  • Lime Kilns in Worcestershire
Lime Kilns in Worcestershire Nils Wilkes Acknowledgements I first began this project in September 2012 having noticed a number of limekilns annotated on the Ordnance Survey County Series First Edition maps whilst carrying out another project for the Historic Environment Record department (HER). That there had been limekilns right across Worcestershire was not something I was aware of, particularly as the county is not regarded to be a limestone region. When I came to look for books or documents relating specifically to limeburning in Worcestershire, there were none, and this intrigued me. So, in short, this document is the result of my endeavours to gather together both documentary and physical evidence of a long forgotten industry in Worcestershire. In the course of this research I have received the help of many kind people. Firstly I wish to thank staff at the Historic Environmental Record department of the Archive and Archaeological Service for their patience and assistance in helping me develop the Limekiln Database, in particular Emma Hancox, Maggi Noke and Olly Russell. I am extremely grateful to Francesca Llewellyn for her information on Stourport and Astley; Simon Wilkinson for notes on Upton-upon-Severn; Gordon Sawyer for his enthusiasm in locating sites in Strensham; David Viner (Canal and Rivers Trust) in accessing records at Ellesmere Port; Bill Lambert (Worcester and Birmingham Canal Trust) for involving me with the Tardebigge Limekilns Project; Pat Hughes for her knowledge of the lime trade in Worcester and Valerie Goodbury

  • King Richard Iii William Shakespeare Hdt What? Index
PEOPLE MENTIONED IN WALDEN “POISONOUS BUNCH-BACKED TOAD” WALDEN: Near the end of March, 1845, I borrowed an axe and went down to the woods by Walden Pond, nearest to where I intended to build my house, and began to cut down some tall arrowy white pines, still in their youth, for timber. It is difficult to begin without borrowing, but perhaps it is the most generous course thus to permit your fellow-men to have an interest in your enterprise. The owner of the axe, as he released his hold on it, said that it was the apple of his eye; but I returned it sharper than I received it. It was a pleasant hillside where I worked, covered with pine woods, through which I looked out on the pond, and a small open field in the woods where pines and hickories were springing up. The ice in the pond was not yet dissolved, though there were some open spaces, and it was all dark colored and saturated with water. There were some slight flurries of snow during the days that I worked there; but for the most part when I came out on to the railroad, on my way home, its yellow sand heap stretched away gleaming in the hazy atmosphere, and the rails shone in the spring sun, and I heard the lark and pewee and other birds already come to commence another year with us. They were pleasant spring days, in which the winter of man’s discontent was thawing as well as the earth, and the life that had lain torpid began to stretch itself.

W. S. SYMONDS, M.A., F.G.S. Born 1818; Died 1887. Forty years ago, the promotion of Natural Science throughout the country was mainly entrusted to the agency of the various local Field Clubs and Natural History Societies, amongst the most active and useful of which may be mentioned the Malvern Natural History Field Club, the Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club, and the Cotteswold Club. It was in the districts over which these clubs held sway that the subject of our present notice passed the best years of his life and carried on those geological labours with which his name will always stand associated. Mr. Symonds was born at Hereford in 1818, being the son of William Symonds, Esq., of Elsdon, Herefordshire. After passing through his schooldays with Mr. Allen at Cheltenham, and reading with the Rev. J. P. Sill, he was sent to Christ's College, Cambridge, where Sedgwick was then in the height of his popularity as a geological lecturer. He took his degree in 1842, and in 1843 he was appointed Curate of Offenham, near Evesham, where he became acquainted with Mr. Hugh Strickland, from whom he received many of his first lessons in Natural History.

The Anglo-Saxon landscape, in spite of considerable woodland, gave scope for the farming communities described in the region in Domesday Book. 1-lanley not only supported a robust agricultural economy in its priJne, supplemented by woodland industries such as pottery manufacture, but it was also, with its castle built by king John, the headquarters of the royal forest and chase of Malvem. The forest covered about one hundred square miles of the Malvem plain from Worcester to Gloucester, although Corse was detached in theory in the early thirteenth century.
