2 Canterbury City FC—A History Canterbury City was revived in 2007 after folding in 2000-01. They were the first football club in the country to be formed as a Community Interest Company and won promotion from the County League Division II (East) in their first season. They followed this by securing promotion to the Premier division in 2010/11 season after an unbeaten run and winning the Les Leckie Cup.

As a community based club, we run several sides including Youths, Girls’, Disability and Walking Football.

Although for some fifty years there were various versions of a City club, it was not until 1947 that a truly representative one came about. For many years they played in the Kent League, the Southern League, and the Metropolitan League which they joined in 1958, finishing third and guaranteeing promotion to the Southern League Division One.

During the 1960s City twice reached the first round of the FA Cup. In 1963-64 they lost 6-0 at home to Torquay United before a club record crowd of 3,001 and in 1968-69 they went to Swin- don and, by all accounts, were unlucky to lose 1-0.

During the early 1970s they struggled in the Southern Division and by the early 1990s they were also in financial trouble. They returned to the Kent League and although initially doing well, they finally finished bottom in two consecutive seasons and folded

Under the management of Ben Smith/Ada Gower, and coach Darren Beale, City’s 2015/16 season produced their best league position finish since reforming, 8th, and also had their longest ever run in the FA Vase.

3 MANAGERS COLUMN

Welcome to a new season at Faversham FC where we ground share again for the 2020-2021 season.

We look forward to welcoming the Officials, oppositions players and coach- ing team and supporters alike for this opening fixture in the SCEFL .

It has been a long 6 months with a lot of uncertainty. This season starts like no other has before but the passion and desire to succeed remains the same.

We have seen a few changes in the club leading up to today both behind the scenes and also within the first team management. Sam Wilson has recently been appointed assistant manager and Craig Coles also joins the coaching team. I’m very excited to work with both and as a coaching staff we are ex- cited to get to work with what is shaping up to be an exciting squad.

We have been happy with the recruitment over the summer, bringing in the likes of Harry Brown, Kwasi Amoah and Tim Beckford amongst others. Whilst the nucleus of last seasons squad have remained we look forward to developing a strong unit.

I look forward to seeing you at the game and hope you are as happy to be back as we are!

4 TODAYS VISITORS

Founded as recently as 2014, Welling Town FC started out as a Sunday side playing on a Council pitch at Hall Place, Bexley in the London and Kent Suburban League. Achieving two promotions in as many seasons, the club then expanded to include a second Sunday side, with both playing in the Woolwich and Eltham Sunday Football Alliance.

The move to Saturday football was inevitable and we were accepted in to the Kent County Football League in the summer of 2016 despite having no past playing record in Saturday regional football on the ba- sis of our good Sunday record, excellent conduct and professional set- up demonstrating ambition and organisation beyond many sides at that level.

Our debut season in 2016/17 saw us win promotion and the West Kent Challenge Shield beating four teams from higher divisions in the pro- cess – our first ever silverware.

The 2017/18 season was extraordinary – winning the Kent County Sec- ond Division, as well as defending our West Kent Challenge Shield. However, the real peak of the season was winning the Kent Junior Cup, a competition with over 160 entrants, ranking us as the top ama- teur side in Kent. A rare treble had been achieved, scoring over 130 goals in the process, and losing just one match in 53, over a 21 month period.

Meanwhile, our success on the field, had been mirrored by an applica- tion off the field to the FA to move in to the semi-professional ranks for 2018/19. After many months of paperwork, calls and meetings, the ag- onising wait was over, and we were approved for membership of the Southern Counties East Football League First Division, Step 6 of the non-league pyramid, for the new season ahead.

5 TODAYS VISITORS Contd….

Not wanting to have gone to such lengths in gaining entry just to make the numbers up, we were determined to prove our worth and be up towards the top of the table pushing for another trophy and promo- tion. Gaining a huge points advantage early in the season and setting the early pace, we were slowly clawed back as others made up their games in hand, but a strong run in the last two months of the season ensured another historic title win, lifting the Southern Counties East First Division title at the first time of asking, and therefore promotion to their Premier Division for 2019/20. As a result of our new found level we were also drawn in the FA Vase and FA Cup for the first time.

During 2019/20 we made our debuts in the FA Cup losing at the first hurdle to AFC Uckfield, as well as the FA Vase, where we faired better winning four ties before being eliminated by Chatham Town in a 1-0 away defeat in the 3rd Round proper – in front of nearly 300 people.

Our debut league season in the SCEFL Premier started well as we went on an 8 game unbeaten run from September through November 2019, which including cup games, saw a significant unbeaten run and a strong top 6 position, before a poorer run from December until the Covid-19 lockdown ending the season prematurely, saw us finish in a highly commendable 9th place above many established sides at this level.

The club has therefore progressed from recreational Sunday football in the park, to semi-professional football in stadiums, in a little over three years, including numerous promotions, title wins and cup victories along the way, and we’re told moving from one to the other in such a short period is unique, and now plays at it’s highest ever level.

In the last 36 months we have also branched out to include a reserve side, an under 23s/academy side linked with Charlton Athletic Commu- nity Trust, as well as a couple of youth teams, with further expansion planned for the future.
