LETTERS TO THE EDITOR L Lokomotive Leipzig. The club was formed as VfB Leipzig on 13 May 1896. They were immediately successful and won the first German national championship final held in 1903, beating DFC Prag (Prague) with a somewhat emphatic 7-2 score line. The club was dissolved by the occupying Allied authorities in the aftermath of World War 2. Before a return to activities later when East German football saw a re-organization in 1965. They were domestic cup winners in 1976, 1981, 1986 and 1987 and made an appearance in the 1987 final of the European Cup Winners' Cup, falling 0–1 to Ajax after a Marco van Basten goal. The club was bankrupted in 2004, results annulled and the club dissolved, the club was resurrected again yet despite an enthusiastic backing by supporters the club has been blighted by politically motivated problems behind the scenes. Currently the team are sixth in the Regionalliga Nordost one of five leagues at the fourth tier nationally. O Boldklub. The club were founded on 12 July 1887 as Odense Cricketklub, with cricket the only sport. In 1889, football and tennis were added, necessitating a name change to the present or OB as they are known. The club has won three Danish championships- 1977, 1982 and 1989 and five Danish Cup trophies, currently they sit in the lower reaches of the top flight. In the 1994–95 UEFA Cup, the club reached beyond the first round in a European tournament for the first time in club history, and after defeating several opponents famously defeated Real Madrid over two legs to reach the quarter-final of the tournament. The club were runaway winners of the 1999 1st Division which saw them make a return to the Superliga for 1999/00 season. They won the 2002 Danish Cup and enjoyed several top five league finishes before a second placed slot in 2008/09 became their best performance to date.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

MATCH REPORT - WESSEX LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION TUESDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2009 - LYMINGTON TOWN 2 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS 4

A six goal thriller for the small crowd at the Lymington Sports Ground tonight, including two quality strikes in a game that was hard fought at both ends from start to finish and put an end to the home side’s mini run of form. The Harlequins nearly scored within the first thirty seconds Page coming out a long way to clear the ball to see it returned towards goal by Palmer but not really a threat to the goal. Two minutes later O’Keefe was stopped winning a free kick, but Slade wasted the opportunity. In the tenth minute Renyard and Palmer combined well on the right flank but the final ball failed to create the breakthrough. Bemerton were in control but couldn’t make this count Llewellyn coming close, but was pulled back for being offside, and Page was forced to clear under pressure from Slade. However on 16 minutes they took the lead when JONES made the most of the situation by beating the offside trap with the hosts pushing up. This seemed to spur on the home side, Purkiss came close on 20 minutes and just after the half hour did get back into the game when RITCHIE struck the target with the help of a slight deflection from around 20 yards out. The hosts managed to restrict Bemerton to a couple of more chances in the first half particularly on 38 minutes when Mankin had a fierce long range shot. This sandwiched two good efforts though for Lymington- with Purkiss and Traies both being denied by Crowfoot. However on 41, Lymington took the lead RITCHIE was blocked 20 yards from goal. He took the free kick himself and a cracking left foot shot flew into the net. In an action packed first half, Llewellyn rounded off the action with a free header that zipped over the bar. HT 2-1 However just five minutes into the second period, Bemerton got their equaliser, COX converting from close range after Page had failed to clear the ball properly, and just three minutes later regained their lead after Cox’s free kick was converted from close range by SLADE. However Lymington still had enough in their tank to continue to cause their guests some problems and Ritchie again was involved with a low free kick into the box that was dived on by Crowfoot at the second attempt. The game continued to switch from end to end, but on 71 minutes there seemed to be an inspired substitution by the Harlequins when Cox was replaced by HUGHES. With his first touch the sub brought the ball under control and with his second deposited a half volley into the back of the net with Page well beaten. With the bit between their teeth Bemerton looked to grab a further goal with O’Keefe and Palmer creating chances for Jones to deliver good crosses into the danger area but the hosts defence held firm, but the final action of the game went Lymington’s way and saw Clark’s shot flash past the post with under four minutes remaining. FT 2-4

