Yet did millions of ordinary Americans learn to love the bomb? And to what extent did popular culture and the media play a role in forming public opinion on nuclear weapons? Many see the nuclear arms race of the Cold War as a period characterised by fear and panic about nuclear annihilation, but was this actually the case? Throughout the Cold War the public perception of nuclear weapons fluctuated significantly during various points of the conflict. This thesis concentrates on key events throughout the Cold War in order to track the development of nuclear weapons and their reception by the American public. Focussing firstly on Cuba in 1962, then on Détente throughout the 1970s, followed finally by the airing of the TV-movie The Day After in 1983. The aim of the thesis is to use these events to track the reception of nuclear weapons by the American public throughout this roughly twenty-year period. The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) and the Able Archer Crisis (1983) are seen as the two most dangerous moments of the Cold War, this thesis will track the development of public opinion between and including these two events. In the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) a new military doctrine began to emerge, one based on the idea of Mutually Assured Destruction. This doctrine, appropriately abbreviated to MAD, was based on the notion that both the United States and the Soviet Union had enough nuclear weaponry to entirely destroy each other and the world; hence, the assumption was that if no one could be sure of surviving a nuclear war, then a nuclear war would not take place. It hinged on the fact that neither country could have first-strike capabilities; the ability to wipe out the enemies nuclear arsenal in one strike and prevent a retaliatory strike. A kind of social history, the study concentrates on the war as remembered in the popular realm, examining novels as well as nonfiction, poetry, plays, movies, articles in political journals, songs, memorials, public opinion polls and more. Most everything but academic history is discussed. The study notes how the war's political historY. was not much remembered; the warrior, not the war, became the focus of national memory. The study argues that personal memory predominated over political memory for a number of reasons, the most important being the relative unimportance of the nation of Vietnam to most Americans.

    UNITED STATES COMMISSION ON SECURITY AND COOPERATION IN EUROPE The Helsinki Process: A Four-Decade Overview (prepared by Helsinki Commission staff, February 2017) In August 1975, the heads of state or government of 35 countries – the Soviet Union and all of Europe except Albania, plus the United States and Canada – held a historic summit in Helsinki, Finland, where they signed the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. This document is known as the Helsinki Final Act or the Helsinki Accords. The Conference, known as the CSCE, continued with follow-up meetings and is today institutionalized as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, or OSCE, based in Vienna, Austria.1 Confronting the Cold War The Helsinki Final Act was the culmination of “détente” in East-West relations that developed during the administrations of U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford to ease Cold War tensions. The idea of a multilateral summit document, however, was initially proposed by the Soviet Union as early as 1954. Moscow primarily wanted this to serve as a post-World War II peace treaty confirming both border changes and the Brezhnev and Ford in Helsinki, communist hold on the countries of East-Central Europe. The Soviets flanked by Kissinger and Gromyko originally also wanted to use an all-European conference to drive a wedge between the United States and its West European allies and to thwart efforts to bring Germany into the NATO alliance. The West resisted, but East-West tensions were becoming more relaxed by the early 1970s, as West Germany’s “Ostpolitik” increased regional stability and the Quadripartite Agreement on Berlin removed a barrier to broader talks between East and West.2 As the Kremlin under Leonid Brezhnev continued to press, Western capitals saw advantages in going forward provided that humanitarian concerns could be advanced, their own security concerns could be addressed, and recognition of the status quo in Europe could be formally avoided.

    NAVY NEWS WEEK 20-1 13 May 2018 ReCAAP Warns of Abu Sayyaf Kidnapping Threat in Malaysia Asian piracy watchdog ReCAAP ISC issued a warning on May 1st to seafarers over crew abduction threat posed by members of Abu Sayyaf in Malaysia. Aby Sayyaf is one of the most violent jihadist groups in the southern Philippines, notorious for kidnappings for ransom. “The group will be using a blue 3-Engine speedboat and is expected to be underway to Sabah within the next 24 hours,” ReCAAP said, citing information from Phillippine Focal Point. As informed, the group is planning to kidnap mariners operating in the area. “All vessels transiting the area are advised to exercise extreme caution when transiting in the waters of Lahad Datu and surrounding waters in Sabah,” the warning further reads. Since October 2016, the perpetrators have begun to target ships of larger tonnage, such as Dong Bang Giant 2 , Royal 16 ,Southern Falcon and Kumiai Shagang. Once in their hands, mariners are often subject to months of captivity and sometimes even execution. This is in particular due to the fact that the Philippine government has adopted a no-ransom policy when dealing with the militant group. In an incident dating November 2016, six men were taken by the militants from the bulk carrier ROYAL 16 Bodies of two decapitated seafarers were found by the Philippine military in July 2017, while one seafarer was allegedly killed in a gunbattle in the same month. Two seafarers have been rescued from the group, while the fate of one more mariner remains unknown.

    Bound to Fail Bound to Fail John J. Mearsheimer The Rise and Fall of the Liberal International Order By 2019, it was clear that the liberal international order was in deep trouble. The tectonic plates that underpin it are shifting, and little can be done to repair and rescue it. Indeed, that order was destined to fail from the start, as it contained the seeds of its own destruction. The fall of the liberal international order horriªes the Western elites who built it and who have beneªted from it in many ways.1 These elites fervently believe that this order was and remains an important force for promoting peace and prosperity around the globe. Many of them blame President Donald Trump for its demise. After all, he expressed contempt for the liberal order when campaigning for president in 2016; and since taking ofªce, he has pur- sued policies that seem designed to tear it down. It would be a mistake, however, to think that the liberal international order is in trouble solely because of Trump’s rhetoric or policies. In fact, more funda- mental problems are at play, which account for why Trump has been able to successfully challenge an order that enjoys almost universal support among the foreign policy elites in the West. The aim of this article is to determine why the liberal world order is in big trouble and to identify the kind of inter- national order that will replace it. I offer three main sets of arguments. First, because states in the modern world are deeply interconnected in a variety of ways, orders are essential for facilitating efªcient and timely interactions.
