01-大野 06.3.2 9:57 AM ページ1 “Monogatari” and “Old Monogatari” in Genji Monogatari Masako Ono What is curious about Genji monogatari 源氏物語 is that Murasaki Shikibu 紫式部 designates as“old”even those monogatari that were loved by the people in her age as the most fashionable and exciting ones. Her gesture to differentiate her own monogatari from old monogatari (mukashi monogatari 昔物語), however, does not effect what it purports, because the narrative of Genji continues and imitates the traditional pattern of old monogatari immediately after making a depreciatory com- ment on old monogatari. What I am going to observe is the deeper implication of this seeming paradox. I will investigate how Genji monogatari retroactively defines what old monogatari is by its paradoxical gesture of differentiating itself from and identifying itself with old monogatari. Monogatari gets defined when old mono- gatari is defined. In other words, monogatari as a genre does not present itself as monogatari, but as something different from old monogatari. I will argue that monogatari inheres something nostalgic in itself. We cannot reach the presence of monogatari except through old monogatari, because monogatari is constituted through its past. Monogatari is a genre nostalgically perceived. 1: Nostalgia for Mukashi Monogatari in Genji monogatari Genji monogatari constantly refers to old monogatari. They have, however, rarely addressed the question of whether these encounters are mutually desirable or, on the contrary, uninvited and therefore aggressive. For fear of anachronism, the topic of sexual violence has not been commonly pursued in the analyses of monogatari. I argue that not only can the phenomenon of sexual violence be clearly defined in the context of the monogatari genre, by drawing on contemporary feminist theories and philosophical debates, but also that it is easily identifiable within the text of these tales, by virtue of the coherent and cohesive patterns used to represent it. In my analysis of seven monogatari—Taketori, Utsuho, Ochikubo, Genji, Yoru no Nezame, Torikaebaya and Ariake no wakare—I follow the development of the textual representations of sexual violence and analyze them in relation to the role of these tales in supporting or subverting existing gender hierarchies. Finally, I examine the connection between representations of sexual violence and the monogatari genre itself. -

Donna Rohanna Patterson Elementary School Overview Rationale Objectives Strategies Classroom Activities Annotated Bibliography/Resources Appendices/Standards Overview Folk and fairy tale stories comprise most of the stories children hear from birth to 2nd grade. They are used not only to entertain, but often as teaching stories about the dangers and values of life. These very same stories are shared in many cultures around the world. Although they vary in characters, setting, and texture from one continent to the next, they remain some of the most powerful stories for teaching and learning during the early years. Folk and fairy tales have initiated children into the ways of the world probably from time immemorial. Many have changed over time to homogenize into the variety that we often see and hear today to meet a more generic audience, often leaving behind the tales geographic and social origins. By exposing students to a variety of multicultural renditions of a classic Fairy Tale they can begin to relate to these stories in new ways, leading to a richer literary experience. Fairy Tales written through ethnic eyes also give a great deal of cultural information, which can result in a richer experience for the students and students. We can then appreciate the origins and adaptations as they have migrated through time and space. These stories help to make sense of the world for young children. Folk and fairy tales were not meant only for entertainment, they provide a social identity, and instill values as well as teaching lessons. In my own experience I have found that classrooms are often filled with students that either come from other countries or have families that do. -

They designate taboos, write out life scripts for ideal behaviors, and demonstrate the punishments for violating the collective and its prescribed social roles. Tales pass on key cultural and social histories all in a metaphoric language. In this course, we will examine a variety of classical and contemporary fairy and folktale texts from German and other European cultures, learn about approaches to folklore materials and fairy tale texts, and look at our own culture with a critical-historical perspective. We will highlight key issues, values, and anxieties of European (and U.S.) culture as they evolve from 1400 to the present. These aspects of human life include arranged marriage, infanticide, incest, economic struggles, boundaries between the animal and human, gender roles, and class antagonisms. Among the tales we will read and learn to analyze using various interpretive methods are tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, by the Italians Basile and Straparola, by seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French writers such as D‘Aulnoy, de Beaumont, and Perrault, by Hans Christian Andersen and Oscar Wilde. We will also read 20th century re-workings of classical fairy tale motifs. The course is organized around clusters of Aarne, Thompson and Uther‘s ―tale types‖ such as the Cinderella, Bluebeard, and the Hansel-and-Gretel tales. -

[(essay date 1991) In the following essay, McGlathery explores the erotic implications of the father-daughter relationship in the romantic folktales of the Brothers Grimm, Giambattista Basile, and Charles Perrault, highlighting common plot scenarios.] As the stories discussed thus far show, emotional involvement between parents and children is a frequent object of portrayal in folktales. That this is especially true of the romantic tale should come as no surprise, for in love plots generally the requisite hindrance to the fulfillment of young desire often takes the form of parental objection or intervention. There are surprises to be found here, however. In particular, the romantic folktale offers the possibility of hinting, with seeming innocence, at erotically tinged undercurrents in the relationship between parent and child that do not lend themselves to tasteful direct portrayal. Fairy tale romance often depicts the child's first experience of leaving home and venturing out on its own, usually in connection with choosing a mate. In the stories of the brother and sister type, resistance to the taking of this step is reflected in a desire to return to the bosom of the family or, failing that, to retain the devoted company of one's siblings. Thus, we have seen how Hansel and Gretel, while prepared to survive together in the forest if need be are overjoyed at being able to live with their father, and how the sister in "The Seven Ravens" succeeds in restoring her brothers to human form and bringing them home with her. -

Die Forschung konzentriert sich auf maennlichen Figuren und andere Figuren mit maennlichen Funktionen (Protagonisten, Antagonisten und Nebenfiguren inklu- siv), die sich mit sich selbst, mit anderen maennlcihen oder weiblichen Figuren, Tieren oder uebernatuer- lichen Wesen konfrontieren. Die Forschung untersucht auch deren Benehmen in und ihre Interaktion mit der Maerchenumgebung in drei Gruppen - der Mann in der Familie, der Mann in der Gesellschaft und der Mann in der Natur. Als Methoden werden Literatur-analyse, Textstruktur-analyse, vergleichende Volk- skunde, Anthropologie, Gender Studies und Psychologie verwendet; Interpretationen von japanischer Kultur, sozio-historische Realitaet, Philosophie, Religion, Aesthetik und Volksglauben sind auch inbe- griffen. Key interest is taken in male figures or other figures with male functions, be them protagonists, antagonists or bit players, in other words - on the character of ”man” defined by his masculine role and seen in conflict with himself, other male and female characters, animal figures and representatives of the supernatural; as well as his actions in and interaction withthe tale environment. -

ABSTRACT Fairy tales hold the power to influence societies and to challenge societal injustices, and the story of Cinderella exemplifies both of these roles. In this study, I conduct a rhetorical analysis of four different versions of the Cinderella narrative: Charles Perrault’s “Cendrillon,” the Brothers Grimm’s “Ascenputtel,” Anne Sexton’s “Cinderella,” and Disney’s Cinderella (2015). I examine Perrault’s “Cendrillon” and the Grimms’ “Aschenputtel” using constitutive rhetoric. This theory operates around the basic premise that rhetoric holds the power to aid in the shaping of societies. While analyzing “Cendrillon” and “Aschenputtel,” I specifically look for themes of classism and nationalism, respectively. I then examine Sexton’s “Cinderella” and Disney’s Cinderella (2015) using feminist standpoint theory as my theoretical lens.