PLYMOUTH PARKWAY- THE FA VASE AND THE WESSEX LEAGUE

Whilst the majority of the Competitions and Leagues have been abandoned for the season, the FA is continuing with the FA Trophy and Vase, with the two finalists already known for the former. The Vase swung into action again on 10th April with four much delayed Third Round ties taking place at Deal Town, Guildford City, North Ferriby and Plymouth Parkway and the visitors to the last named are FAREHAM TOWN, for what will be the seventh meeting but eighth game between the West Country side and the Wessex League in the Competition. Before looking back at the previous meetings, a brief introduction to Plymouth Parkway FC, They were formed as relatively recently as 1988 and competed in the Plymouth and District League and then in the Devon League under the names of Ex-Air Flyers and EAF Plymouth FC, the names because of sponsorship received from Exeter Airport, They played at the Parkway Sports Club and changed their name to their current title because of the help received from the Club. They joined the South Western League in 1998 and played all their matches in their first season away from home through having lost the use of their Ground. They then found a temporary home in Devonport whilst their current ground, Bolitho Park, was built and in 2007/08 became founder members of the South West Peninsula League Premier Division where they stayed for eleven seasons before gaining promotion to the Western League. They first entered the Vase in 2006/07 but it was 2014/15 before they crossed swords with the Wessex League when, having defeated Willand Rovers, Keynsham Town and Tuffley Rovers, they were drawn away to VERWOOD TOWN in the Second Round. This must have come under the heading of “an epic cup tie” with Verwood winning 5-4 courtesy of goals from Tom Whelan (2), Jordan Fisk, Carl Fisher and Dan Munday. Some revenge was gained by the West Country however in the next round when the “Potters” went down 6-1 at St. Austell. The following season, 2015/16, Parkway defeated Street and Willand Rovers to set up a First Round home tie with BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY. Given that at the end of the season the two Clubs finished fourth and third in their respective Leagues a close tie looked in prospect, but it was a bad day at the Office for the Waterside Club as they succumbed to a 6-0 defeat. 2016/17 and the third year running that they came across the Wessex League, this time BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS in the First Round Proper. Plymouth had overcome Brislington whilst Bemerton had defeated Downton and Longwell Green to set up the clash at Western Way. After ninety minutes and extra time it was all square at two goals apiece, Bemerton’s goals coming from Sam Griffin and Scott Joyce. So a replay at Bolitho Park with Plymouth surely thinking that they had done the hard part. But Bemerton thought otherwise and two goals from Jack Slade and one from Jake Burgess gave them a highly creditable 3-0 victory. The Salisbury side went on to beat Cullompton Rangers (after a replay) before bowing out to Melksham. A two season gap and 2019/20 when Plymouth Parkway raided the land of Wessex three times in quick succession and each time they returned west with the spoils. In the First Round they won 3-1 at ROMSEY TOWN, Geoff Dunn scoring for the home side; before returning to win 3-0 at BROCKENHURST in Round Two. Round Three entailed a visit to HAMWORTHY UNITED and a four one victory with Ollie Davis scoring the Hammers consolation goal. From there Parkway beat Woodbridge in Suffolk and West Auckland at home before going out in the Quarter Final to another side from the North East in Hebburn Town. As an aside they have encountered Wessex opposition once in the FA Cup when losing to an Alex Godfrey goal at Portland in 2017.

Back to the main subject, the Vase, and the score after today is Wessex two, Parkway five and one draw. So, commiserations to FAREHAM for a game that has been played at the Devon County FA Ground in Coach Road Newton Abbot because of considerable work being carried out at Bolitho Park, we wish the victors well in their adventure.

APRIL FOOLS DAY REVISITED

Malcolm Thomas has written in about our feature in Edition 39, and we thank him for this story. “As an old Yorkshireman who has lived in Four Marks, well someone has to, for the last 16 years; in the last few years I have watched many matches in the Wessex League, mainly at Alresford and Alton and have enjoyed the experience very much. It helps being able to watch as a neutral and just let the game happen without worrying about the result. I wish to thank you for your entertaining and informative newsletters which I read each week. In a recent Newsletter you mentioned April Fools Day fixtures and it took me back to April Fools Day 2000 when I went to watch Oldham Athletic v Cambridge United, which finished 1-0. The match officials were Mr. Brandwood assisted by Mr. Brand and Mr. Wood. The programme editor said that this proved the Football League does have a sense of humour and listed other appointments for that day. Leake, Coffey and Kettle; Alcock, Brown and Brittain; Lodge, Bannister and Hall; Barber, Bone and Head; Styles, Downs and Hills; Knight, Castle and King. Hope that the above was of some interest to you even if it has nothing to do with Wessex League matters! The next Saturday April Fools Day will be in 2023 then 2034 when I shall be long gone.”

ROCK ON

Following on from our feature last week regarding ‘A wider world than Wessex’- and in particular Europa FC, thanks to Dave Cairns who has written in with this update. “In answer to your query about Gibraltarian football, there is no relegation any more, the Gibraltar Second Division was done away with at the end of 2018/19 and all the countries clubs are in the Premier. There is an Intermediate Division but that contains reserve teams only apart from Hound Dogs FC who were for some reason allowed to retain a first team at that level. Interestingly, all matches are played at Victoria Stadium which is the only stadium in the country. There is a full size 3/4g pitch outside the stadium which has no spectator facilities and another pitch inside the Royal Gibraltar Regiments' barracks but that is it for the whole country. There are also a couple of small sided sized pitches. There also used to be a pitch in the British Army/Royal Navy barracks to the south of the Rock but I believe that is now gone. There are no grass pitches in the territory.”

THE FA CUP – SCORED FIVE AWAY FROM HOME – AND LOST!

