Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Abstract The present paper deals with the Oedipal theme as was treated by Sophocles in Oedipus Rex and then imitated first in Oedipus written in collaboration by John Dryden and Nathaniel Lee in English literature, and then in Arabic literature by Tawfiq Al-Hakim in his King Oedipus and Ali Ahmed Bakathir in Oedipus' Tragedy. The study investigates changes made by the three writers in the plot and main characters and in some issues and dramatic elements of the tragedy. These changes are introduced by the playwrights to make their versions acceptable to their contemporary audiences. The purposes of the three writers are considered to see how far they have succeeded in fulfilling them. Introduction The Importance of Being Earnest is an accomplished parody of the con- ventions of comedy. It also contains numerous examples of Oscar Wilde’s most characteristic stylistic device: the paradox. The present essay deals with the connection between these two features of the play.2 In my view, the massive presence of both parody and paradox in Wilde’s masterpiece is not coincidental; they are linked by a num- ber of significant similarities. I will analyse these similarities and show that, in The Importance of Being Earnest, parody and paradox enter into a connection that is essential to the unique achievement of this play. 2. Parody The most obvious example of parody in Wilde’s play is the anagnori- sis that removes the obstacles standing in the way to wedded bliss for Jack and Gwendolen. The first of these obstacles is a lack of respect- able relatives on Jack’s part. As a foundling who was discovered in a handbag at the cloakroom of Victoria railway station, he does not find favour with Gwendolen’s mother, the formidable Lady Bracknell. She adamantly refuses to accept a son-in-law “whose origin [is] a Termi- nus” (3.129). The second obstacle is Gwendolen’s infatuation with the name “Ernest,” the alias under which Jack has courted her. When she discovers that her lover’s real name is Jack, she regards this as an “insuperable barrier” between them (3.51). Both difficulties are re- moved when the true identity of the foundling is revealed. -

JOHN DRYDEN AND THE LATE 17TH CENTURY DRAMATIC EXPERIENCE LECTURE 16 (C) BY ASHER ASHKAR GOHAR 1 CREDIT HR. JOHN DRYDEN (1631 – 1700) HIS LIFE: John Dryden was an English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the “Age of Dryden”. The son of a country gentleman, Dryden grew up in the country. When he was 11 years old the Civil War broke out. Both his father’s and mother’s families sided with Parliament against the king, but Dryden’s own sympathies in his youth are unknown. About 1644 Dryden was admitted to Westminster School, where he received a predominantly classical education under the celebrated Richard Busby. His easy and lifelong familiarity with classical literature begun at Westminster later resulted in idiomatic English translations. In 1650 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1654. What Dryden did between leaving the university in 1654 and the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 is not known with certainty. In 1659 his contribution to a memorial volume for Oliver Cromwell marked him as a poet worth watching. His “heroic stanzas” were mature, considered, sonorous, and sprinkled with those classical and scientific allusions that characterized his later verse. This kind of public poetry was always one of the things Dryden did best. On December 1, 1663, he married Elizabeth Howard, the youngest daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st earl of Berkshire. -

Athens Journal of Humanities & Arts - Volume 1, Issue 2 – Pages 147-156 Women in Arms: Amazons in 17th Century English Drama By Margarete Rubik This paper investigates the portrayal of Amazons in a variety of seventeenth century English plays. Sword women combining male connoted aggression and female beauty functioned as a female dream of empowerment as well as a misogynist nightmare. Hence the image of such 'masculine' women was mutable and could assume a number of different characteristics: Amazons could be portrayed as chivalrous and cruel, glamorous or denaturalized, chaste or lecherous. Humourous pictures of martial women exist side by side with hostile ones attacking the unruliness and insubordination of women and their lust for men. The fate of Amazons in seventeenth century drama is generally either death on the battlefield or marriage and submission to patriarchal rules. There are a few rare examples of dutiful wives still combining marital and martial virtues, but more often these female warriors only lay down their arms at the end of a play, out of love. Despite their prowess, the women always lose the single combat with a worthy male antagonist – usually the very man they love. In the central, sensual moment of revelation, the woman's helmet falls off and her hair falls loose. In plays featuring women in male disguise, the relationship between the lovers is often charged with homoerotic overtones: the hero is passionately attracted to the supposed boy-soldier. Androgynous figures like the Amazons also raise the question whether femininity and masculinity are inborn qualities or the products of education. -

Jocasta and the Sin of Thebes Bernadette Waterman Ward ABSTRACT: The tragic victim of Oedipus the King is not Oedipus, who after his sufferings shall be raised to divinity; it is his mother Jocasta. She attempted the death by her torture of her own son. When she discovers that he has survived and is her husband, she seeks even to continue her mother-son incest so as to conceal her misdeeds. Cowardly silence among the citizens of doomed Thebes seals their collusion in evil. An examina- tion of the culture of the fatal city can bring the play more vitally into the world that our students actually inhabit, and serve as a warning against the moral collapse that encourages the killing of children. EDIPUS THE KING, the most famous drama of Sophocles, invites many approaches in the classroom. One can delve into such Oquestions as the proper limits of human knowledge, the relation of fate and freewill, responsibility for inadvertent crime, the proper understanding of piety and the power of the gods, and the relation of kingship and self-sacrifice. One can address hubris – pride, overreaching – and hamartia – the mistake or tragic flaw. One can trace dramatic irony in the images of vision and deliberate blindness, or perhaps, with Freud leering in the background, contemplate sexual taboos. Many scholars investigate the guilt of Oedipus, but rarely does the focus shift from the polluted scapegoat to the deep corruption in the scapegoating city of Thebes. The Thebans cast out Oedipus as impure, but in fact they cause their own destruction. By considering the fate of the city, rather than that of Oedipus, our students can make this play vital in the world that we actually inhabit. -

