland
THE STATE OF SEX The State of Sex is a study of Nevada’s legal brothels that situates the nation’s only legal brothel industry in the political economy of con- temporary tourism. Nevada is part of the “new American heartland,” as its pastimes, people, and politics have become more central to the nation. The rise of a service and leisure economy over the past 60 years has propelled sexuality into the heart of contemporary markets. Yet, neoliberal laws in the United States promote business but limit sexual commerce. How have Nevada’s legal brothels survived, while the rest of the country criminalizes prostitution? How do the brothels operate? Who works in them? This book brings social theory on globalizing econ- omies, politics, leisure consumption, and emotional labor in interactive service work together with research on contemporary prostitution and sexual commerce. The authors employ an innovative, multi-method sociological approach, combining historical analysis of how the brothels came to be with over a decade’s worth of ethnographic research on the current state of the industry. "The thought that our original forefather lefthis home and country, emi grating to a new and unsettled region on account of religious principle should be precious inthe eyes ofhis posterity, and cause them to so remem ber iheir father's God, that they may be gathered inthe same bundle oflife." —Extract from letter of Mrs. Deborah D. (Qerould) Ranney. r INTRODUCTION. The origin of the publication of this chapter of family history is on this wise:— The descendants of Jabez Gerould, most of them liv ing inPennsylvania, have had several qninqaennial gatherings. (See appendix.) At their last meeting, in September, 1884, it was de cided to print their own family record, the expense was provided for, and the matter was committed to the care of Henry Gerould, m. d., or Cleveland, Ohio. The compiler made to him the proposition that we go one generation farther back, and print the descendents of Gamaliel Gerould, to which he cordially assented. The collection of material for a complete family history was begun more than twenty-five years ago. The usual difficulties have been experienced, in obtaining the desired information from persons but little interested in such things, who alone could furnish the facts. However, as it has been "a labor of love," the work has been carried on as far as the means, time, and information of the compiler would permit.
