Le Corbusier and Claude Nicolas Ledoux left their fi ngerprints OF OUR all over a region that welcomed them with open arms. A genius work of mankind, the Saline Royale salt works at Arc-et-Senans by Ledoux, has enjoyed UNESCO recognition since 1982. It was one of the largest salt works in Europe in its day, designed in order to take the brine – extracted from the HERITAGE salt works at Salins-les-Bains – and transfer it to Arc-et-Senans along a 21km canal. Its construction began in 1775 and is a modern and utopian extension of the Grande Saline of Salins-les-Bains. Still to this day, Ledoux’s work, « the perfect town », is astonishing in its scale. An engineer who was adept at organising the defences of a city during a siege, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban is a leading fi gure of the Grand Siècle, a precursor of the Age of Enlightenment. On 7th July 2008, twelve of his works, grouped together within a « network of major Vauban sites », were classifi ed as World Heritage by UNESCO, including Besançon, its ramparts and its majestic Citadelle, incontestable proof of the power of his genius.