This is apparent in both English homes and popular culture, as foreign foods were featured in contemporary recipe books, medical manuals, treatises, travel narratives, and even in plays performed during the period. Their inclusion in the English home and in popular culture is important; it illustrates that there was a general fascination with these foods that went beyond just eating them. When written about in travel narratives or incorporated into plays, the English were able to mentally consume such products. -

The Story of Oedipus: Prequel to Antigone • LAIUS is left an orphaned minor by his father Labdacus • AMPHION AND ZETHUS rule Thebes (Build the Cadmeia) and exile Laius • Laius goes to live in Elis (PISA) with King Pelops (son of Tantalus son of Zeus) • Laius becomes very good friends with young Chrysippus, youngest child of King Pelops • Laius and Chrysippus run away together (or Laius rapes Chrysippus). Pelops curses Laius. • Laius returns to Thebes and becomes King • Laius marries his cousin Jocasta, but they are childless • Laius goes to Delphi and intends to ask Apollo's advice; Apollo announces that Laius will have a child who will kill him • Laius and Jocasta have a baby son (Oedipus) whom they plan to kill. The royal shepherd is ordered to dispose of the child on Mt. Cithaeron. Instead he gives Oedipus to the royal Corinthian shepherd. • The Royal Corinthian Shepherd takes the child back to the childless king and queen of Corinth (Polybus and Merope), who adopt him. • At about the age of 18, at a dinner party, one of Oedipus' friends makes a rude remark about his not being a real Corinthian but only adopted. Oedipus is shocked and shamed, and goes off to Delphi to ask Apollo about the truth. • Apollo tells Oedipus he is doomed to kill his father and sleep with his mother. • Oedipus unknowingly kills his father Laius (within hours, at The Three Ways) • Oedipus kills the SPHINX on the way from the Three Ways to Thebes • Oedipus is received at Thebes as a national hero, and invited to marry the recently widowed queen Jocasta. -

Polis as Player in Aeschylus’ Seven Against Thebes This paper will focus on the city in Aeschylus’ Seven Against Thebes and argue that the city itself plays a prominent role not just in locating the action, but also in participating in it as a fundamental part of the curse on the house of Laius. Previous scholarship has focused on the absence of Polynices as a speaking character in Aeschylus’ Seven Against Thebes: some have argued that his absence indicates Aeschylus’ sole focus on Eteocles (Kitto 1966, 47), even denying any rightful claim to dike on Polynices’ part (cf. Gagarin 1976, 122 n. 11). The implication of this stance is that Eteocles’ death is predicated solely on Oedipus’ curse on his sons (785-787) and is not caused by any wrongful action on his part. Contrary to this view, I will argue that Eteocles’ death is caused by his mistreatment of the city, and I will suggest that this type of mistreatment is the driving force behind the curse on the family. Aeschylus’ emphasis on intergenerational misfortune is well-known as the basis on which his trilogies are built, and scholarly attention has revolved around human action and interaction as the manifestations of intergenerational conflict. I will argue that, in addition to the human players, the city of Thebes must also be understood as an active participant in and focal point of this intergenerational narrative. This paper will explore the various personifications of the city, first as mother and caretaker in Eteocles’ opening speech (10-15), and later more general ones that speak of the city as one entity (793, 803, 900) comprising its physical structures (795, 901). -

Nussbaum, Chair Furbish’d Remnants argues that eighteenth-century theatrical adaptations set in the Orient destabilize categories of difference, introducing Oriental characters as subjects of sympathy while at the same time defamiliarizing the people and space of London. Applying contemporary theories of emotion, I contend that in eighteenth-century theater, the actor and the character become distinct subjects for the affective transfer of sympathy, increasing the emotional potential of performance beyond the narrative onstage. Adaptation as a form heightens this alienation effect, by drawing attention to narrative’s properties as an artistic construction. A paradox at the heart of eighteenth-century theater is that while the term “adaptation” did not have a specific literary or theatrical definition until near the end of the period, in practice adaptations and translations proliferated on the English stage. Anticipating Linda Hutcheon’s postmodernist theory of adaptation, eighteenth-century playwrights and performers conceptualized adaptation as both process and product. Adaptation created a narrative mode that emphasized the process and labor of performance for audiences in order to create a higher level of engagement with ii audiences. -

A leading ingénue of multiple talents, Bracegirdle played significant roles in comedy, tragedy, and music-drama from her debut in 1688 to her retirement in 1707. In comedy, Bracegirdle specialized in marriageable young women of rank, wit, and fortune.1 In serious drama, Bracegirdle often played the pathetic heroine, a virtuous woman stalked by a predatory man.2 Though primarily an actress, Bracegirdle also called upon her impressive soprano voice in many entr’actes and the occasional musical part.3 A first-rank player and hardworking company member from very early in her career, Bracegirdle played some eighty roles over a nineteen-year span that kept her consistently before the public eye.
