This year, heavy people flock together. Clapton and Steve Winwood join up in Blind Faith. Steve Marriott and Pete Frampton meet in Humble Pie. Crosby, Stills and Nash admit a new member, Neil Young. Trouble of one kind or another this year awaits the leading examples of this classic formation. Our cover stars The Rolling Stones this year part company with founder member Brian Jones. The Beatles, too, are changing - how, John Lennon wonders, can the group hope to contain three contributing writers? The Beatles diversification has become problematic.

  • Roots Report: Take Me out of the Ballgame
Roots Report: Take Me Out of the Ballgame Okee dokee folks … I am going to preface my column by stating that much to my father’s disappointment, I do not like baseball at all. Last week I received a mass e-mail that must have been sent to every musician in the state (they didn’t blind cc the e-mail) from the Pawtucket Red Sox. They asked performers to play before each one of their home games. Sounds like a good gig, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not. It pays peanuts. Actually, it doesn’t pay at all. They only offer a hot dog and general admission to the game that you perform for. You provide your own sound system and play for almost two hours. So, in essence, with set-up, you work about four hours for free, err … for a hot dog. In Motif‘s Oct ’14 issue, I wrote a bit about musicians performing for free. I guess the PawSox didn’t see that column. Before I go on, I have to admit that last year I agreed to go play this gig. Why, you may ask? As I mentioned before, my father is a HUGE baseball fan. He actually tried out for the Red Sox after he got out of the Air Force, but was told that he was too old. He ended up playing softball on Sundays for most of his life — until the artificial hip benched him! I wasn’t crazy about doing the gig. It was kind of sketchy, but they agreed to let me sing the National Anthem before the game.

Originally from Australia, he came to the UK in the mid-1960s to work on the traditional folk circuit, and made an obscure and run- of-the-mill traditional folk solo album in 1966, Overlander. From late 1967 to late 1969, the singer-guitarist was in Eclection, a little- known British folk-rock group that made recordings with Elektra. Lucas became romantically involved with Fairport Convention singer Sandy Denny in the late 1960s, and together the pair formed Fotheringay, who made a good folk-rock album in 1970. Despite the group's considerable promise, it folded after that sole LP, when Denny, the biggest talent in the band by far, left for a solo career. Lucas joined Fairport Convention, who at that point had been shorn of all their original members, in mid-1972, with Denny (whom Lucas married in 1973) rejoining the band in early 1974.

I Want to See the Bright Lights Beeswing: Fairport, Folk Rock and Finding My Voice 1967-75, Richard Thompson (£20, hbck,Faber) Richard Thompson has had an exciting life: critical acclaim for many of his solo, band and duo albums, a motorway crash that killed his girlfriend and other members of his band, helping give birth to folk-rock, an early English musician convert to Islam, living out the disintegration of his first marriage on album and stage. But you wouldn’t really know it from this cool, distanced and uninvolved autobiography which focuses on a specific eight years of his career, with some additional reminiscences about growing up. I’m not one for gossip and sordid details of what did or didn’t happen, but this book is so self-restrained it’s hardly there. Thompson’s idea of intimacy or creativity extends only as far as thinking something really affected him is that he dreamt about it, and the ill-advised inclusion of retellings of those dreams in an appendix. Another appendix includes the full lyrics of a few tracks which are touched upon in some detail in the main text. So the bare bones of Thompson’s story are here, his family background, how he met the friends and musicians he would form Fairport Convention with, dry documentary reportage of how and when albums were made, a generalised report of life on the road, and a cool and uninvolved (and uninvolving) account of why Sufi-ism seemed the right path, and his relationship with Linda Peters, who became Linda Thompson, his musical and personal partner.

I ve Always Kept a Unicorn: The Biography of Sandy Denny (Paperback) ~ Doc > DJAAOJMCMC I ve Always Kept a Unicorn: The Biography of Sandy Denny (Paperback) By Mick Houghton FABER FABER, United Kingdom, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Main. Language: English . Brand New Book. I ve Always Kept a Unicorn tells the story of Sandy Denny, one of the greatest British singers of her time and the first female singer-songwriter to produce a substantial and enduring body of original songs. Sandy Denny laid down the marker for folk-rock when she joined Fairport Convention in 1968, but her music went far beyond this during the seventies. After leaving Fairport she formed Fotheringay, whose influential eponymous album was released in 1970, before collaborating on a historic one-off recording with Led Zeppelin - the only other vocalist to record with Zeppelin in their entire career - and releasing four solo albums across the course of the decade. Her tragic and untimely death came in 1978. Sandy emerged from the folk scene of the sixties - a world of larger-than-life characters such as Alex Campbell, Jackson C. Frank, Anne Briggs and Australian singer Trevor Lucas, whom she married in 1973. Their story is at the core of Sandy s later life and work, and is told with the assistance of more than sixty of her friends, fellow musicians and contemporaries, one of whom,... 1 TWO-CD SET MEET ON THE LEDGE BRINGS TOGETHER THE BEST FROM INFLUENTIAL FOLK ROCK BAND FAIRPORT CONVENTION Each year for the past two decades, one of the most popular folk festivals in Europe has been the annual Fairport Convention reunion. Fusing traditional English folk and American folk and rock ‘n’ roll, Fairport Convention became England’s most influential folk rock band of the late ‘60s-early ‘70s. The starting point for master guitarist and songwriter Richard Thompson, and the zenith for Sandy Denny, whose ethereal voice marked her as one of the U.K.’s most compelling female vocalists, Fairport Convention was one of the most acclaimed bands of its time. Today, Fairport Convention is as much a part of the folk rock tradition as the music itself. The two-CD collection Meet On The Ledge: The Classic Years (1967-1975), released July 27, 1999 on A&M/UMG, is a 32-song, two-and-a-half hour anthology featuring material from the classic albums Fairport Convention (1968), What We Did On Our Holiday (1968), Unhalfbricking (1969), Liege And Lief (1969), Full House (1970), Angel Delight (1971), Babbacombe Lee (1971), Nine (1973) and Rising For The Moon (1975). Along with such classic tracks as “Fotheringay,” the lilting “Book Song,” “I’ll Keep It With Mine,” Thompson’s masterpiece “Meet On The Ledge,” Bob Dylan’s “Percy’s Song,” the beautiful “Who Knows Where The Time Goes,” Joni Mitchell’s “Chelsea Morning” and the extended “Sloth,” the collection includes rarities as well as the legendary unreleased recordings of “Bonny Bunch Of Roses” and “Poor Will And The Jolly Hangman.” All of the selections have been digitally remastered from the original tapes.