Season 1953-54 and the seventh entry for Portland United in the FA Cup since the Competition re-started following the Second World War writes John Gorman. Portland were long time members of the Western League at that time and were to finish in seventh place in Division One at the Season’s end. The League was won by Weymouth Reserves and also included Salisbury, Poole Town and Dorchester as well as the not so readily remembered Stonehouse from Gloucestershire, The Second Division incidentally included Peasedown Miners Welfare who still play in Somerset County Football today. The draw for the First Qualifying Round paired Portland with current Wessex League rivals, Shaftesbury, who as far as one can determine played in the Senior League at that stage as the Dorset Combination was not formed until two or three years later. The writer has been unable to find any League Tables to confirm the assumption but they were obviously some way below Portland’s level as the eventual 11-1 score line suggests. The second Qualifying Round saw Portland make the relatively short journey to Dorchester -as they had done two years earlier – and they returned with a no doubt hard earned three one victory to their name over a Club who finished five places behind them in the League at the end of the campaign. Qualifying Round Three and a home tie with Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic, the third consecutive season in which the two Clubs had met in the Competition. The Bournemouth side were one of the strongest in the at the time - they finished third behind Newport and Reading “A” in the season in question - and the previous two meetings had resulted in a win apiece. The third clash however went very much Portland’s way with a 4-1 victory taking them in to the Fourth Qualifying Round and only one game away from the First Round Proper and the “Big Boys”. The draw was however far from kind to Portland, sending them in to Wales for a tie with Welsh League South side Llanelli who finished in mid table in a Division that included sides from the Football League Clubs in Cardiff and Swansea. This would have been far from an easy journey for Portland since it was before the Severn Bridge came in to being, which presumably meant going as far north as Gloucester before crossing the Severn though there may have been a Ferry further south. Either way it would have been a round trip of 350-400 miles. The game was a classic cup tie in all respects. Portland took a two goal lead but were pulled back to two all at the break. From there the score progressed to four all before the home side clinched victory in the closing stages by six goals to five So Portland had scored twenty five goals in four matches and still lost out on a chance of a tie with Football League opposition. Llanelli were subsequently drawn away to Northampton Town and went down by three goals to nil. In the tie at Llanelli all five Portland goals were score by a player called “Dusty” Miller and one wonders how many of the goals he scored in the previous rounds. His proper name was John Miller and he had played for Weymouth for the five previous seasons, scoring fifty one goals in seventy one matches, That in itself is an achievement but to score five goals away in a cup tie and finish on the losing side is perhaps a somewhat rarer achievement,

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 41

The FA has provided an update on grassroots football in advance of step two of the Government’s roadmap. The Government has confirmed that on Monday 12 April we will enter step two of the roadmap. Our guidance has therefore been updated to reflect the changes to national restrictions. The key changes to note are in relation to spectators, use of changing rooms and outdoor hospitality. Travel As organised sport can resume, all participants may travel to games but should avoid travel at the busiest times and routes, as well as minimising any unnecessary journeys where possible. All participants must follow the Government’s guidance on safer travel. Participants should note that this guidance will be updated as we move through the different steps of the Government’s roadmap. All participants should therefore regularly review this guidance to make sure they are following up to date information. Changing rooms Changing rooms can be used as part of step two of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown. However, participants should minimise their use of changing facilities where possible. Toilets will be allowed to open, 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after training and/or matches. Spectators On 7 April the Government updated its guidance in relation to spectators. This confirms that at step two and step one b, spectators are not permitted to attend sporting events taking place on private land, other than adults needed to supervise under-18s that they have a responsibility for or providing care or assistance to a person with disabilities. They should maintain social distance and not mix with other households. This does not prevent people from viewing recreational or organised sport that is taking place in a public space, e.g. a park, at step one b or step two, in groups of up to 6 people or 2 households. However, sporting events that are intended to attract spectators (including ticketed football matches), or events that are likely to attract a significant number of spectators (e.g. matches that would attract a large crowd) should not take place in a public space, or on private land, until step three. Parents/Carers Where clubs and facilities can accommodate this safely, parents and carers are permitted to be present at football activities, although they must observe the relevant Government Covid-19 guidance, including those on gathering limits for spectators. Indoor Football As part of step two of the Government’s roadmap, indoor football for under 18s can take place in line with Department for Education and Out of School Setting guidance. All participants should read and follow this guidance for all indoor football activities. Disabled people can take part in organised outdoor and indoor football without being subject to social contact limits. Indoor football for adults is not currently allowed. This is planned to return no earlier than Monday 17 May for adults, as part of step three of the Government’s roadmap. Outdoor Hospitality As part of step two of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown, outdoor hospitality at grassroots football is permitted. All participants must follow government guidance on hospitality settings and the specific advice for sport facility operators available on the government’s website. People using clubhouses and hospitality facilities must adhere to legal gathering limits and wider government guidance. Please note that while outdoor hospitality is permitted, spectators are not allowed at games unless on public land. This guidance applies to all youth and adult football and futsal, including all formats of the game. If there are any further updates from the Government, we will communicate these in due course and we will continue to update our guidance as we move through the different steps of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown. It is extremely important that clubs, players, coaches, match officials, league officials, volunteers, parents, carers, and facility providers continue to strictly follow both the UK Government's latest guidance on COVID-19 and respective bespoke guidance documents from The FA. Any incidents of non-compliance should be reported to the local County Football Association.
